This classic gorilla trekking safari is six days built around one unforgettable hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. There are no flights stacked on top of each other and no park-hopping. You spend one night near Lake Mburo, then four unhurried nights in Buhoma, with the gorilla trek in the middle of the trip, so you arrive rested and have time to let it settle in before you fly home.

We recommend this trip most often to first-time safari travellers and to anyone with a short window who still wants the best wildlife encounter in Africa. Bwindi is an ancient, tangled forest of about 321 square kilometres, and it is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Four nights in Buhoma also give your guide room to move the trek if the weather changes, without upsetting the rest of the trip.

On day one, we meet you at Entebbe airport and drive south-west through Masaka and Ankole cattle country, where long-horned cattle graze beside the road. You reach Lake Mburo National Park in the afternoon, and you can add a short Lake Mburo game drive if you have the energy.
Day two is a full travel day, and it is also a beautiful one. The road climbs along the Kichwamba escarpment, with views over the Rift Valley floor and its crater lakes. You then pass tea and banana terraces before the dark edge of the forest appears. You arrive at your Buhoma lodge in the late afternoon, and your guide briefs you for the trek.
Day three is the reason for this classic gorilla trekking safari. Buhoma gorilla trekking starts early. After breakfast, you join a group of no more than eight guests at Buhoma park headquarters for a safety briefing. You then walk with rangers and trackers through dense, often steep forest. The trek can take from 45 minutes to several hours, depending on where the family spent the night. When you find the gorillas, you spend one hour with them, keeping a minimum distance of seven metres and using no flash. You receive a trekking certificate afterwards. One gorilla trekking permit per person is included in this classic gorilla trekking safari, and we arrange and pay for it in advance. Uganda issues a limited number of permits each day, and they sell out in busy periods, so we suggest booking as early as you can. On day four, you take a Batwa forest walk with Batwa elders, who lived in Bwindi before it became a national park. They explain the medicinal plants, hunting methods and hut-building of forest life. In the afternoon, you take a community walk along the Buhoma trail, past craft cooperatives selling basketry and woodcarvings, and you can add an optional school visit.
Day five is slower. You take a guided walk on the Munyanga waterfall trail, a shaded path along a river where black-and-white colobus monkeys and many forest birds live. You return to your lodge for lunch, and the afternoon is free for a swim, a browse in Buhoma's craft stalls or time on your veranda. On day six, you have a relaxed breakfast and transfer to the airstrip, or you drive back to Entebbe, depending on your flight.

Your classic gorilla trekking safari includes five nights of accommodation, one gorilla permit per person, park entry fees and conservation levies, and a private 4x4 with a driver-guide. All road transfers between Entebbe, Lake Mburo and Bwindi are included, along with full board at both lodges, bottled water on transfers and on the trekking day, the Batwa walk, the community walk, the waterfall trail and the Entebbe airport meet-and-greet. You also have 24-hour in-country support.
International flights, Uganda visa fees, gratuities, porter fees, alcohol beyond house pours and personal expenses are not included. The route threads through the rolling green hills of Masaka and the Ankole cattle country, where long-horned Ankole cows graze alongside the road — a genuine slice of rural Uganda rather than a rushed transit corridor. Arriving at your lodge in the afternoon, there's time for an optional short game drive through Mburo's acacia woodland, home to zebra, eland, impala and defassa waterbuck rarely seen elsewhere in Uganda's gorilla-trekking circuit, before a relaxed dinner and early night ahead of tomorrow's longer drive.
A full but spectacular travel day carries you deeper into Uganda's southwest, climbing out of the Lake Mburo lowlands and along the edge of the Kichwamba escarpment, where the road briefly overlooks the Rift Valley floor and a scattering of crater lakes glinting turquoise against green hillsides. As you near Bwindi, the terrain changes again — terraced hillsides thick with banana and tea plantations give way to the dense, dark tree line of the forest itself, a visibly different ecosystem from anything passed earlier in the day. Arriving at your Buhoma-area lodge in the late afternoon, you'll meet your trekking guide for a briefing on tomorrow's permit and the habituated family you're assigned to, before settling in to the sound of turacos and distant hyrax calls as dusk falls over the forest canopy.
This is the day the entire itinerary exists for. After an early breakfast, you'll join a small trekking group of no more than eight guests at Buhoma park headquarters for a detailed safety briefing — a mandatory seven-meter distance from the gorillas, no flash photography, absolute quiet once the family is located. The trek itself can run anywhere from forty-five minutes to several hours depending on where the family fed and nested overnight, moving through dense, often steep understorey alongside armed rangers and trackers reading broken vegetation for clues. The single hour permitted with the gorillas once found is genuinely hard to describe in advance — a silverback's low rumbling contentment vocalizations, juveniles wrestling through the undergrowth, the startling directness of a gorilla's gaze meeting yours at close range. Most guests call it the most moving wildlife encounter of their lives, and you'll return to the lodge with a personalized trekking certificate.
With your permit fulfilled, today shifts from wildlife to the human story of this landscape. A guided walk led by Batwa elders — the forest's original inhabitants, displaced when Bwindi was gazetted as a national park in 1991 — traces the medicinal plants, hunting techniques and hut-building methods that defined Batwa forest life for millennia, narrated firsthand rather than reconstructed for tourism. In the afternoon, a separate community forest walk along the Buhoma trail follows the park boundary through farmland and forest fringe, past local craft cooperatives selling basketry and woodcarving, with the option to visit a primary school supported in part by regional tourism revenue. It's a deliberately gentler day after yesterday's exertion, and a reminder that Bwindi's conservation success is inseparable from the communities who live alongside it.
A slower final full day in the forest, built around a guided walk to Bwindi's Munyanga waterfall trail, a shaded path following the river through dense understorey where black-and-white colobus monkeys move through the canopy overhead and the forest's prolific birdlife — including the striking African emerald cuckoo and the elusive Grauer's rush warbler, both regional specialties — rewards patient watching. Return to your lodge by midday for a relaxed lunch, with the afternoon left open for a swim, a final browse through Buhoma's craft stalls, or simply time on your veranda watching the tree line for movement. This is intentionally the itinerary's quietest day, giving yesterday's cultural encounters and Day 3's trek room to properly sink in before departure.
A relaxed final morning at your Bwindi lodge — a last breakfast overlooking the forest, time to finish any souvenir shopping in Buhoma — precedes your transfer toward the airstrip or, depending on flight timing, the longer road journey back to Entebbe.
