A Tanzania family safari works best when the route is short on driving, long on animals and built around the ages of your children. Tanzania has the parks to do it: Tarangire for elephants, Lake Manyara for tree-climbing lions and flamingos, the Ngorongoro Crater for a day of constant sightings and the Serengeti for the wide plains. Below you will find the best routes for different ages, what the parks charge for children, which lodges take young guests, which activities have age limits, how to handle malaria and long drives, how to end on a beach and the errors to skip. People search for it as Tanzania family safari, family safari Tanzania, Tanzania safari with kids, Tanzania safari with children, Tanzania family holiday, family safari packages Tanzania, Serengeti with kids and kid-friendly safari Tanzania.

Quick answer

The best Tanzania family safari is 7 to 9 nights on a northern circuit route: Tarangire, Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti, with short drives, two nights minimum in each camp and a beach week on Zanzibar to finish. Families with children under 8 do best with fewer, shorter drives and a fly-in leg to the Serengeti. Families with teenagers can drive more and add walks and balloon flights.

Tanzania's national parks charge by age band: children under 5 enter free, children aged 5 to 15 pay a child rate and everyone aged 16 and over pays the adult rate. Lodges set their own age rules, from 2 and above at some large lodges to 6 and above at others, so check each camp before you book. Your written quotation shows the exact price and every child rate.

Chapter 01: What does a good Tanzania family route look like?

Three routes suit most families.

The gentle northern route takes 7 nights: Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater rim and a fly-out from the Serengeti or a drive back to Arusha. Every drive is under about four hours until the last leg, and our Tanzania safari itinerary length guide explains how the days stack up.

The fly-in route cuts the road. You drive to Tarangire, fly to the Serengeti and stay there four nights with one camp change. It suits families with children under 8, because the long Arusha to Serengeti drive disappears. Our Arusha to Serengeti guide covers the road and the flights.

The safari and beach route adds 3 to 5 nights on Zanzibar, which gives children a rest from vehicles and gives parents the quiet days they need. For the flight and the visa, see adding Zanzibar to your safari.

Chapter 02: What do the parks charge for children?

The national parks use three age bands, which TANAPA, the national parks authority, sets for its fees: children under 5 enter free, children aged 5 to 15 pay the child rate and visitors aged 16 and over pay the adult rate.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority lists its crater-area entry at USD 70.80 for an adult and USD 23.60 for a child, with children under 5 free, and a crater service fee of USD 295 per vehicle that covers everyone in the vehicle. The service fee is per vehicle, not per person, so a family of four in one vehicle pays it once.

TANAPA's published child rates are lower than the adult rates at every park. Because the authority revises its schedule, your written quotation shows the exact figures for your dates, and our Tanzania safari cost guide explains each line.

Chapter 03: How old should children be for a Tanzania safari?

There is no national minimum age for a game drive in the parks. The limits come from lodges and activities, and our best age for a family safari guide covers the general question across East Africa.

For Tanzania, the practical points are these. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti accepts guests aged 2 and above and runs a children's programme for ages 2 to 17. Sanctuary Kichakani in the Serengeti accepts guests aged 6 and above. Many small tented camps set their own minimum age, so ask before you book.

Children from about 5 manage two short game drives a day. Children under 5 tire quickly in a vehicle, so plan one drive and a long lodge rest, and ask for a private vehicle so you can stop when you need to.

Chapter 04: Which parks work best for children?

Tarangire is the best first park. The elephant herds are large, the baobab trees are memorable and Arusha is about 121 km away, roughly two hours by road. Our Tarangire guide has the detail.

Lake Manyara is the shortest drive from Arusha, about 125 km and two to two and a half hours. It has flamingos, hippos, baboons and the tree-climbing lions that give the park its reputation, and it has a canopy walkway for children aged 5 and over. See our Lake Manyara guide.

The Ngorongoro Crater gives the highest density of animals in one day. The descent runs roughly from 06:00 to 16:00, and vehicles must be out of the crater floor by 18:00, which makes a full day too long for very young children, so plan a morning descent and a long lunch. Our Ngorongoro Crater guide explains the timings.

The Serengeti rewards children who can manage drives of several hours. Read our Serengeti guide to choose the right region for your month.

Chapter 05: Which lodges and camps take children?

These are places families choose, and the details come from their official pages.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti accepts guests aged 2 and above and offers a children's programme for ages 2 to 17. Its watering-hole view in the central Serengeti lets children watch animals from the lodge.

Sanctuary Kichakani accepts guests aged 6 and above. Many private camps and the Singita lodges publish their own age rules, and rules differ between camps in the same group.

