Every real Rwanda safari package we run, compared side by side: real durations, real starting prices, and exactly what's included — from a 3-day gorilla-trekking sprint at Volcanoes National Park to a 7-day complete primates journey covering both Volcanoes and Nyungwe Forest. No placeholder pricing, no "contact us for a quote" walls. Pick a package below, customize it to the day, and a specialist turns it into a real itinerary within 24 hours.

Rwanda is our newest destination, built alongside our established Uganda program rather than in isolation — if you're weighing Rwanda against Uganda specifically, our Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs: Uganda vs. Rwanda guide and Uganda, the Pearl of Africa: A Local Specialist's Complete Guide are the right places to compare the two countries directly. This page is where you come once you're ready to compare real, bookable Rwanda packages and real prices side by side.

OverviewHow Our Rwanda Safari Packages Work

Every package on this page is a real itinerary, built bottom-up from the actual costs behind a Rwanda gorilla safari: government-set park permits, real published lodge rates, and real ground transport — not a hypothetical template invented for this page. Each one shows a genuine starting price, based on double occupancy at our Classic Comfort lodge tier in low season (November–May), and a genuine duration. That figure moves with the season, your chosen lodge tier, and how many travelers are sharing.

Everything else is negotiable, and we encourage exactly that. Want an extra night at Volcanoes before your trek, or to add the Dian Fossey Tomb hike to the 3-Day Gorilla Express? Want to upgrade to one of our Ultra-Luxury lodges, like Bisate Lodge or Singita Kwitonda? All of that is a normal request — our specialists rebuild the day-by-day plan and the price around it, then send a real, itemized quote.

Every package name below links to its own dedicated itinerary page, with a full day-by-day breakdown, the exact lodges used, and what's included night by night.

How prices on this page work Every "from" price is per person, sharing a room, at our Classic Comfort lodge tier, in low season (November–May), excluding international flights unless the itinerary page states otherwise. Gorilla, golden monkey and chimpanzee permit fees ARE already included in every price shown — see Chapter 05 for exactly how. Your specialist confirms the exact, itemized figure for your dates before you book anything.

Chapter 01Every Rwanda Safari Package, Compared

Here is the complete, honest comparison: every Rwanda-only package we run, plus our combined Uganda & Rwanda route. Click any package name to see its full day-by-day itinerary.

PackageDurationFrom (pp, low season)Best For
3-Day Gorilla Express3 days / 2 nights$2,478Gorillas only, minimum time, Volcanoes NP
5-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey5 days / 4 nights$3,778Both Volcanoes primate treks, plus Dian Fossey's grave
7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates7 days / 6 nights$4,692Every Rwanda primate trek: gorillas, golden monkeys and chimpanzees

Prices shown are real starting points at the time of writing, per person sharing, Classic Comfort tier, low season (November–May), excluding international flights. Peak season (June–October) adds roughly $450pp for the higher gorilla permit rate. See each itinerary page for its full day-by-day plan and current pricing.

Chapter 02Rwanda Safari Packages by Duration

How many days you have is usually the single biggest factor in which package makes sense. A useful rule of thumb: a single gorilla trek justifies a minimum of 2 full days once travel to and from Volcanoes National Park is counted, so a genuinely rushed 1-2 day Rwanda trip rarely works — which is why our shortest package runs 3 days, not fewer.

3 Days: The Tightest Possible Gorilla Trek

The 3-Day Gorilla Express (from $2,478pp) is exactly what it sounds like: arrive, trek, depart, with a single overnight either side of your gorilla trekking day. It suits travelers who specifically want the gorilla-trekking experience and have limited days — a genuine option Uganda's shortest package (6 days) can't match, since Volcanoes National Park sits roughly 2.5 hours from Kigali versus Bwindi's much longer transfer from Entebbe.

5 Days: Two Primate Treks

The 5-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey (from $3,778pp) adds golden monkey tracking — a genuinely different, higher-energy trek through bamboo forest, chasing a troop that moves far faster than a gorilla family — plus a half-day at the Dian Fossey Tomb, the actual gravesite of the researcher who put Volcanoes National Park's gorillas on the world's radar.

7 Days: The Complete Rwanda Primates Story

The 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates (from $4,692pp) is the only package on this page that leaves Volcanoes National Park at all, adding a scenic 4-5 hour transfer south to Nyungwe Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walkway and colobus monkey tracking. It's the most complete single-country Rwanda primate trip we run.

7+ Days: A Second Country

Once you want gorillas in two countries rather than one park in Rwanda, the Uganda & Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari (from $7,047pp) crosses the Cyanika border to combine a Bwindi trek with a Volcanoes trek in a single 7-day trip. We cover this and a shorter alternative route in Chapter 06 below.

