The best lodges in Bwindi are the ones in the right sector for your gorilla permit, because the forest is big, the roads between sectors are slow, and a lodge that looks perfect on a map can be half a day's drive from your trek. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, in south-western Uganda, has four trekking sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo) and a small set of lodges, camps and cottages around each one. Travellers search for this as best Bwindi lodges, where to stay in Bwindi, Bwindi accommodation, Bwindi gorilla lodges, luxury lodges in Bwindi, gorilla trekking lodges in Uganda and Bwindi forest lodges. This guide answers all of them in one place: how to choose, which lodges sit in which sector, which ones suit luxury, comfort, value, views, couples, families and older travellers, how many nights to book and the mistakes that cost guests their best rooms.
Quick answer
For luxury in Bwindi, the lodges guests ask for most are Bwindi Lodge and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp at Buhoma, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge at Nkuringo and Four Gorillas Lodge at Rushaga. For comfortable mid-range stays, look at Mahogany Springs, Buhoma Lodge and Engagi Lodge at Buhoma, and Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge at Rushaga. For the best views, Clouds at Nkuringo sits on a ridge at about 2,100 metres above sea level, with the Virunga volcanoes in front of it.
The rule that matters more than any ranking: sleep in the sector where your gorilla permit is issued. Your permit is for one sector on one date, and the sectors are hours apart by road. Book the permit first, then the lodge. Most Bwindi lodges have about a dozen rooms or fewer, so the good ones fill many months ahead.

Chapter 01: How do you choose where to stay in Bwindi?
Choose the sector first and the lodge second. The sector decides which gorilla families you can be assigned, how far you travel on the morning of the trek and how the whole trip fits together. The lodge decides how you feel while you are there.
Every gorilla permit in Bwindi is issued for a named sector, and the briefing starts at that sector's trailhead at about 7:30 in the morning. The sectors are separate road journeys. Buhoma and Ruhija are on the northern side of the park, Rushaga and Nkuringo on the southern side, and going from one side to the other takes most of a day on gravel roads. A lodge in the wrong sector means a very early start, a long transfer or a trek you cannot reach at all.
So the order is: pick your dates, secure the permit, note the sector, and only then look at lodges in that sector. If you want to compare what the four sectors are like, how hard the trails are and which one suits a first-timer, read our Bwindi sector guide. This page starts where that one stops, with the lodges themselves.
Three other things shape the choice: how many nights you want, who is travelling (a couple, a family, someone with limited mobility) and how much of the budget you want to spend on the room versus the rest of the safari. The chapters below take each one in turn.
Chapter 02: Which are the best lodges in Bwindi overall?
Four lodges come up more than any others when people ask for the best: two at Buhoma, one at Nkuringo and one at Rushaga.
Bwindi Lodge, Buhoma. A small luxury lodge just outside the Buhoma gate, set on the edge of the ridge with forest views from the rooms. Guides and lodge reviews describe a spa, private butler service and chalet-style rooms. It is run by Volcanoes Safaris. It is the choice for guests who want the most polished Buhoma stay.
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Buhoma. A small tented camp within a few minutes' walk of the park headquarters where the trek briefing takes place. It is described as luxury or exclusive and is built from a small number of tents, fewer than a dozen. Its strength is location: you can walk to the briefing.
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Nkuringo. One of the highest lodges in Uganda, at about 2,100 metres, with cottages, a butler and views toward the Virunga volcanoes. It is the best view in Bwindi and the right base for the Nkuringo sector, which has the park's steepest and most scenic trekking.
Four Gorillas Lodge, Rushaga. The lodge most often named as the most luxurious in the Rushaga sector, with cottages that have balconies facing the forest and a short drive to the trekking start. Rushaga is the sector with the largest share of habituated families, so a lodge here gives the widest choice of gorilla groups.
Guides and operators sometimes disagree on which tier a lodge belongs to. A lodge one source calls luxury another calls upper mid-range. For that reason this guide groups lodges by what you get, not by a star rating.
Chapter 03: What are the best lodges in Buhoma?
Buhoma has the widest choice of any sector, because it was the first to open for gorilla trekking and the park headquarters is in the village. A trek from here usually starts within minutes of the lodge.
The lodges guests ask for most at Buhoma:
- Bwindi Lodge for luxury, spa and private service, with forest views from the ridge.
- Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp for a small luxury tented camp within walking distance of the briefing.
- Mahogany Springs Lodge for a dozen spacious cottages about a kilometre from the park headquarters. Sources split between calling it luxury and calling it good value for what it offers, which tells you it sits at the upper end of mid-range.
- Buhoma Lodge for chalets about two minutes' walk from the trekking assembly point.
- Engagi Lodge for stilted cottages set a short distance outside the gate, a good compromise between comfort and cost.
Buhoma also has simple guesthouses and bandas for guests who want a bed and a hot shower and not much more. The honest strengths of the sector are choice, a village with a few shops and a path to the park headquarters. Its honest limit is that the forest here is lower and warmer than at Ruhija or Nkuringo, and the trails, while rewarding, do not have the long views of the south.
Chapter 04: What are the best lodges in Ruhija?
Ruhija is the cool, high, quiet northern sector, and it has the shortest list of places to stay. Most lodges here are small, simple and run by families or community groups. Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge, with about eight en-suite cottages, is the name that appears most often.
Ruhija suits guests who put the forest ahead of the lodge. It has a cooler climate, more challenging trails and some of the larger gorilla families, and it is the base for the Mubwindi Swamp walk that birders make for the African green broadbill (our birding in Bwindi guide covers it). If you have a Ruhija permit, book the lodge early, because the choice is small. If comfort is your first priority, ask us whether a sector with more lodges would suit you better, and we will check what permits are available for your dates.
Chapter 05: What are the best lodges in Rushaga?
Rushaga is the busiest of the southern sectors and has the highest number of habituated gorilla families, so many guests are given Rushaga permits. It also has the broadest spread of accommodation in the south, from comfortable cottages to simple camps.
- Four Gorillas Lodge for the most comfortable stay in the sector, with about eight cottages and forest-facing balconies, a short drive from the trekking start.
- Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge for well-priced cottages on green slopes close to the trekking start points.
- Gorilla Safari Lodge and Rushaga Gorilla Camp for mid-range and eco-style stays near the sector's trailheads.
- Lakeside lodges at Mutanda and Mulehe for guests who want a lake setting. These are a drive from the trekking start, an hour or more in some cases, so check the distance for your permit date.
Rushaga is also the only sector that offers the gorilla habituation experience, which we cover in our gorilla habituation guide. If that is your plan, a lodge in Rushaga is not optional.
Chapter 06: What are the best lodges in Nkuringo?
Nkuringo is the south-western sector, built on steep ridges with some of the best views in Bwindi. It has a small number of lodges and the most dramatic setting of any of them.
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is the headline stay: cottages at about 2,100 metres with views of the Virunga volcanoes and, on a clear day, the volcano Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is the value choice, a ridge-top lodge of about sixteen rooms with fireplaces and terraces and the same views at a lower level of comfort.
Nkuringo trekking is steep. It is the sector where we ask guests the most questions about fitness before we book. If you want to walk from Buhoma to Nkuringo over the forest, our Buhoma to Nkuringo guide explains the route and where you sleep along the way.
Chapter 07: Which Bwindi lodges are the most luxurious?
The luxury end of Bwindi is small, which is the point. Luxury here means fewer than a dozen rooms, a private butler or guide, a spa or fireplace, and a setting at the edge of the forest. The lodges guests most often put in this group are Bwindi Lodge and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp at Buhoma, Clouds at Nkuringo and Four Gorillas Lodge at Rushaga.
What the money buys is service, space and quiet: larger rooms, private service, a spa or a fireplace, and a setting on the edge of the forest. What it does not buy is a different gorilla trek. Everyone, whatever the lodge, treks for one hour in a group of eight with the same rangers.
If you plan a luxury trip, ask us for a route that links these lodges with Queen Elizabeth and Murchison, as in our complete Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison safari.
Chapter 08: Which are the best mid-range lodges in Bwindi?
Mid-range in Bwindi means clean, comfortable cottages with en-suite bathrooms, a restaurant, a fire in the evening and a staff that looks after you well. The lodges that guests and guides most often name here are Mahogany Springs, Buhoma Lodge and Engagi Lodge at Buhoma, and Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge at Rushaga.
This is the group where most of our guests stay, and it is the best value in the park. The difference from the luxury group is mostly in the extras: the spa, the butler, the size of the rooms. The forest, the food and the walk to the trailhead are close to the same.
