Kilimanjaro Airport, code JRO, is the main gateway for northern Tanzania safaris, and a smooth arrival comes down to knowing three things: how long immigration takes, how to reach Arusha or Moshi and what to do with a connecting flight. The terminal is small, it works around the clock, and the road to Arusha is easy once you have a driver. This guide explains the arrival step by step: the airlines that fly in, immigration and visas, money and SIM cards, transfers to Arusha and Moshi with distances and times, what a transfer costs as a market range, connecting flights to the Serengeti and Dar es Salaam, and the mistakes that cost travellers an evening. People search for it as Kilimanjaro Airport, Kilimanjaro International Airport, JRO airport, Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha, Kilimanjaro Airport transfer, JRO to Moshi, arriving at Kilimanjaro Airport and Kilimanjaro Airport arrival guide.

Chapter 01: Which airlines fly to Kilimanjaro Airport?
Schedules change by season, so check your airline before you book. According to a 2026 flight guide, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways and Kenya Airways fly daily. KLM flies daily except Thursday and Sunday, and Turkish Airlines flies daily except Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Air France flies on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, and Edelweiss flies seasonally on Tuesday and Saturday.
Domestic flights link Kilimanjaro to Dar es Salaam in about 1 hour 15 minutes, on Air Tanzania and Precision Air. Light-aircraft flights to the Serengeti leave from Kilimanjaro and Arusha. Many safari travellers land in the evening and begin the safari the next day, so book a hotel for the first night. Our Tanzania safari itinerary length guide explains how arrival days fit into the plan.
Chapter 02: What happens at immigration?
Join the immigration queue with your passport, your visa or your e-visa approval, and your yellow fever certificate if you arrive from a risk country. Queues run 20 to 45 minutes, depending on how many flights have landed together.
Tanzania requires an online health form before arrival, so complete it before you fly and keep the confirmation on your phone. Our guide to staying safe in Tanzania explains the current health advice. The application steps are in Tanzania visa and e-visa, and our yellow fever certificate guide explains who needs a certificate.
Tanzania's mandatory inbound travel insurance has applied since 1 October 2026, so carry the policy document. Our Tanzania travel insurance guide explains who must buy it.
Chapter 03: How do you collect your bags and clear customs?
Collect your bags from the carousel, and keep your baggage tags until you leave the terminal. If you fly on to the Serengeti by light aircraft, the baggage limit is 15 kg in a soft bag on Coastal Aviation, so move your safari kit into a soft bag and leave the rest at your hotel. Our luggage weight limits guide explains the rule.
Chapter 04: What can you do inside the terminal?
The terminal operates 24 hours a day. It has ATMs, currency exchange counters and SIM card counters for Vodacom, Airtel and Halo, which sell SIMs for about USD 5 to 10. Free Wi-Fi is available but patchy, so download maps and your booking documents before you land.
Bring some US dollars for tips, and use the ATM for shillings. Our safari tipping guide explains how much to carry.
Chapter 05: How far is Kilimanjaro Airport from Arusha and Moshi?
Moshi lies 40 to 42 km from the airport, and the drive takes 45 to 60 minutes. Arusha lies 46 to 55 km away, and the drive takes 50 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic and the part of town you stay in.
Arusha Airport, called ARK, lies 8 km west of central Arusha, and it takes about an hour to reach by road from Kilimanjaro. Light aircraft to the Serengeti leave from ARK, so if your flight leaves early, sleep close to it. The road and the flights are covered in Arusha to Serengeti.
Chapter 06: How do you get from the airport to Arusha?
A pre-booked private driver is the easiest option. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a sign, loads your bags and takes you to your hotel. Pre-booked transfers to Arusha cost roughly USD 45 to 75 as a market range.
A shared shuttle costs roughly USD 10 to 20 per person, and it runs to a schedule that suits a group of arrivals. Taxis on arrival quote widely different prices, so agree the price before you get in. To see how transfers appear inside a quotation, read how to book a Tanzania safari.
Chapter 07: How do you get from the airport to Moshi?
Moshi is closer, at 40 to 42 km and 45 to 60 minutes by road. Travellers who plan to climb Mount Kilimanjaro often sleep in Moshi on the first night. Our Mount Kilimanjaro guide covers the climb, and our Kilimanjaro and safari combination guide explains how to join the two.
Chapter 08: Can you connect to a flight to the Serengeti?
Light-aircraft flights to the Serengeti leave from Kilimanjaro and Arusha. Coastal Aviation's timetable, valid to 31 May 2027, lists flights from Kilimanjaro at 11:15 and 15:45. Flightlink lists flights from Seronera to Kilimanjaro between 08:30 and 09:30.
If you land on an international flight and want to connect, leave several hours between the two. A delayed arrival and a long immigration queue can miss a tight connection, and light aircraft do not wait. Where the first flight is late, sleep in Arusha and fly the next morning.
Chapter 09: How much time should you allow?
Allow two hours between landing and leaving the terminal, which covers immigration, baggage and the walk to your driver. For a departure, arrive at least three hours before an international flight.
If you start a 3-day safari, arrive the evening before. Our 3 days Tanzania safari guide explains why.
Chapter 10: What should you prepare before you land?
Complete the online health form, save your visa approval, print or save your insurance document, download offline maps and confirm your driver's name and phone number. Carry a printed copy of your hotel booking for the first night.
Chapter 11: What mistakes should you avoid?
Scheduling a connection with less than three hours, accepting an unmarked taxi without agreeing the price, forgetting the health form, packing a hard suitcase for a light-aircraft flight, booking a first night far from Arusha Airport before an early flight and skipping the insurance document.
Chapter 12: What is the verdict?
Kilimanjaro Airport is easy to use if you prepare. Book your transfer before you fly, allow two hours after landing, carry your documents and sleep in Arusha or Moshi on the first night.