Why Rwanda trips run shorter than equivalent Uganda trips Rwanda's gorilla and golden monkey trekking is concentrated in one park (Volcanoes), a short 2.5-hour drive from Kigali International Airport. Uganda's primate trekking is spread across Bwindi, Kibale and Mgahinga, each a longer drive from Entebbe. This is a real, structural difference — not a sign that a Rwanda trip sees less, per day, than a Uganda one.

Chapter 03Rwanda Safari Packages by Budget & Style

Every package above is priced at our Classic Comfort tier as a starting point, but each can be built at three different lodge tiers, using the real Rwanda lodges we work with. The itinerary and route stay the same — what changes is where you sleep.

Classic Comfort Package

Well-run properties near Volcanoes and Nyungwe's main trailheads, such as Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel and Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel. Where every "from" price on this page starts.

  • The prices shown throughout this page
  • Shared or small-group vehicles
  • Solid, comfortable properties in good locations
Ultra-Luxury Package

Rwanda's most exclusive lodges — Bisate Lodge, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, Singita Kwitonda, Wilderness Sabyinyo Silverback and Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort — typically more than double the Classic Comfort price.

  • Flagship architect-designed properties
  • Private guide and vehicle as standard
  • Exceptional design and service throughout

One thing that doesn't change between tiers: gorilla, golden monkey and chimpanzee permit fees are fixed by the Rwanda Development Board regardless of which lodge tier you book, so the gap between a Classic Comfort and Ultra-Luxury version of the same package is entirely about accommodation and vehicle privacy, not the trekking experience itself. See Chapter 05 below for exactly how permits factor into these prices.

What Actually Moves Your Final Price

  • Season. Rwanda's gorilla permit itself moves with the season: $1,050 per person November–May versus $1,500 June–October, a roughly $450 swing that affects every package containing a gorilla trek.
  • Lodge tier. As above, moving from Classic Comfort to Premium to Ultra-Luxury is usually the single biggest lever on total price — more so in Rwanda than in most destinations, since our Ultra-Luxury Rwanda lodges run genuinely higher than most other countries' top tier.
  • How many treks and parks. A package with a gorilla trek plus a golden monkey trek, or one that adds Nyungwe's chimpanzee trekking, costs meaningfully more than a single-trek trip — this is a real, itemized permit cost, not a markup.
  • Group size and room sharing. Most rates are quoted per person sharing; a solo traveler typically faces a disclosed single-supplement adjustment.
  • Which lodges you choose. Within a single tier, Rwanda's real lodge rates vary meaningfully — Virunga Lodge and Amakoro Songa Lodge, both Premium tier, aren't identically priced. Your specialist confirms the exact lodge and rate before you book.

Tell us your budget and travel style — we'll tell you which package tier fits.

Match My Budget to a Package

Chapter 04Rwanda Safari Packages by Traveler Type

Family Packages

Rwanda's minimum age for gorilla trekking permits is 15, the same rule as Uganda's, so families with younger children typically build a Rwanda trip around the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village visit and Volcanoes National Park's scenery rather than the gorilla trek itself, or wait until children reach trekking age. See Multigenerational Safaris and Best Age for a Family Safari for the full picture, and Family Safari Camps With Real Kids' Programs for lodge specifics.

Honeymoon & Milestone Packages

The 5-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey package pairs well with a honeymoon: two genuinely different treks, real time at an intimate lodge, and no long internal transfers to eat into your days together. See Honeymoon Safari + Zanzibar Beach and Milestone Safaris: Proposals, Anniversaries and Big-Birthday Trips for how to extend a Rwanda trip with a beach finale.

Wildlife Photography & Enthusiast Packages

The 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates package is our strongest option for anyone who wants real variety in front of a lens: gorillas and golden monkeys in Volcanoes' volcanic highland forest, then chimpanzees, a canopy walkway and colobus monkeys in Nyungwe's genuinely different lowland rainforest, all in one trip.

Solo Traveler Packages

Every package on this page can be booked solo. Most are priced per person sharing a room, so traveling alone typically means a disclosed single-supplement adjustment. See Solo Travel on Safari: Cost, Safety and the Single Supplement Explained for the full picture.

Group Packages

Traveling as a group generally brings the effective per-person cost down on shared vehicle costs. Any package above can be rebuilt around a larger group — tell us your group size and we handle splitting vehicles, rooms and permits (remember, a single gorilla trek is capped at 8 visitors per habituated group, so larger groups sometimes need to split across two treks or two days).

Traveling as a family, a couple, solo, or a group? Tell us and we'll point you to the right starting package.

