Where to stay in Zanzibar depends on three things: the tide, the time you will spend in transfers and the kind of evening you want. The island's coasts behave differently. The north swims at any tide and faces the sunset, the east swims mainly at high tide and faces the sunrise, and Stone Town is a historic city, not a beach. This guide explains how to choose: each area with its airport transfer time, which coast suits couples, families, divers and kitesurfers, how the tides and the rains change the choice, how long to stay in each place, and what transfers cost as a market range, with the errors that spoil a beach stay. People search for it as where to stay in Zanzibar, best area to stay in Zanzibar, Zanzibar best beaches to stay, Nungwi or Paje, Zanzibar east coast or north coast, best place to stay in Zanzibar for couples, Zanzibar resorts by area and where to base yourself in Zanzibar.
Quick answer
For most first-time visitors the best base is the north coast at Nungwi or Kendwa, because the sea is swimmable at any tide and the sunsets face the water. Choose the east coast, such as Paje, Jambiani or Matemwe, for wide beaches, kitesurfing and a quieter feel, and add two nights in Stone Town for history. Pick one coast for a stay of five nights or fewer, because crossing the island adds hours of transfers.
The airport lies close to Stone Town, 7 to 9 km and 10 to 20 minutes away, but the beaches lie 30 minutes to about 1 hour 35 minutes further, depending on the area. Your written quotation shows the exact transfer and the price.

Chapter 01: How do the tides change where you should stay?
Tides decide whether you can swim, and they are the first thing to understand. On the east coast the sea retreats 400 metres to 1 kilometre at low tide, which leaves a wide flat of sand and shallow pools where swimming is poor and walking is good. Swimming on the east coast works mainly at high tide, and the times shift each day.
The north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa is swimmable at any tide, according to local operators and travel guides. If you want to swim whenever you wish, the north is the safer choice. If you do not mind planning your swim around a tide table, the east is wide, quiet and very beautiful.
Ask your lodge for the tide table for your dates, and plan the day around it.
Chapter 02: Which coast suits your trip?
The north coast suits couples, first-time visitors and anyone who wants evening life. It has a choice of resorts and restaurants, and the west-facing beaches give sunsets over the water.
The east coast suits travellers who want space and sunrise. The beaches are long, the villages are close and many lodges are small. Kitesurfers, divers and travellers who like a quiet, local feel choose it.
Stone Town suits travellers who want culture, and it works best as a short stop of one to three nights, not as a beach base. Our Zanzibar beyond the beach guide covers what to do in the town and around the island.
Chapter 03: Is Stone Town a good place to stay?
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 2000, with narrow lanes, old merchant houses, markets and rooftop restaurants. It lies 7 to 9 km from the airport, 10 to 20 minutes by road, so it is the easiest first or last night.
It is a city, not a beach destination. Most visitors stay one to three nights, then move to a beach. If your flight lands late or leaves early, a night in Stone Town saves a long transfer.
Chapter 04: What are the best areas on the north coast?
Nungwi lies at the northern tip, about 65 km from the airport, with a transfer of 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30. The beaches are swimmable at any tide, and the sunsets face the water. It has the widest choice of resorts, bars and restaurants, so it is busier in the evenings.
Kendwa lies just south of Nungwi, about 68 km from the airport, with a transfer of 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 35. It has calm, swimmable water and faces the sunset. Many travellers split their stay between the two beaches, because they lie within a short ride of each other.
Chapter 05: What are the best areas on the east coast?
Matemwe lies on the north-east coast, about 55 km from the airport, with a transfer of 1 hour to 1 hour 15. It faces the Mnemba Atoll, which makes it a base for diving and snorkelling, and its lodges are small and secluded. Our diving and snorkelling guide covers the reefs.
Kiwengwa and Pongwe lie on the east coast, with transfers of 30 minutes to 1 hour 15 and about 45 minutes. Kiwengwa has larger resorts, and Pongwe has quieter small lodges.
