Centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian trade layered into Stone Town's coral-stone lanes, red colobus monkeys found nowhere else on Earth, and a coastline built for the deliberate, unstructured close to any safari.
Most visitors see Zanzibar purely as a beach finale — and it is one of the best in the world for that. But the island's spice-trade history, its one national park, and its offshore reefs reward at least a day or two of exploring beyond the resort, guided by people who grew up on this island.