Chapter 05Rwanda Permits Within These Prices

Permits are the single biggest and most season-sensitive cost in a Rwanda safari, so it's worth explaining clearly rather than burying it in fine print. Every "from" price on this page already has the correct number and type of permits built in — you are not quoted a package price and then separately blindsided by a permit fee.

Permit / ActivityParkPrice (per person)
Gorilla Trekking PermitVolcanoes NP$1,500 peak (Jun–Oct) / $1,050 low season (Nov–May)
Golden Monkey TrackingVolcanoes NP$100
Dian Fossey Tomb HikeVolcanoes NP$75
Iby'Iwacu Cultural VillageNear Volcanoes NP$35 (day visit)
Chimpanzee TrekkingNyungwe Forest NP$250
Canopy WalkwayNyungwe Forest NP$40
Colobus Monkey TrackingNyungwe Forest NP$40

Rates current as of 2026, cross-checked against the Rwanda Development Board and multiple specialist operators. Gorilla permit pricing is genuinely seasonal in Rwanda, unlike Uganda's flat rate — see our Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs: Uganda vs. Rwanda guide for the direct comparison. Rwanda residents and East African citizens qualify for substantially lower gorilla permit rates ($500 and $200 respectively) — ask your specialist if this applies to you.

These are fixed government and park-authority fees, identical whether you book Classic Comfort or Ultra-Luxury — they are the single biggest reason a package with two or three primate treks costs meaningfully more than an otherwise similar package with one.

Why permit availability drives your dates, not just your price Only 8 permits are issued per habituated gorilla group per day, across a limited number of groups at Volcanoes National Park. High-season dates (June–October) can sell out months ahead, and the November–May low-season promotional rate is a genuine reason to consider traveling outside peak months, not just a booking-availability question. If your dates are fixed, tell us early — permit availability, not lodge availability, is usually the real constraint on when a Rwanda trip can happen.

Chapter 06Multi-Country Packages Including Rwanda

For travelers who want two countries' worth of gorilla trekking in one trip, we run a real, costed route combining Rwanda with Uganda. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park sits just across the Cyanika border from Uganda's gorilla-trekking parks, which makes a genuine two-country primate trip logistically realistic in a way few other cross-border combinations are.

This is a real, bottom-up costed itinerary, built the same way as our Uganda-only and Rwanda-only packages — see its full day-by-day page for exactly which lodges, border crossing and treks are included at each tier.

A shorter alternative we can also build: the Twin Parks route Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park sits roughly an hour from Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park via the same Cyanika border crossing — a much shorter hop than the Bwindi route above, since Mgahinga borders Rwanda directly. We can build a leaner 5-day version of a two-country gorilla trip around this pairing. One honest caveat, the same one we disclose on our Mgahinga park guide: Mgahinga has only one habituated gorilla group, and it has a genuine history of wandering across the Uganda/Rwanda/DRC borders, which can occasionally make a Mgahinga trek unavailable on a given day. We haven't published this as a fixed-price package for exactly that reason — ask your specialist for current availability and a real quote if this shorter route interests you.

If you're weighing whether a two-country trip is realistic on your timeline, see Three Countries, One Trip: Is Uganda + Kenya + Tanzania Realistic? (the same border-logistics thinking applies to a two-country Uganda-Rwanda trip) and Flight Logistics Between Safari Countries. Our Uganda and Kenya Together guide is also a useful read on how we think about combining countries generally, even though it covers a different pairing.

Chapter 07What's Included in Every Package (and What's Not)

Included in every package

  • All accommodation at the stated lodge tier
  • All meals at lodges
  • Treks and activities as named in the itinerary
  • Park entry fees and the correct number of permits
  • Ground transfers named in the itinerary
  • An English-speaking professional guide throughout
  • A detailed, itemized quotation before you pay anything

Not included (quoted separately)

  • International flights to and from East Africa
  • Visa fees
  • Travel insurance
  • Optional activities not named in the itinerary
  • Gratuities for guides, trackers and lodge staff
  • Any nights or activities beyond the stated itinerary

We're upfront about the two things that most commonly surprise first-time bookers. First, most lodges price rooms per person sharing, not per room — a solo traveler should expect a disclosed single-supplement adjustment. Second, permit fees are set by the Rwanda Development Board and genuinely vary by season (see Chapter 05); our quotes always reflect the current rate for your actual travel dates.

Chapter 08Custom & Tailor-Made Packages

Every package on this page is a real starting point, not a locked-in product. If none match exactly what you want — a different lodge, an extra night, a specific combination of Volcanoes and Nyungwe activities — tell us and we build your package from scratch, at no extra planning cost.

Don't see your exact trip above?