Michamvi lies on the south-east peninsula, about 68 km away, with a transfer of 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30. It has a remote feel and views both at sunrise and sunset.
Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu lie further south. Paje is about 50 to 60 km from the airport, with a transfer of 1 hour to 1 hour 15, and it is the island's kitesurfing centre. Jambiani is 50 to 65 km away, with a similar transfer, and Bwejuu takes 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30. Both are quieter villages with small stays.
Chapter 06: What about the south and the quiet corners?
Makunduchi lies in the south-east, with a transfer of 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20. It has few visitors and a local feel. Kizimkazi lies on the south coast, about 60 km away, with a transfer of about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 15. It suits travellers who want a quiet stretch of coast.
Fumba lies about 35 minutes from the airport on the south-west coast. It suits travellers who want a short transfer and a quiet stay.
Chapter 07: Where should couples stay?
Couples usually choose Matemwe for privacy and diving, the north coast for sunsets and swimming at any tide, or Michamvi for a remote feel. Choose a small lodge, a private pool or a beachfront villa, and ask about the tide at your lodge, because a villa with a view of a retreating sea is a different experience at low tide.
For a honeymoon, the beach leg is in honeymoon safari and Zanzibar and the safari before it is in Tanzania honeymoon safari.
Chapter 08: Where should families stay?
Families usually choose the north coast, because children can swim at any tide, or a larger east-coast resort in Kiwengwa with a pool and a kids' club. The east coast works well at high tide, and children enjoy the pools and sandbanks at low tide, so long as a lodge supervises the shallows.

Chapter 09: Where should divers and kitesurfers stay?
Divers choose Matemwe or Nungwi for the Mnemba Atoll, where diving is best from October to March. A separate marine-area fee applies at Mnemba, and your quotation lists it. See our diving and snorkelling guide.
Kitesurfers choose Paje. The Kaskazi wind blows from mid-December to March, and the Kuzi wind blows from May to October, so Paje works in most of the year.
Chapter 10: How do the seasons change the choice?
The long rains, called the Masika, run from mid-March to May, and the short rains, called the Vuli, come in November. Some lodges close in the long rains, and Mnemba Island closes from 8 April to 20 May. The dry months from June to October and from December to March suit the beach best. Our best time for Zanzibar guide explains each month.
Chapter 11: How long should you stay, and in how many places?
For 3 to 5 nights, stay in one place. For 7 nights, choose one coast and one lodge, or split the stay between two nearby areas, such as Nungwi and Kendwa or Paje and Jambiani. For 10 nights or more, combine a coast with two nights in Stone Town.
Moving across the island costs about 1 to 2 hours each time, so a split stay is only worth it when the two places feel very different. Our Zanzibar tours show how we link them.
Chapter 12: How do you travel to Zanzibar and what do transfers cost?
Flights from the mainland and the visa are covered in adding Zanzibar to your safari. Private airport transfers cost roughly USD 40 to 65 per car as a market range, depending on the distance, and your written quotation shows the exact price.
Tanzania's mandatory insurance applies on Zanzibar as well, and a separate Zanzibar scheme, ZIC, has applied since 1 October 2024. Our Tanzania travel insurance guide explains how they work.
Chapter 13: What rules and customs apply?
Zanzibar is a conservative, mostly Muslim society. Dress modestly in Stone Town and in villages, and keep swimwear for the beach and the hotel. The UK government warns that offences against dress and conduct rules can bring fines of at least USD 700. Our guide to staying safe in Tanzania explains the current advice.
Chapter 14: What mistakes should you avoid?
Booking an east-coast lodge and expecting to swim at low tide, splitting a short stay across two coasts, forgetting the transfer time when you plan a late flight, booking a lodge that closes in the rains and skipping a night in Stone Town when your flight lands late.
Chapter 15: What is the verdict?
For most visitors the north coast is the easiest base, the east coast is the quiet choice and Stone Town is the best place to start or end. Choose one coast, check the tide table and keep the transfer in mind.