Chapter 09: Which are the best value or budget lodges in Bwindi?
Value lodges in Bwindi are smaller, plainer and cheaper, and many are community-owned. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge and a number of simple camps and bandas at all four sectors fit here. You get a bed, a hot shower, meals and a welcome that is often warmer than at the bigger lodges.
Expect fewer extras, simpler rooms and less choice at dinner. Do not expect a bad night. The guests we send to value lodges are usually happy, because the trek is the thing they came for and they sleep soundly after it.
Chapter 10: Which Bwindi lodges have the best views?
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge at Nkuringo and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge have the longest views, over ridges and, on clear days, the Virunga volcanoes. Bwindi Lodge at Buhoma looks across the forest edge from its ridge. Four Gorillas Lodge at Rushaga faces the forest from private balconies, and the lakeside lodges at Mutanda and Mulehe look over water.
Cloud and mist are normal in Bwindi, so no view is guaranteed. Mornings are clearest, and the dry months of June to August and December to February give the best chance.
Chapter 11: Which lodges suit couples and honeymooners?
The luxury lodges with private service, fireplaces and secluded cottages suit couples best, and so do the ridge lodges with views. Bwindi Lodge, Sanctuary, Clouds and Four Gorillas are the ones we propose first. If the trip is a honeymoon, read our Uganda honeymoon safari guide for how to plan around the trek and where to relax afterwards.
Chapter 12: Which lodges suit families and older travellers?
Families need two things: lodges that accept children and a sector with gentler trekking. Children must be 15 to trek, so many families travel with teenagers and leave younger children at the lodge or at home; our Uganda family safari guide covers this. Older travellers do best at Buhoma, where trails are usually gentler and the lodges are close to the briefing point. Our age limit and seniors guide explains the rules, porters and the carrying chair.
Chapter 13: How many nights should you book at a Bwindi lodge?
Two nights at the least. Arrive the day before your trek so that the long road or the flight has no effect on the morning, and keep the day after free. A third night gives you rest, a village walk, a Batwa cultural visit or a bird walk, and removes the risk of a delay at either end.
Our Entebbe to Bwindi guide shows how long each road and flight takes, which decides when you can arrive. If you plan more than one trek, or a habituation day, book more nights.
Chapter 14: When should you book a Bwindi lodge?
As soon as you have a permit date, and for peak months, before. Most of the lodges named in this guide have about a dozen rooms or fewer, so the good ones sell out. June to August and December to February are the busiest months. April, May and November are quieter and may carry a discounted permit, which we explain in our Uganda gorilla permit discount guide.
The permit and the lodge must match. If a lodge is full on your permit date, we look at a nearby lodge in the same sector, or ask UWA whether the permit can move to another date or sector, which is only possible within UWA's rules and fees. For how permits are booked and when, read our guide to booking gorilla permits.
Chapter 15: What is included in a Bwindi lodge rate?
Most Bwindi lodges quote full board, which means a bed, breakfast, a packed lunch for the trek, dinner and often drinking water. Many include laundry. Drinks, tips, spa treatments and transfers are usually extra. The gorilla permit is never part of a lodge rate; it is bought separately from UWA through a licensed operator.
On your written quotation each line is shown, so you can see what the lodge covers and what sits outside it.
Chapter 16: What mistakes do guests make when choosing a Bwindi lodge?
- Booking the lodge before the permit. The permit decides the sector.
- Booking the wrong sector. A lodge in Buhoma is not near a Rushaga trek.
- Choosing by photo alone. A hillside view means a steep walk from the dining room.
- Booking one night. A long journey and an early trek leave no margin.
- Choosing a lakeside lodge for the lake. Mutanda and Mulehe are lovely and also a drive from the trailheads.
- Ignoring the mud. All of Bwindi is wet in the rains. Ask what the lodge provides for wet boots and clothes.
- Leaving it late. The rooms are few, and the best sell out first.
Chapter 17: What is the verdict?
For a first trip with a high level of comfort, choose Bwindi Lodge or Sanctuary at Buhoma. For the most dramatic setting, choose Clouds at Nkuringo. For the widest choice of gorilla families with a very good lodge, choose Four Gorillas at Rushaga. For comfort at a lower price, choose Mahogany Springs, Buhoma Lodge or Engagi at Buhoma, or Ichumbi at Rushaga. For value, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge or a simple camp in the right sector.