Chapter 09Add-Ons for Any Package

These can be added to any package above, regardless of which one you choose:

✓Golden monkey tracking at Volcanoes NP ✓Dian Fossey Tomb / Karisoke hike ✓Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village visit ✓Nyungwe canopy walkway ✓Colobus monkey tracking ✓Extra nights at any lodge tier ✓Lodge tier upgrade on any or all nights ✓An additional country, including Uganda

Packages That Don't Include a Gorilla Trek

Not every traveler wants, or can afford, a gorilla trek — the $1,050–$1,500 permit cost is a genuine consideration for many. A Rwanda trip can be built around Nyungwe's chimpanzee trekking and canopy walkway alone, dropping the gorilla permit entirely and lowering the price accordingly. Tell your specialist up front if this is what you want, since all four of our published packages assume a gorilla trek by default.

Chapter 10Why Book Your Rwanda Package With Us

Two things genuinely differentiate how we run our Rwanda packages. First, every price on this page is real and current, built bottom-up from actual permit fees and actual lodge rates — not a placeholder designed purely to get you to call. Second, every package is a starting point, not a fixed product: our specialists rebuild the day-by-day plan around your actual preferences as a matter of routine.

We also don't disappear once you've paid. Every confirmed package comes with real, downloadable documents — a detailed itinerary, an invoice, and any vouchers your lodges require — and a specialist who stays reachable for the entire trip. If your gorilla permit date needs to shift or you simply want to add an extra night once you're excited about the trip, that's a conversation with a real person who already knows your itinerary.

Chapter 11Common Mistakes When Comparing Rwanda Safari Packages

  • Not checking which season a quoted price assumes. Rwanda's gorilla permit alone swings by $450 per person between low and peak season — a low-season quote and a peak-season quote for the same itinerary will never match, and that's not inconsistent pricing.
  • Assuming Rwanda's lodges are priced like other destinations. Rwanda's Ultra-Luxury tier runs genuinely higher than most countries' equivalent tier — several of our own Ultra-Luxury Rwanda lodges exceed $2,500 per person per night. Comparing a Rwanda Ultra-Luxury quote to an equivalent-sounding tier elsewhere can be misleading.
  • Not confirming whether permits are already included. Some operators quote a headline price that excludes the gorilla permit, which can add $1,050–$1,500 per person once disclosed. Every price on this page already includes the correct number of permits.
  • Booking gorilla permits at the last minute. At 8 permits per group per day, high-season dates sell out months ahead — this affects your package choice more than almost anything else.
  • Treating a published package as fixed when it's actually a starting template. Most of what can be customized only becomes clear once you actually ask.
  • Overlooking the low-season promotional rate. Traveling November–May rather than June–October can meaningfully lower your total cost without changing what you actually see or do.

A Closer LookWhat a Typical Package Day Looks Like

To make these packages less abstract, here's a real shape of a trekking day from our 7-day Complete Rwanda Primates package's Volcanoes leg: an early breakfast before a briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi, where you're assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family based on fitness level and group size, then a trek that can run anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours each way depending on where the family was last located the previous evening, one hour with the gorillas once found, and a return to the lodge by early-to-mid afternoon with the rest of the day free. Nyungwe days, by contrast, run on a different rhythm entirely: chimpanzee trekking starts even earlier (chimps move on from their overnight nesting site at first light), followed by a more relaxed afternoon on the canopy walkway or colobus trail. Knowing this mix of pacing in advance is part of why we build in the specific park order we do on each package above, rather than treating every day as interchangeable.

Chapter 13Before You Book: The Essentials

A few practical things are worth confirming first. Visa requirements are covered in Visa Requirements for Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Seychelles — note that Rwanda has its own separate visa policy not covered in that guide, so confirm current Rwandan entry requirements directly with Rwanda's immigration authority or your specialist before booking. Health preparation is in Malaria, Yellow Fever and Vaccinations, and we strongly recommend travel insurance with medical evacuation cover — see Travel Insurance and Medical Evacuation Cover. For packing, see The Complete East Africa Safari Packing List, and for tipping norms, Tipping on Safari: A Country-by-Country Guide.

If you're still deciding whether Rwanda or Uganda is the right choice for you, our Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs: Uganda vs. Rwanda guide is the most direct comparison we publish, and Which of the Five Destinations Should You Visit First? covers the broader question across all our destinations. Timing questions worth resolving before you commit: how far ahead to book, and whether the low-season promotional permit rate changes your ideal travel dates. Frequently asked questions

