Why the Seychelles is genuinely different from Zanzibar
A safari runs on an early-rising, high-alert rhythm, and almost any beach finish will feel restorative by comparison. What the Seychelles adds on top of that is privacy and scale of scenery: house-sized granite boulders tumbling into the sea, dense tropical forest running down to the sand, and several of our properties operated as single-resort private islands, which is a different order of exclusivity to anything on Zanzibar's coast. It suits travelers for whom "the best" matters more than the price difference, and it genuinely suits a different kind of trip — fewer organized excursions, fewer "things to do" in the checklist sense, more days built around a single extraordinary beach.
The Seychelles in depth
Mahé is the main island, home to the capital Victoria, the international airport, and Morne Seychellois National Park, which covers roughly a fifth of the island in forested peaks right behind the coastal hotels. Praslin, a short flight or ferry away, is known for the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO-listed primeval palm forest and the only place on earth the giant coco de mer palm grows wild, alongside some of the Seychelles' most photographed beaches. La Digue, reached by ferry from Praslin, moves at an even slower pace, largely car-free, with bicycles and ox-carts as the main transport, and is home to Anse Source d'Argent — among the most photographed beaches in the world. The outer coral islands, several of them operated as single-resort private islands (North Island, Fregate Island, Six Senses Zil Pasyon, Platte Island), take the exclusivity a step further again.
Giant Aldabra tortoises, found both in the wild on remote Aldabra Atoll and in managed sanctuaries on the inhabited islands, are one of the destination's signature wildlife experiences — a genuine wildlife encounter to bookend a safari that began with lions, elephants or gorillas. Most visitors combine a safari with two Seychelles islands rather than all three, since inter-island transfer costs and time add up quickly on a shorter trip — Mahé plus Praslin, or Mahé plus one private island, are the most common pairings.
Visa and entry requirements
The Seychelles has one of the most traveler-friendly entry systems in the world: there is no visa to apply for in advance for the vast majority of nationalities. Instead, a Visitor's Permit is issued free on arrival, provided you can show a passport valid for your entire stay, a return or onward ticket, confirmed accommodation for every night of your visit, and proof of sufficient funds (as a guideline, the equivalent of around US$150 per day of your stay). Seychelles immigration also requires an online travel authorization form to be completed in advance via the government's own portal (seychelles.govtas.com) — straightforward, but easy to forget amid safari planning, so build it into your pre-departure checklist.
The yellow fever certificate — read this before you book
This is the single most important practical fact on this entire page, and it's routinely missed in general travel content: the Seychelles requires a valid International Certificate of Vaccination against yellow fever for any traveler arriving from, or who has transited through, a country classified as having yellow fever risk — and Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda all fall into that category. This applies even for a short layover in one of those countries, not just a multi-day stay, and it applies regardless of how healthy or recently vaccinated for other things you are.
In practical terms: if your trip is a safari in any of our four core countries followed by a Seychelles extension, you will be asked for this certificate on arrival in the Seychelles, and without it you risk being denied entry or vaccinated on the spot at the airport under far less comfortable circumstances than a scheduled clinic visit at home. The yellow fever vaccine itself generally needs to be given at least 10 days before arrival to be valid, and ideally should be arranged 4–8 weeks ahead of travel as part of a broader pre-trip health consultation, since it's a live vaccine not suitable for everyone (check with a travel health clinic if you're pregnant, immunocompromised, or have an egg allergy).
Health and vaccination guidance
- Malaria: the Seychelles has no malaria risk at all, unlike the safari portion of your trip — no antimalarial coverage is needed once you're there (though you'd still need it for the safari beforehand).
- Dengue and chikungunya: some mosquito-borne risk exists, elevated in the wetter months (roughly November through March) — daytime mosquito-bite prevention matters even where malaria isn't a concern.
- Routine and recommended vaccines: Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly recommended for the broader trip, alongside being up to date on routine boosters; a rabies pre-exposure series is sometimes recommended for longer or more rural trips.
- Timing: because several of these vaccines involve multiple doses spaced weeks apart, book a travel health consultation at least 6–8 weeks before departure wherever possible.

The pattern is clear: a Kenya-based safari sets up the easiest possible Seychelles connection. If your safari is in Uganda, Tanzania or Rwanda, a short Nairobi connection is achievable within a single travel day from most safari camps, but it is a connection, not a direct flight — build the extra time in.
How many days to allocate
Because the flights and cost are higher than Zanzibar's, 5–7 nights makes more sense as a minimum to justify the journey — fewer than that can feel like a lot of travel for not much time on the ground. If combining two islands (for example Mahé plus Praslin, or Mahé plus a private island), add at least 2 nights per additional island once inter-island ferries or flights are factored in.

Because the Seychelles sits close to the equator, temperatures don't swing dramatically year-round — the bigger variable is rainfall and wind pattern, not heat. If your safari dates are fixed around a migration window or a gorilla permit, it's usually more practical to let the safari dates drive the trip and simply note which of the above conditions your Seychelles leg will fall into.
Common mistakes
- Booking Seychelles without the yellow fever certificate in hand. This is the single most consequential mistake on this page — arriving without it after a Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda or Rwanda safari risks being denied entry or vaccinated on arrival under far worse circumstances than a scheduled appointment weeks earlier.
- Under-budgeting relative to Zanzibar. The two destinations are not comparably priced even at the same nominal "tier" — treat the Seychelles as a meaningfully higher-cost add-on from the outset.
- Assuming a direct flight exists where it doesn't. Only Nairobi connects directly to Mahé in this region — Entebbe, Kilimanjaro and Kigali all route via Nairobi (or further afield).
- Allocating too few nights given the distance and cost involved. Fewer than about 5 nights can make the journey feel disproportionate to the time spent on the ground.
