Entebbe to Masai Mara Safari: Flights, Timings and the Nairobi Connection

The Entebbe to Masai Mara safari route: the three flights through Nairobi, the Wilson Airport transfer, bush-flight baggage, entry papers and the Nairobi night.

An Entebbe to Masai Mara safari has no direct flight, so the journey is three steps through Nairobi: a scheduled flight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a road transfer across the city to Wilson Airport, and a light aircraft to the Mara. Each step is simple. The trap is the timing between them. This page works out the connections, the baggage limit and the entry papers, so that your first game drive happens on the day you planned.

The short answerFor an Entebbe to Masai Mara safari, fly Entebbe to Nairobi, transfer to Wilson Airport, then take a light aircraft to your camp's airstrip. Unless you land early in the morning, sleep in Nairobi and fly to the Mara the next day. Pack a soft bag of about 15 kg and plan four nights near the river.

Facts checked 12 October 2026. Schedules, fees and entry rules change, so we confirm them again when we quote.

Entebbe to Masai Mara safari: the three steps

Everything reaches the Mara through Nairobi. There is no Entebbe to Masai Mara flight, and none links Kigali to the reserve either, so the route is always Entebbe to Nairobi to the Mara. Spell it Entebbe to Maasai Mara or Entebbe to Masai Mara, the route is the same whether you start a safari in Uganda or finish one there.

StepWhat happensTimePlanning note
1. Entebbe to NairobiScheduled flight to Jomo Kenyatta International AirportAbout 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30Several airlines fly it, and Uganda Airlines and Kenya Airways both operate daily in our checks
2. JKIA to Wilson AirportRoad transfer across NairobiAn hour or moreMara flights do not leave from the main airport
3. Wilson Airport to the MaraLight aircraft to your camp's airstripAbout 45 to 60 minutesAirlines include Safarilink, AirKenya and Governors Aviation; check-in closes about an hour before departure

You can drive instead, but we rarely recommend it. Nairobi to the Mara by road is about five to six hours. An overland run from Entebbe adds a border crossing at Busia or Malaba on top of that. Our fly-in or road safari guide explains when the road makes sense. The full leg-by-leg table for every flight in the region sits in the safari flight logistics guide.

Same day or a Nairobi night? The timing rule

If you want to fly Entebbe to the Masai Mara in one day, allow at least three hours between landing at Jomo Kenyatta and the Mara departure. Sleep in Nairobi if you cannot. That window covers immigration and baggage, the drive to Wilson Airport, and check-in, which closes about an hour before the flight. A later landing, or a delay on the Entebbe flight, breaks the chain.

Your Entebbe flight landsWhat worksOur advice
Early morningAn afternoon Mara flight, with a bufferPossible. Choose it only if the first game drive matters more than the margin.
Late morning or afternoonA Nairobi night, then a morning Mara flightThe normal choice. You land at camp rested, with a full first day.
EveningA Nairobi nightThe only workable choice.
Coming from Bwindi the same dayA Nairobi night, alwaysTwo light-aircraft or scheduled legs in one day leave no room for a delay.

Booking your own international flights? Choose an arrival into Entebbe that leaves a clear day before you start. Choose a Nairobi departure a day after the Mara. Ask us for the connection times before you buy a ticket. Schedules change by season, and a low fare saves nothing if it puts the Mara flight at risk.

The buffer also protects the rest of the trip. Light aircraft are delayed by cloud, wind and wet airstrips. A missed connection can cost you the first game drive or, with a tight itinerary, a whole day. A night in Nairobi costs one night. A missed flight can cost more.

Guide's tip. Choose the Nairobi hotel for its position, not its facilities. A hotel on the Wilson side of the city saves a long morning drive, and the airport transfer is then short. Our Nairobi National Park guide covers the south side of the city.

JKIA to Wilson Airport: the transfer that catches people out

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the arrival point for international and regional flights. Wilson Airport is a separate, smaller airport on the south side of the city, and every scheduled Mara flight leaves from there. Operators report that the road transfer takes an hour or more, depending on traffic, so it needs its own slot in the plan.

We meet you at arrivals, carry the transfer, and hold your bags until check-in. Bush-flight check-in is strict. Arrive at Wilson at least an hour before departure, because the desk can close before the aircraft is ready to leave.