How much does a Rwanda safari package actually cost?
Real Rwanda safari packages on this page start from $2,478pp for our shortest trip, the 3-Day Gorilla Express, and run up to $4,692pp for our most complete single-country option, the 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates. A combined Uganda & Rwanda trip with two gorilla treks starts from $7,047pp over 7 days. Every figure is per person sharing, at our Classic Comfort lodge tier, in low season (November–May), with permits already included — not a marketing placeholder.
Are gorilla, golden monkey and chimpanzee permits included in the package price?
Yes. Every "from" price on this page already has the correct number and type of permits built in at current Rwanda Development Board rates: the seasonal gorilla permit ($1,050 low season / $1,500 peak), golden monkey tracking ($100), and chimpanzee trekking at Nyungwe ($250) where those activities appear in the itinerary. You are never quoted a headline price and then separately surprised by a permit fee once you ask for a real quote.
What is the cheapest Rwanda safari package?
The 3-Day Gorilla Express, from $2,478 per person, is our least expensive Rwanda package. It's a single Volcanoes National Park gorilla trek with one overnight either side, at our Classic Comfort lodge tier in low season. It's designed for travelers who want the gorilla-trekking experience specifically and have limited days, rather than a full multi-park Rwanda itinerary.
What is the most complete Rwanda safari package?
The 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates package, from $4,692 per person, is our most thorough single-country option. It covers Volcanoes National Park (gorilla trekking, and optionally golden monkeys and the Dian Fossey Tomb) and then a scenic transfer south to Nyungwe Forest National Park for chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walkway and colobus monkey tracking — every primate experience Rwanda offers, in one trip.
What's the difference between the 3-day, 5-day and 7-day Rwanda packages?
The 3-Day Gorilla Express is a single gorilla trek and nothing else. The 5-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey adds a second, genuinely different primate trek (golden monkeys, tracked through bamboo forest) plus the Dian Fossey Tomb hike, all still within Volcanoes National Park. The 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates is the only one that leaves Volcanoes entirely, adding Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walkway and colobus monkeys.
Can I combine Rwanda and Uganda in one safari package?
Yes. Our Uganda & Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari (7 days from $7,047pp) treks gorillas at Volcanoes National Park, then crosses the Cyanika border to trek a second, different gorilla family at Bwindi's Rushaga sector, before returning to Kigali. It's a real, bottom-up costed itinerary built the same way as our single-country packages, not a hypothetical add-on.
Is there a shorter way to combine Rwanda and Uganda gorilla trekking?
We can build a leaner 5-day route pairing Volcanoes National Park with Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, roughly an hour away via the same Cyanika border crossing. We haven't published this as a fixed-price package because Mgahinga has only one habituated gorilla group with a genuine history of wandering across the Uganda/Rwanda/DRC borders, which can occasionally make a Mgahinga trek unavailable on a given day. Ask your specialist for current availability and a real quote.
Why are Rwanda safari packages shorter than equivalent Uganda packages?
Rwanda's gorilla and golden monkey trekking is concentrated in a single park, Volcanoes National Park, roughly 2.5 hours from Kigali International Airport. Uganda's primate trekking is spread across Bwindi, Kibale and Mgahinga, each a longer drive from Entebbe. That's a real, structural difference in geography — it doesn't mean a Rwanda trip sees less per day than a Uganda one.
What is the minimum number of days needed for a Rwanda gorilla safari?
We don't run trips shorter than 3 days. A single gorilla trek realistically needs a minimum of 2 full days once travel to and from Volcanoes National Park is counted — one night to arrive and rest before the trek, one night after. Our shortest published package, the 3-Day Gorilla Express, reflects that practical minimum rather than an arbitrary cutoff.
Why is the Rwanda gorilla permit price different in different seasons?
Rwanda's gorilla trekking permit is genuinely seasonal, unlike Uganda's flat rate: $1,050 per person November–May as a published low-season promotional rate, rising to $1,500 per person June–October in peak season. This roughly $450 swing affects every package on this page that includes a gorilla trek, which is why we quote our starting prices at the low-season rate and flag the peak-season difference clearly.
How much does golden monkey tracking cost in Rwanda?
Golden monkey tracking at Volcanoes National Park costs $100 per person, a fixed Rwanda Development Board fee that doesn't vary by season the way the gorilla permit does. It's included in our 5-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey and 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates packages, and can be added to any other package as an add-on.
How much does chimpanzee trekking cost in Nyungwe Forest?
Chimpanzee trekking at Nyungwe Forest National Park costs $250 per person. It's included in our 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates package, which is currently the only published package that reaches Nyungwe, though it can be arranged as part of a custom itinerary if you want Nyungwe without a Volcanoes leg.
What is the Dian Fossey Tomb hike and how much does it cost?
The Dian Fossey Tomb hike is a half-day trek to the actual gravesite of the researcher whose work brought international attention to Volcanoes National Park's mountain gorillas, at Karisoke. It costs $75 per person and is included in our 5-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey package; it can be added to any other Rwanda package.
