How far ahead to book a migration safari depends on the month: at least 9 to 12 months for July to September and for February, and at least 6 to 8 months for June, October and January. It gives the lead time for every part of the year, explains which camps sell out first, shows how to count back for 2027 travel, and sets out what you can still do if your dates are closer than the guide.

The short answer How far ahead to book a migration safari: at least 9 to 12 months for July to September river crossings and for February calving, at least 10 to 12 months for Christmas and New Year, at least 6 to 8 months for June, October and January, and at least 3 to 6 months for the green season. Camps nearest the river and the calving plains sell out first.

Facts checked 12 October 2026. Fees, schedules and herd positions change, so we confirm them again when we quote.

How far ahead to book a migration safari, by travel period

The lead time depends on how many people want the same weeks, and that depends on what the herds are doing. The table gives the least time we advise for each period.

Travel periodWhat draws the demandBook at least
July to SeptemberMara River crossings9 to 12 months ahead
FebruaryCalving in the southern Serengeti9 to 12 months ahead
Christmas and New YearPeak-priced holiday weeks10 to 12 months ahead
June, October, JanuaryGrumeti crossings, southbound herds, early calving6 to 8 months ahead
Green season (March to May, November)Quieter parks, lower rates3 to 6 months ahead

Treat every figure as a floor, not a target. Earlier is safer, and early booking matters more than perfect dates. You cannot create a bed in a camp that has already sold out. The terms are shown on each itinerary page.

The table tells you when to book, not what it costs or which month to pick. For money, read what a Great Migration safari costs. For the month itself, use the Great Migration by month.

Why migration camps sell out first

Peak crossing-point camps and calving-zone camps sell out first. Three facts show why position matters so much.

  • Limited beds. Mara conservancies limit both beds and vehicles by design.
  • Positions that move. Mobile and seasonal camps move two or three times a year to follow the herds, so availability and positions change every season.
  • Distance matters. Viewing time depends on how far the camp is from the river, and a camp 20 minutes from the river can give about two extra hours of viewing a day compared with one 90 minutes away, so ask how far each camp is from the action.

Mid-August to mid-September is the likeliest window for Mara River crossings, and February is the heart of calving. Those are the periods at the top of the table.

Guide's tip. Leave room in the plan as well as in the dates. A split stay across two camp areas gives you a second chance if the herds shift.

When to book a Mara River crossing safari

Book a Mara River crossing safari at least nine to twelve months ahead for July to September. Crossings can happen many times a week in August and September, in both directions, but never on a fixed day, so the safest plan is at least four nights, booked early, rather than a perfect date. The Kenyan central Mara draws the most vehicles in peak weeks, while the Tanzanian side around Kogatende and Lamai is generally quieter.

Our Kenya Migration Explorer: Maasai Mara River Crossings runs eight days from US$6,100 per person, in a private 4x4, for late July to early October. For the weeks and the river detail, read Mara River crossing timing.

Be aware. Booking early gives you the best choice of camp, but it cannot guarantee a crossing. No operator can promise one, because the herds follow rain and grass, and they can run two to four weeks early or late.

Book a calving season safari: February needs the longest lead

February needs the longest lead time of any calving month, because it is the peak and the herds sit on the short-grass southern plains around Ndutu, Kakesio and Lake Masek. Hundreds of thousands of calves are born there, most within a few weeks, and cheetahs, lions and hyena clans work the open ground. Calving-zone camps sell out first, and some are mobile, so their positions are set season by season.

The Tanzania Grand Migration Explorer runs ten days from US$7,200 per person, timed for calving from late December to March or for crossings from late June to September. Our Serengeti calving season guide explains the timing in full.

Great Migration 2027 booking: what to do now

For Great Migration 2027 booking, count back from the month you want to travel and compare it with the table. If you are already inside the lead time, ask now.

