A night in Nairobi, four nights beside the Mara River by light aircraft, and a flight home from Nairobi
Itinerary ref: KE-008
A 6 day Masai Mara migration fly-in safari puts you beside the Mara River for four nights without a single day lost on the road. You sleep once in Nairobi, fly from Wilson Airport to the Mara on a light aircraft and fly back on day six. It suits travellers with under a week to spare who want the wildebeest and the river crossings, between late July and early October.
Send us your dates and the number of travellers, and we will check camp space and flight seats for the 6 day Masai Mara migration fly-in safari.
Enquire About This SafariThis is a short safari built around one decision: spend the days at the river, not on the road. The drive from Nairobi to the Mara takes five to six hours each way, so a drive-in safari of the same length leaves you roughly two fewer days with the herds. By air, the Mara is under an hour from Nairobi, and the first game drive starts the same morning you land.
The shape is simple. You arrive in Nairobi, rest for the night, fly to the Mara in the morning and stay four nights at a riverside camp. On day six you fly back to Nairobi and connect to your flight home. Nothing else is in the way: no second country, no cross-border step and no long transfer.
Not sure that six days is the right length? Our migration safari planning guide compares the options. Want a full week of crossings in several sectors instead? See the Kenya Migration Explorer.
Five nights, two flights and no drive longer than a transfer. The flight times below are the ones we plan with, and each is confirmed when you book.
| Night | Place | Stay | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nairobi, Kenya | A hotel on the Wilson Airport side of the city | Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfer by road |
| 2 to 5 | Maasai Mara, Kenya | Sanctuary Olonana | Light aircraft from Wilson Airport, about 45 to 60 minutes |
| 6 (day) | Departure | Departure from Nairobi | Light aircraft to Wilson Airport, then a road transfer to Jomo Kenyatta |
Camps are held for your dates when you book. If one is unavailable, we offer a close alternative nearby before you pay.

Here is the trip in order, from the landing in Nairobi to the flight home.
Your driver meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and takes you across the city to a hotel near Wilson Airport. No game drive is planned today. The night is the safeguard of the whole trip, because it puts you at the airstrip rested and on time, whatever time your international flight lands.
After breakfast you cross to Wilson Airport and board the light aircraft for the Mara. Your guide meets the flight at the airstrip, and the drive to camp becomes your first game drive. After lunch at Sanctuary Olonana, the afternoon is spent along the river, learning where the herds have been gathering.
You leave at first light with a packed breakfast and head for the stretches of river where the herds come to drink. The vehicle waits in a good position and stays put, because a crossing starts and ends on the herd's schedule. If the animals turn back, the same bank still gives you hippos, crocodiles and vultures at close range.
The middle of the 6 day Masai Mara migration fly-in safari is yours to steer. Return to the bank you watched yesterday, follow the columns across the plains, or give the morning to a lion pride or a cheetah on the move. Your guide reads the dawn sightings and advises. An optional sunrise balloon flight can be added to the quote for this morning.
The final full day of the 6 day Masai Mara fly-in safari keeps its plan loose on purpose. If a herd has been massing at the water, the guide returns to it; if not, the day goes to the big cats and elephants. A sundowner on the plains closes the stay, and you pack for the flight.
A short morning drive precedes the flight back to Wilson Airport. A transfer then takes you to Jomo Kenyatta International for an evening departure. If your flight leaves earlier, we recommend adding a night in Nairobi to the end of the trip.
The road from Nairobi crosses the Rift Valley escarpment and ends on rough tracks, which is why the trip takes five to six hours each way. Flying replaces roughly eleven hours of road across a six-day stay with about two hours in the air. You arrive rested, with the afternoon free for a drive, and you leave on the last morning with a full game drive behind you.
The saving matters most in migration season, when each extra morning at the river raises your chances. Our guide to fly-in versus road safaris sets the two methods side by side, and a 6 day Masai Mara fly-in safari is the clearest case for flying. Flying costs more than the road, and we say so in your quote; for a six-day trip the days you gain usually outweigh the fare.
The herds are in the Maasai Mara from late July to October, and the crossings are likeliest from mid-August to mid-September. A herd chooses its own moment. It can gather at the bank, mill and turn away for days, so no operator can promise a crossing. Four nights give you three full days beside the river, which is long enough to see the herds in motion and to wait for a crossing.
Your camp sits on the water, so the drive to the first viewing spots is short and the vehicle can be in position before the traffic builds. Each morning your guide decides where to wait from the early sightings. To understand the odds, read our guide to Mara River crossing points, then follow the latest reports on where the migration is now.