What is the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village and is it included?
Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, near Volcanoes National Park, is a community-run cultural visit costing $35 per person as a day visit. It's not automatically included in every package but can be added to any of them, and is a genuine option for travelers who want a non-trekking activity, including families whose children are below the gorilla-trekking age of 15.
What does the Nyungwe canopy walkway cost?
Nyungwe Forest National Park's canopy walkway costs $40 per person and is included in our 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates package. It's a genuinely different experience from primate trekking — a suspended walkway through the rainforest canopy — and pairs naturally with a chimpanzee trekking morning on the same day.
What does colobus monkey tracking at Nyungwe cost?
Colobus monkey tracking at Nyungwe Forest National Park costs $40 per person, tracking one of Africa's largest troops of Angola colobus monkeys through the forest. It's included in our 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates package and can be added to a custom Nyungwe-focused itinerary.
Why do permits make up such a large share of the package price?
Permits are the single biggest, most season-sensitive cost in a Rwanda safari. A gorilla permit alone is $1,050–$1,500 per person, fixed by the Rwanda Development Board regardless of which lodge tier you book. That's why a package with two or three primate treks costs meaningfully more than an otherwise similar one-trek package — it's a real, itemized government fee, not a markup we add.
How far in advance should I book gorilla permits in Rwanda?
As early as possible, especially for June–October travel. Only 8 permits are issued per habituated gorilla group per day, across a limited number of groups at Volcanoes National Park, and high-season dates can sell out months ahead. If your dates are fixed, tell us early — permit availability, not lodge availability, is usually the real constraint on when a Rwanda trip can happen.
Should I travel in low season or peak season for a Rwanda safari?
Low season (November–May) carries a real, published cost advantage: the $1,050 gorilla permit rate versus $1,500 in peak season, a roughly $450 per person saving that doesn't require any compromise on what you actually see or do. Peak season (June–October) is drier and popular for that reason, but the low-season promotional rate is a genuine option worth considering, not just a booking-availability question.
What are the three lodge tiers for Rwanda packages?
Classic Comfort, where every "from" price on this page starts, uses well-run properties near the main trailheads such as Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel and Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel. Premium uses distinctive lodges like Virunga Lodge and Amakoro Songa Lodge, typically 55–70% above the Classic Comfort price. Ultra-Luxury uses Rwanda's most exclusive properties — Bisate Lodge, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, Singita Kwitonda, Wilderness Sabyinyo Silverback and Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort — typically more than double the Classic Comfort price.
Which lodges are used at the Ultra-Luxury tier in Rwanda?
Our Ultra-Luxury Rwanda tier uses Bisate Lodge, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Wilderness Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (all near Volcanoes National Park) and Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort (near Nyungwe Forest). These are architect-designed flagship properties with private guide and vehicle as standard, and they run genuinely higher than most other destinations' top tier — several exceed $2,500 per person per night.
Which lodges are used at the Premium tier in Rwanda?
Our Premium Rwanda tier uses Virunga Lodge and Amakoro Songa Lodge, both distinctive properties with real character and setting, in prime locations closer to the trailheads than our Classic Comfort options, with private or small-group vehicles. Premium typically runs 55–70% above the Classic Comfort price shown for the same package.
Which lodges are used at the Classic Comfort tier in Rwanda?
Our Classic Comfort Rwanda tier uses Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel near Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel near Nyungwe Forest — solid, comfortable properties in good locations, with shared or small-group vehicles. Every "from" price throughout this page is based on this tier.
How much more does the Ultra-Luxury tier cost compared to Classic Comfort?
Ultra-Luxury typically runs more than double the Classic Comfort price for the same package and itinerary. Permit fees stay identical across every tier since they're fixed by the Rwanda Development Board regardless of accommodation — the price gap between tiers is entirely about lodges, privacy and vehicle exclusivity, not the trekking experience itself.
Do I have to book the Ultra-Luxury tier to have a good Rwanda safari?
No. Our Classic Comfort tier uses solid, well-located properties and includes the identical treks, permits and guiding as every other tier — the gorilla trekking experience itself doesn't change based on which lodge tier you book. Ultra-Luxury and Premium add architecture, privacy and service, not a different or better version of the trek.
Is the price per person or per room?
Every "from" price on this page is per person, based on two people sharing a room (double occupancy). Most lodges price this way rather than per room. A solo traveler should expect a disclosed single-supplement adjustment, which your specialist confirms as part of your itemized quote.
What is the single supplement for solo travelers in Rwanda?
