Twelve rooms built into a granite kopje in the far north of the Serengeti, close to the Kenyan border and a short drive from the Mara River, with guided walks and game drives included.
The short answerLamai Serengeti is a luxury camp in the far north of Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, just south of the Kenyan border. It sits on a granite kopje with views over the Mara River Valley and has 12 rooms across a main camp and a private camp. Rates are full board with activities, including game drives and guided walks. The migration usually reaches the river from July to October. The camp is open from June to March.
Lamai Serengeti is built on Kogakuria Kopje, a granite outcrop in the far north of Serengeti National Park, just south of the Kenyan border. From the camp you look over the Mara River Valley and the Lamai Wedge, and the river itself is a short drive away.
Most guests fly into Kogatende airstrip and drive about 45 minutes to camp. The camp suggests three to four nights. This is the area where the herds usually cross the Mara River, so it pairs well with the Great Migration and with our Tanzania itineraries.
There are 12 rooms in two camps. The main camp has 10, including two family rooms with two bedrooms sharing a bathroom. The private camp has two rooms, one of them a family room, and is for exclusive use by up to six guests. A separate self-contained house suits groups of up to ten.
Each room has a king-size bed under a net, a writing desk, a day bed, an en-suite bathroom with a shower, and a wrap-around deck. The front wall is mosquito gauze. There is no air conditioning and no satellite TV. The camp has a pool, a lounge, a bar, a library and an open dining room, and runs on 24-hour power from solar and a generator.

Game drives run in open-topped 4x4 vehicles with resident guides, and guided walking safaris are included in the rate. The camp says walks are often best from August to October. Birdwatching is also listed. An optional hot-air balloon safari takes about three hours, with roughly one hour in the air.
The wildlife is not only about the migration: leopard, lion and elephant are listed as resident through the year. For timing, see the northern Serengeti and Kogatende guide.