Bush flight baggage: pack for 15 kg

Mara airlines cap luggage at about 15 kg a person, hand luggage included, and the bag must be soft. A hard suitcase will not fit the aircraft hold. If you are arriving from a Uganda trip with gorilla boots, a rain jacket and a daypack, the weight adds up quickly.

Leave the rest at your Nairobi hotel or in storage at Entebbe, and collect it on the way home. Our safari luggage weight limits guide covers each carrier, excess baggage and freight seats. Our packing list shows what to bring when you are limited to one soft bag.

Entry and health papers on the Uganda to Masai Mara safari route

Three papers matter on the Uganda to Masai Mara safari route, and each has a guide that owns the detail. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda on one application. A Uganda to Kenya route therefore needs only one visa for both countries. Our East Africa tourist visa guide explains how to apply and where to enter first.

Kenya's travel authorisation

Kenya's electronic travel authorisation is the second. The official guidance we read does not yet settle whether a Tourist Visa holder needs one as well, so confirm it in writing before you fly. The Kenya eTA guide has the steps.

Yellow fever on the Uganda to Kenya route

The third is yellow fever. Uganda dropped its own entry requirement for the certificate on 2 October 2026. Kenya, however, tests the country you arrive from, and Uganda is on its list. Carry the card. The yellow fever certificate guide explains why. For the one-visa route as a whole, see the Uganda Rwanda Kenya safari route guide.

Be aware. Entry rules changed several times in 2026. Treat the dates on this page as checked facts, not promises, and confirm on the official portals before you fly.

Which Mara airstrip will your flight use?

Your camp decides the airstrip, not the airline. Reserve camps are served by strips such as Keekorok, Serena, Musiara and Angama, while conservancy camps use strips such as Olare Orok, Mara North and Siana. A camp normally has one or two to choose from. Flight schedules, and the stops on the way, vary by airline and by season.

That makes the camp choice the first decision, and the flight follows from it. Camps on the river and in the Mara Triangle suit the crossings, while conservancy camps offer fewer vehicles and night drives. Our guide to where to stay in the Masai Mara for the migration compares them, and the Maasai Mara National Reserve guide describes every sector. For the conservancy option, read Mara conservancies for the migration.

Your first day: from the airstrip to the first game drive

When the aircraft lands, your guide is waiting at the airstrip with the safari vehicle. In most camps the drive to your tent is a short game drive in itself, so the safari starts before you unpack. That is why the Nairobi night matters. It lets the Entebbe to Masai Mara safari begin with a morning flight, a late lunch and a full afternoon drive. The alternative is a tired arrival after dark.

Tell us about any illness, medicine or mobility need before the flight. Light aircraft seat only a handful of people, and the crew and your guide can plan the first day around you. Keep valuables, cameras and medication in the cabin bag. Bags in the hold are loaded and unloaded by hand at each stop.

Coming from Bwindi: the gorilla chain into the Mara

If you are trekking gorillas first, the chain is longer: a light aircraft from Bwindi to Entebbe, a scheduled flight to Nairobi, the Wilson transfer, then the flight to the Mara. We never plan all of that in one day. The trek day, the flight out of Bwindi, and a Nairobi night come first, and the Mara follows the next morning.

The pairing is built into our 10 day gorilla trekking and migration safari, quoted on request for your dates. Still deciding whether to combine the two experiences? Our guide to gorillas and the Great Migration settles the months, the gateway and the days.

How many Mara nights to add, and when the herds are there

Plan at least four nights near the river, because the herds decide the timing of a crossing and a short stay gives it too few chances. Herds are normally in the Mara from late July into October. August and September are the strongest weeks, and the first herds start moving out by October. Crossings are never guaranteed, and the herds can wait on a bank for days.

Mara fees and what a Mara stay costs

Our Mara River crossing points guide explains the odds, and the Great Migration in August page covers the busiest month. For scale, our eight-day Kenya Migration Explorer starts from US$6,100 per person, and the fourteen-day Gorillas, Migration and Zanzibar Honeymoon starts from US$11,800 per person. Mara reserve fees are US$200 per adult per day from 1 July 2026, and we confirm 2027 fees in your quote. The wider cost picture is in the Kenya safari cost guide.