Since most Rwanda lodge rates are quoted per person sharing a room, a solo traveler typically faces a disclosed single-supplement adjustment to cover the cost of a room otherwise meant for two. Every package on this page can be booked solo — the supplement is itemized clearly in your quote, never hidden.
Can families with young children do a Rwanda gorilla safari?
Rwanda's minimum age for gorilla trekking permits is 15, the same rule as Uganda's. Families with younger children typically build a Rwanda trip around the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village visit and Volcanoes National Park's scenery instead, or wait until children reach trekking age. See our Multigenerational Safaris and Best Age for a Family Safari guides for the full picture.
What's the best Rwanda package for a honeymoon?
The 5-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey package pairs well with a honeymoon: two genuinely different treks, real time at an intimate lodge, and no long internal transfers eating into your days together. It also extends naturally into a beach finale — see our Honeymoon Safari + Zanzibar Beach guide for how we build that combination.
What's the best Rwanda package for wildlife photography?
The 7-Day Complete Rwanda Primates package is our strongest option for photographers, offering real variety: gorillas and golden monkeys in Volcanoes' volcanic highland forest, then chimpanzees, a canopy walkway and colobus monkeys in Nyungwe's genuinely different lowland rainforest, all within one trip.
Can I book a Rwanda safari package as a solo traveler?
Yes, every package on this page can be booked solo. Since most rates are quoted per person sharing, traveling alone typically means a disclosed single-supplement adjustment. See our Solo Travel on Safari guide for the full picture on cost and safety considerations.
Does traveling as a group lower the per-person price?
Generally yes, since shared vehicle costs are split across more people, which brings the effective per-person cost down. Any package on this page can be rebuilt around a larger group — tell us your group size and we handle splitting vehicles, rooms and permits, remembering that a single gorilla trek is capped at 8 visitors per habituated group.
What happens if my group is larger than 8 people for gorilla trekking?
Since a single habituated gorilla group can only host 8 trekking permits per day, larger groups sometimes need to split across two gorilla groups or two separate trekking days. We handle this as part of building your itemized quote, so it's planned for upfront rather than discovered at check-in.
Can I customize one of the published Rwanda packages?
Yes, every package on this page is a real starting point, not a locked-in product. Want an extra night at Volcanoes, an upgraded lodge tier, or an added activity like the Dian Fossey Tomb hike? All of that is a normal request — our specialists rebuild the day-by-day plan and price around it, then send a real, itemized quote.
What if none of the published packages match what I want?
Tell us your dates, must-do activities, budget and who's traveling, and we build a package from scratch at no extra planning cost. Every one of our published packages started this same way — as a real, bottom-up itinerary built from actual permit and lodge costs, not a generic template.
What's included in every Rwanda safari package?
All accommodation at the stated lodge tier, all meals at lodges, the treks and activities named in the itinerary, park entry fees and the correct number of permits, ground transfers named in the itinerary, an English-speaking professional guide throughout, and a detailed, itemized quotation before you pay anything.
What's not included in a Rwanda safari package price?
International flights to and from East Africa, visa fees, travel insurance, optional activities not named in the itinerary, gratuities for guides, trackers and lodge staff, and any nights or activities beyond the stated itinerary. These are quoted separately so the package price stays honest and itemized.
Can I add extra nights or activities to a package after booking?
Yes. Extra nights at any lodge tier, a lodge tier upgrade on some or all nights, golden monkey tracking, the Dian Fossey Tomb hike, the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, the Nyungwe canopy walkway, colobus monkey tracking, or an additional country such as Uganda can all be added to any package — before or, where permit and lodge availability allow, after your initial booking.
Can I do a Rwanda safari without a gorilla trek?
Yes. A Rwanda trip can be built around Nyungwe Forest's chimpanzee trekking and canopy walkway alone, dropping the gorilla permit entirely and lowering the price accordingly — a genuine option given the $1,050–$1,500 gorilla permit cost. All four of our published packages assume a gorilla trek by default, so tell your specialist up front if you want to skip it.
How do I pay for a Rwanda safari package?
We never ask for or store your full card number, CVV, or expiration date. Card and mobile money payments are handled entirely through our payment provider Pesapal's own secure checkout, and bank transfer is also available. See our Make a Payment page for current ways to pay once you're ready to confirm a booking.
How does booking a Rwanda safari package actually work?
You enquire through the trip builder with no obligation, a specialist replies within 24 hours with a real, itemized quote, you refine it together as many times as needed, then confirm and pay to secure your gorilla permits. Your confirmed itinerary, invoice and permit confirmation are issued well before you travel, and your specialist stays reachable throughout the trip.
How long does it take to get a quote for a Rwanda package?
Typically within 24 hours of enquiring through the trip builder. Your specialist sends a real, itemized quotation built around your actual dates, party size and permit needs — not a generic price range.
What visa do I need for Rwanda?
