Two genuinely different primate treks in one Volcanoes National Park trip: a mountain gorilla trek and a golden monkey trek, plus a half-day at the actual gravesite of Dian Fossey, the researcher who put Volcanoes on the world's map. Five days is enough time to do all three properly, without the rushed feel of our shorter 3-Day Gorilla Express.

Enquire About This SafariThis itinerary is built around a genuine contrast: a mountain gorilla trek through dense forest tracking a slow-moving family group, and a golden monkey trek through bamboo forest chasing a troop that moves far faster and never sits still for long. Both happen within Volcanoes National Park, so there's no additional driving between them — just an extra two nights compared to our 3-Day Gorilla Express, used to properly separate the two trekking days and add the Dian Fossey Tomb hike. If you want to add Nyungwe Forest and chimpanzee trekking as well, see our 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates itinerary instead.
Landing at Kigali International Airport, your driver-guide meets you for the scenic roughly 2.5-hour drive north to Musanze, through Rwanda's terraced "thousand hills" countryside. Check-in at your lodge is early afternoon, with the rest of the day free to rest and take in your first views of the Virunga volcanoes before tomorrow's first trek.
An early breakfast precedes your briefing at Kinigi park headquarters, where you're assigned a specific habituated gorilla family. The trek itself runs anywhere from thirty minutes to several hours each way depending on the family's last known location, followed by exactly one hour observing them once found — a rule designed to protect the gorillas. You return to the lodge by early-to-mid afternoon with a personal trekking certificate and the rest of the day at leisure.
A genuinely different experience from yesterday: golden monkeys move through Volcanoes' bamboo forest zone far faster than gorillas, in larger, more energetic troops, making for a livelier, quicker-paced trek that typically takes less time overall but demands sharper attention to keep the group in view. It's a real highlight for travelers who assumed one primate trek would feel much like another.
A half-day hike to the actual gravesite of Dian Fossey at Karisoke, the researcher whose decades of work brought international attention to Volcanoes National Park's mountain gorillas — a genuinely moving stop for anyone who has read her writing or watched documentaries about her research. In the afternoon, a visit to Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village offers a community-run look at traditional Rwandan life, a welcome change of pace after two trekking days.
A relaxed final morning at your Volcanoes lodge before the roughly 2.5-hour transfer back to Kigali International Airport for your onward or international flight.

Low season runs November–May, peak season June–October. The roughly $450 seasonal difference reflects Rwanda's genuinely seasonal gorilla permit pricing, not a change in what's included. A single-supplement adjustment applies for solo travelers.

Not necessarily harder physically, but different: golden monkeys move quickly through bamboo forest and rarely stay still, so the pace of tracking is faster and requires closer attention. Gorilla families, by contrast, tend to move less once located, giving you a calmer hour of observation.
Yes, golden monkey tracking can be booked on its own, without a gorilla permit, at a lower overall cost. Tell your specialist if this is what you want, since this published itinerary assumes both by default.
It's a genuine hike, roughly similar in effort to a moderate gorilla trek, since Karisoke sits at altitude within the park's forest. It's optional and can be swapped for a rest day if preferred.
As early as possible, since this trip requires both a gorilla permit and a golden monkey permit on separate days. We recommend booking 6–9 months ahead, particularly for June–October travel.
Yes — see our 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates itinerary, which adds a Nyungwe Forest extension with chimpanzee trekking onto this same Volcanoes foundation.