Late July to early October is the best time. The herds are in Kenya, the river is busy, and the grass is still short from the dry months. These are also the busiest weeks of the year, so camp space and flight seats go first. Our guide on how far ahead to book a migration safari gives lead times by month, and the Great Migration in August and in September describe the two peak months.
Outside those months, the herds are usually in Tanzania. The Mara still holds lions, cheetahs, elephants and a large resident population of plains game, but a 6 day Masai Mara migration fly-in safari then becomes a big-cat safari, and we plan it that way. The Great Migration by month shows where the herds are in every month.
Mara flights leave from Wilson Airport, Nairobi's domestic airport, not from Jomo Kenyatta International. Safarilink, Air Kenya and Governors Aviation fly the route, and the airline is confirmed in your documents. The flight takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and longer if the aircraft makes a stop at another airstrip on the way. In peak season the airlines add extra midday departures.
The aircraft are small, so the rules on a 6 day Maasai Mara fly-in safari are firm. Each traveller may carry about 15 kg, hand luggage included, in a soft bag. Check-in closes about an hour before departure. Pack for the Mara with our guide to safari luggage weight limits, and leave spare clothes at your Nairobi hotel. Weather can delay a flight, which is the reason the first night is spent in Nairobi.
One camp holds all four Mara nights, chosen for its position: Sanctuary Olonana sits on a private stretch of the Mara River, with the Siria Escarpment behind it.
A full camp is replaced by a close alternative, and you are told before you pay. Our guide on where to stay in the Masai Mara for the migration compares the banks.
Sanctuary Olonana has fourteen suites that face the Mara River, and guests hear the hippos after dark. It is an established camp rather than a boutique one, which suits a first Kenya safari that still wants real river positioning. Because a 5 night Masai Mara migration safari spends every Mara night at one camp, you unpack once and spend the saved time in the vehicle.
Prefer a different style? On request we price the same route at Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp for its balloon launch site and lower vehicle density, at Little Governors' Camp for its boat-access setting, or at Angama Mara for the view over the Mara Triangle. Each changes the quote, so ask before you decide.

A six-day safari has no spare night at the end, so the last day needs care. The morning flight from the Mara lands at Wilson Airport around midday, and a road transfer takes you to Jomo Kenyatta International. We therefore plan the 6 day Masai Mara migration fly-in safari with an international departure in the evening, and we ask you to check the time with us before you buy your ticket.
If your flight leaves earlier, add a night in Nairobi at the end. It turns the day into a relaxed one, absorbs a late bush flight and leaves time for a short wildlife visit; our Nairobi National Park guide covers the choices. We quote the extra night as an option.
A single country keeps the paperwork light on a 6 day Masai Mara wildebeest migration safari. We advise insurance that covers medical evacuation, and our insurance guide explains why. Treat the points above as checked facts rather than promises, and verify them on the official portals before you fly.
The price depends on your dates, the number of travellers and camp availability, so we quote it per person on request. Every quote lists the items below.
| Item | Covers |
|---|---|
| Flights inside the route | Wilson Airport to the Mara and back; the bush flights cap the bag at about 15 kg, soft-sided |
| Camp | Four nights at Sanctuary Olonana, with the meal plan written into your quote |
| Nairobi | One night at a hotel on the Wilson Airport side, plus every airport and airstrip transfer |
| Reserve fees | Daily Mara fees, itemised; the reserve fee is US$200 per adult per day from 1 July 2026 |
| Vehicle and guide | A private 4x4 safari vehicle with a driver-guide for every game drive |