Rwanda has its own separate visa policy, distinct from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and the Seychelles covered in our general visa guide. Confirm current Rwandan entry requirements directly with Rwanda's immigration authority or with your specialist before booking, since visa rules can change.
Do I need vaccinations for a Rwanda safari?
Health preparation for Rwanda follows similar general guidance to our other East African destinations — see our Malaria, Yellow Fever and Vaccinations guide for the full picture, and confirm current requirements with a travel health provider before you go, since recommendations can change.
Do I need travel insurance for a Rwanda gorilla trek?
We strongly recommend travel insurance with medical evacuation cover for any Rwanda safari, particularly one involving gorilla or chimpanzee trekking in remote forest terrain. See our Travel Insurance and Medical Evacuation Cover guide for what to look for in a policy.
What should I pack for a Rwanda gorilla trekking safari?
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, gardening-style gloves for pushing through vegetation, long trousers and sleeves regardless of temperature, and rain gear are gorilla-trekking essentials given Volcanoes National Park's forested, often muddy terrain. See our Complete East Africa Safari Packing List for the full country-by-country breakdown.
How much should I tip guides and trackers in Rwanda?
Tipping norms for Rwanda broadly follow East African safari conventions, with guides, trackers and lodge staff each tipped separately and gratuities not included in the package price. See our Tipping on Safari guide for specific, current guidance by role and country.
How does Rwanda's gorilla permit price compare to Uganda's?
Rwanda's gorilla permit is genuinely seasonal: $1,050 low season (November–May) versus $1,500 peak season (June–October), a roughly $450 swing. Uganda's permit is a flat rate year-round. See our Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs: Uganda vs. Rwanda guide for the full direct comparison, including how it affects total package pricing in each country.
Should I visit Rwanda or Uganda first?
It depends on your priorities — trip length, budget, and whether you want gorillas alongside other wildlife like tree-climbing lions or chimpanzees in a bigger, more varied country (Uganda), or the tightest, most efficient single-park gorilla experience (Rwanda). See our Which of the Five Destinations Should You Visit First? guide for how we think through this question generally.
What questions should I ask before booking a Rwanda safari operator?
Whether permits are already included in the quoted price, which specific lodges are used at each tier, what happens if a gorilla trek needs to be rescheduled, and how payments are secured are all worth confirming upfront. See our 10 Questions to Ask a Safari Operator Before Booking guide for the complete list.
Is Rwanda safe to visit for a gorilla safari?
See our Is East Africa Safe for Travelers? guide for a broad, honest overview of safety considerations across our destinations, including Rwanda. We recommend combining that general guidance with your own government's current travel advisories before booking.
What are the most common mistakes people make comparing Rwanda safari packages?
Not checking which season a quoted price assumes (the $450 gorilla permit swing), assuming Rwanda's lodges are priced like other destinations (our Ultra-Luxury tier runs genuinely higher), not confirming whether permits are already included, booking gorilla permits at the last minute, treating a published package as fixed rather than a customizable starting template, and overlooking the low-season promotional rate.
What's the difference between a Volcanoes day and a Nyungwe day on a Rwanda safari?
A Volcanoes gorilla-trekking day starts with an early breakfast and a briefing at Kinigi park headquarters, followed by a trek that can run 30 minutes to several hours depending on where the gorilla family was last located, then one hour with the gorillas and a return to the lodge by early-to-mid afternoon. Nyungwe days run on a different rhythm: chimpanzee trekking starts even earlier since chimps move on from their nesting site at first light, followed by a more relaxed afternoon on the canopy walkway or colobus trail.
Why does crossing into Uganda from Rwanda for gorilla trekking make sense logistically?
Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park sits just across the Cyanika border from Uganda's gorilla-trekking parks, making a genuine two-country primate trip realistic in a way few other cross-border combinations are. Our Uganda & Rwanda Double Gorilla Safari uses exactly this crossing to combine a Volcanoes trek with a Bwindi trek in one 7-day trip.
Are the prices on this page real, or starting estimates for marketing?
Real. Every package is built bottom-up from actual government-set park permits, real published lodge rates, and real ground transport costs — not a hypothetical template. The figure shown is a genuine starting price at double occupancy, Classic Comfort tier, low season; it moves with season, lodge tier and group size, and your specialist confirms the exact, itemized number before you book anything.
What happens after I confirm and pay for a Rwanda safari package?
You receive real, downloadable documents — a detailed itinerary, an invoice, and any vouchers your lodges require — well before you travel, along with permit confirmation. A specialist who already knows your itinerary stays reachable for the entire trip, including if your gorilla permit date needs to shift or you want to add a night once you're excited about the trip.
How do I start planning a Rwanda safari package?
Tell us which package caught your eye, or describe what you're picturing — dates, must-do activities, budget, who's traveling — through our trip builder. A destination specialist replies within 24 hours with a real, tailored quote, and there's no obligation or payment required just to ask.