Larger lodges usually have family rooms or adjoining rooms, which suit a family group better than a single small tent. Our family-friendly safari camps guide lists what to look for, and our Tanzania safari lodges guide covers the lodges in more detail. We match the camp to your children's ages, not just your budget.

Chapter 06: Which activities have age limits?

Several activities set minimum ages, and operators apply them strictly.

Balloon flights over the Serengeti set a minimum age of 6 at Serengeti Balloon Safaris, and Four Seasons lists 7 for its own balloon flights. Prices and inclusions are in our hot air balloon safari cost page.

Night drives are allowed in the national parks only at Tarangire and Lake Manyara, and operators set their own age limits. TANAPA lists the night-drive fee at USD 50 for an adult and USD 25 for a child, excluding VAT. Our night drives and walking safaris guide covers what is allowed where.

Walking safaris set their own limits. Singita Grumeti, for example, walks from age 16. The canopy walkway at Lake Manyara takes children aged 5 and over. In Arusha National Park, children under 10 may not climb above 3,700 metres, which matters if you plan a Mount Meru day.

Chapter 07: How do you handle malaria and health with children?

Tanzania is a malaria area, and the right plan depends on each child's age and weight, so see a doctor or travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before you travel. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that doxycycline is not given to children under 8, which means younger children need a different medicine. Our malaria and yellow fever guide explains the vaccinations and the yellow fever certificate rules.

Beyond medicines, use repellent on children, cover arms and legs at dusk, and sleep under a net. Bring sun hats, high-factor sunscreen and a basic first-aid kit with oral rehydration salts.

Children need the government's inbound policy too, at a child rate, and the details are in our Tanzania travel insurance guide.

Chapter 08: How do you keep long drives manageable?

Road time is the main complaint on a family safari, and planning removes most of it.

Choose a route whose daily drives stay under four hours, and fly the longest leg. Ask for a private vehicle with a pop-up roof so children can stand and see, and a guide who stops for photographs and breaks. The trade-offs are set out in fly-in vs road safari.

Pack a daypack for each child with snacks, water, a book, a notebook for animal sightings and binoculars sized for small hands. Pace the day around the animals' habits: most activity happens in the early morning and late afternoon, and the middle of the day is for rest.

Chapter 09: What is the best time for a Tanzania family safari?

June to October brings dry weather, short grass and animals at the waterholes, and it is also the busiest season.

The calving season from January to March in the southern and central Serengeti and Ndutu region gives newborn animals and predators close by, which children enjoy. The long rains run from mid-March to May, when roads are slow and many camps close or cut prices. Our best time to visit Tanzania guide explains each month.

If your children can only travel in school holidays, book 9 to 12 months ahead so that the camps with family rooms are available.

Chapter 10: How do you end a family safari on Zanzibar?

Zanzibar suits families because children can swim, build sandcastles and rest. The island has two different coasts, and the choice matters. On the east coast the sea retreats a long way at low tide, so swimming works mainly at high tide. The north coast, around Nungwi and Kendwa, is swimmable at most tides. Our where to stay in Zanzibar guide compares the areas.

Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the transfer from the airport to most beach areas. Stone Town is 10 to 20 minutes away. Choose a lodge with a shaded pool and a kids' club if the children are young.

Chapter 11: What documents and rules apply to families?

Every traveller, including each child, needs a passport valid for six months and the correct visa. The application steps are in our Tanzania visa guide. If a child travels with one parent or with other adults, ask your airline and our team which papers they want to see, and carry each child's birth certificate.

Tanzania requires an online health form on arrival, and our guide to staying safe in Tanzania explains the current advice. Our arrival guide for Kilimanjaro Airport explains what to expect when you land.

Chapter 12: What should you pack for children?

Pack neutral clothes in khaki, green and brown, long sleeves and trousers for evenings, a warm layer for early drives and a sun hat. Bring child-sized binoculars, a refillable water bottle, wet wipes and any medicine your children need, in the original packaging. Our East Africa safari packing list has the full list, and our luggage weight limits guide explains the baggage rules on light aircraft, which limit you to soft bags.

Chapter 13: What mistakes should you avoid?

Booking too many parks in too few days, choosing a camp without checking its age rule, planning a full-day crater visit for a toddler, forgetting that the light aircraft baggage limit applies to children's bags too, skipping the malaria consultation, planning a balloon flight for a child under the minimum age and arriving on Zanzibar on a tight connection.

Chapter 14: What is the verdict?

For most families the best Tanzania safari is 7 to 9 nights across Tarangire, Manyara or Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, with short drives, a fly-in leg for young children and a beach week to finish. Choose camps that welcome your children's ages, ask about the age limits on every activity and book early for school holidays.