  • July to September 2027: book at least 9 to 12 months ahead. These are the weeks to start with, because the peak crossing-point camps sell out first.
  • February 2027: book at least 9 to 12 months ahead. Calving-zone camps sell out first, so if February is close, ask now and be ready to adjust your dates.
  • Christmas and New Year: book at least 10 to 12 months ahead. For early December, which is quieter, book as early as you can and we confirm availability when we quote.
  • June, October and January 2027: book at least 6 to 8 months ahead.
  • March to May 2027 and November: book at least 3 to 6 months ahead.

Availability is confirmed when we quote, and we say plainly when a camp or a week is not open. Planning the route first helps, because it tells you which camp area to ask about. Our guide to planning a Great Migration safari step by step sets out that order. For the wider background, read our Great Migration safari guide.

Last minute migration safari: what you can still do

A last minute migration safari is still possible outside the tightest weeks, but you will have fewer choices. These options keep a trip open when your dates are closer than the guide.

  • Shift to the edges of the window. The weeks either side of mid-August to mid-September are outside the likeliest crossing window, so ask us what is open, knowing the odds of a crossing are lower.
  • Choose October. Crossings still occur, often southbound, with quieter camps and lower rates than peak.
  • Look at the Western Corridor. Grumeti River crossings usually run from late May to early July, with far fewer vehicles.
  • Split the stay. On a longer trip, three nights in each of two areas gives you more combinations of camp and date to try.
  • Accept a different camp. A camp further from the river can still work if the transfers are planned well, though you lose some viewing time each day.

The later you book, the more camp position you may have to trade for date. If your month is a poor fit for your goal, we say so and offer an alternative. Our month-by-month guide shows what each one offers, and the first-time safari planning guide helps if this is your first trip.

What to have ready before you ask for a quote

Quotes arrive faster and fit better when you bring five facts.

  1. Your dates, and how many days either way they can move.
  2. Who is travelling, with ages, because minimum ages at some camps are 6, 8 or 12.
  3. The passport you travel on, since nationality decides visas.
  4. The side you prefer, Tanzania, Kenya or both, or that you are open.
  5. What you most want to see: calving, crossings or the herds in general.

With those five facts we can check which camp areas are open and return a written quote with your dates, group and route.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a Great Migration safari?
Book at least nine to twelve months ahead for July to September river crossings and for February calving, and at least ten to twelve months ahead for Christmas and New Year. June, October and January need at least six to eight months, and the green season at least three to six. Treat these as minimums, because early booking matters more than perfect dates.
Can I book a migration safari at the last minute?
Sometimes, but with fewer choices. The tightest weeks are mid-August to mid-September and February, when the peak camps sell out first. Outside those weeks, October, the Western Corridor, the edges of the crossing window and split stays can all keep a trip open. We confirm availability when we quote and tell you plainly if a week is not open.
When should I book for February calving season?
Book at least nine to twelve months ahead. February is the peak of calving, when hundreds of thousands of calves are born on the southern plains within a few weeks, and camps around Ndutu, Kakesio and Lake Masek are limited and partly mobile. If February is already close, ask now, and consider late January or March, when the herds are usually still on the short grass.
When should I book a Mara River crossing safari for 2027?
Start now. For July to September 2027, book at least nine to twelve months ahead, and if you are already inside that window, ask straight away. Mid-August to mid-September is the likeliest window for crossings, and the peak crossing-point camps sell out first. A crossing is never guaranteed, so allow enough nights and book early for the best choice of camp.
Why do migration camps sell out so early?
Peak crossing-point and calving-zone camps sell out first. Mara conservancies limit beds and vehicles, and mobile camps move two or three times a year, so positions change every season. A camp 20 minutes from the river can give about two extra hours of viewing a day compared with one 90 minutes away, so ask how far each camp is from the action.
Is it risky to book a year ahead?
The main risk is that the herds run two to four weeks early or late with the rains, so no date is certain a year out. Choose the middle of the window, allow at least four nights in the main area, and on a longer trip consider a split stay. The terms for changes are shown on each itinerary page, so read them before you confirm. Booking early gives you the best choice of camps.
