The short answerOn a private route you travel with your own vehicle and a driver-guide who finds the wildlife, reads animal behaviour, keeps the day on time and keeps the group safe. On a gorilla trek the park rangers lead the group on the forest trail, and your guide brings you to the trailhead and looks after the rest of the day. What a private safari guide changes on your trip

A good guide turns a drive through a park into a safari. They spot an animal long before you do, know where a leopard rests in the heat of the day, read the signs that a herd is about to cross a river, and know when to stay and when to move on. They also plan the day around the light and the weather, so you are at the right place at the right hour.

The guide is also the person who keeps you safe and comfortable: explaining park rules, keeping a safe distance from animals, handling the practical side of the day from lunch stops to fuel, and being the calm voice when plans change. It is the reason a private route feels easy rather than rushed.

Driver-guides, park rangers and trackers: who does what

On a drive in a game park, your driver-guide is with you all day in your own vehicle. On a gorilla trek in Uganda or Rwanda it works differently: the park rangers and trackers lead the group on the forest trail, and your guide takes you to the trailhead, waits for you, and looks after the rest of the day. On a boat, a walk or a cultural visit, a local guide from the area often joins the day for the part they know best.

Knowing this helps you plan: your guide is your constant companion across the route, and the specialists you meet along the way each bring something that belongs to that place.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I travel with my own guide on a private safari?
On our private routes you travel with your own vehicle and a driver-guide rather than sharing with other guests. We confirm the arrangement in your quote.
What does a safari guide actually do?
A guide finds the wildlife, reads animal behaviour, plans the day around the light and the weather, explains the park rules, keeps the group safe and handles the practical side of the day.
Who leads a gorilla trek?
The park rangers and trackers lead the group on the forest trail. Your guide takes you to the trailhead and looks after the rest of the day.
Can I choose the language of my guide?
Tell us the language you want when you send your dates and we confirm what we can arrange. Our team works in English, German and Spanish.
Should I tip my safari guide?
Tips are a normal part of a guide's income. The usual amounts depend on the country and the group size, and our tipping guide sets them out country by country.
Can I ask for the same guide on a second trip?
Tell us when you write that you travelled with us before and who you liked, and we do our best to arrange it, subject to their availability.
What should I ask my guide on the first morning?
Tell them what you most want to see, how early you like to start and whether you want long drives or more time at each sighting. A good guide plans the days around your answers.
Can guides help with photography?
Tell your guide at the start that you want to photograph, and they will position the vehicle for the light and allow time at each sighting. Say if you want a vehicle with fewer seats for extra room.