Flying back from the Masai Mara to Entebbe or onward

Do not book your international flight home for the day you leave the Mara. The return mirrors the outward journey in reverse: the light aircraft to Wilson Airport, the transfer, and then a scheduled flight from Nairobi. A final night in Nairobi absorbs a delayed bush flight and gives you a calm morning.

If you are flying home from Nairobi, the Entebbe leg is not needed at all. An open-jaw ticket, landing at Entebbe and leaving from Nairobi, saves the backtrack. If you have a spare half day in Entebbe at the start, our Entebbe day trips guide lists what is worth doing around the airport.

Six mistakes on the Entebbe to Masai Mara safari route

  1. Booking the Mara flight from the main airport. The flights leave from Wilson Airport.
  2. Landing at midday and flying to the Mara the same afternoon. The transfer and the check-in cut-off leave no margin.
  3. Packing a hard suitcase. Bush flights need a soft bag of about 15 kg.
  4. Giving the river two or three nights. We plan at least four.
  5. Leaving the yellow fever card in the suitcase. Kenya asks for it from travellers arriving from Uganda.
  6. Flying home the same day you leave the Mara. A delayed bush flight then costs you your international flight.

Plan your Entebbe to Masai Mara safari

  1. Choose your camp first, since the camp decides the airstrip and the flight.
  2. Tell us your Entebbe arrival time, and we decide between a same-day link and a Nairobi night.
  3. Confirm the East Africa Tourist Visa, the Kenya eTA position and your yellow fever card.
  4. We then book the flights, the transfers and the camp, and quote the whole route.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight from Entebbe to the Masai Mara?
No. There is no scheduled Entebbe to Masai Mara flight. The route runs through Nairobi: a scheduled flight from Entebbe to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a road transfer to Wilson Airport, and a light aircraft to your camp's airstrip. Each step is short, but the connections need planning, and we build them into one quoted route.
How long does it take to get from Entebbe to the Masai Mara?
Plan on a full travel day. The Entebbe to Nairobi flight takes about one hour fifteen to one hour thirty, the transfer to Wilson Airport an hour or more, and the light aircraft 45 to 60 minutes, plus check-in and waiting. Most guests do better to sleep in Nairobi and reach the Mara fresh the next morning, with the whole first day ahead.
Do I need a night in Nairobi between Entebbe and the Mara?
Usually yes. Allow at least three hours between landing at Jomo Kenyatta and the Mara departure, because check-in at Wilson closes about an hour before the flight. An early-morning landing can work for an afternoon departure, but a later arrival, or any delay, breaks the chain. A night in Nairobi costs one night; a missed flight can cost more.
Which airport do Masai Mara flights leave from?
Scheduled Mara flights leave from Wilson Airport, a smaller airport on the south side of Nairobi, not from Jomo Kenyatta. Airlines include Safarilink, AirKenya and Governors Aviation. The road transfer between the two airports takes an hour or more depending on traffic, so we give it its own slot and meet you at arrivals.
What is the baggage limit on flights to the Masai Mara?
About 15 kg per person, including hand luggage, in a soft bag, because the aircraft holds are small and a hard suitcase will not fit. If you are coming from a gorilla trek in Uganda, leave spare clothes and boots at your Nairobi hotel or at Entebbe, and collect them on the way home. Excess baggage and freight seats can sometimes be arranged.
Can I fly from Bwindi to the Masai Mara in one day?
We do not plan it. The chain is a light aircraft from Bwindi to Entebbe, a scheduled flight to Nairobi, the Wilson transfer and the flight to the Mara, and any delay breaks it. We place the trek day, the flight out and a Nairobi night first, then fly you to the Mara the next morning, rested and on time for the first game drive.
Which visa and health papers do I need for Uganda and the Masai Mara?
The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda on one application. Kenya's electronic travel authorisation is a separate question we confirm in writing before you fly. Uganda dropped its own yellow fever entry requirement on 2 October 2026, but Kenya tests the country you arrive from, so carry the card. Rules change, so we recheck them at quote time.
How many nights should I spend in the Mara after Uganda?
At least four nights near the river. The herds are usually in the Mara from late July to October, strongest in August and September, and crossings are never guaranteed, so a short stay gives the herds too few chances. Add a Nairobi night on each side to absorb flight delays, and do not book your international flight home for the day you leave the Mara.
