Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon are the green, cool, quiet side of eastern Uganda: three stepped waterfalls above the coffee terraces of Kapchorwa District, and behind them an enormous extinct volcano whose summit, Wagagai, is 4,321 metres high. People also search for this area as Mount Elgon National Park, Mt Elgon Uganda, Mount Masaba, Sipi Falls Kapchorwa or "the Sipi waterfalls". This guide answers the questions travellers really ask: where it is, how high the falls are, how long the Mount Elgon hike takes, which trail to choose, what the Bagisu Imbalu ceremony is, when to go, how to get there from Kampala and how to fit it into a Uganda trip without repeating the usual safari circuit.

Quick answer

Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls on the Sipi River, on the north-western slopes of Mount Elgon in Kapchorwa District, eastern Uganda. The falls are about 95, 85 and 74 metres high. Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano on the Uganda-Kenya border; its highest point, Wagagai, is 4,321 metres and lies entirely in Uganda. The Ugandan side of the mountain is protected as Mount Elgon National Park, which covers roughly 1,100 square kilometres.

Sipi suits travellers who want waterfalls, walking and Arabica coffee country in cool air. Mount Elgon suits hikers who want a non-technical high-altitude walk with caldera views and none of the crowds of better-known mountains. Plan one to two nights for Sipi and at least three days for a hike to Wagagai.

Chapter 01 — Where are Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon?

Where is Sipi Falls? Sipi Falls is in Kapchorwa District in eastern Uganda, on the north-western slopes of Mount Elgon, close to the Kenyan border. The usual base is the small trading village of Sipi, reached by road from Mbale, the largest city in the region. Mbale itself had a population of 290,414 in Uganda's 2024 census, and Kapchorwa District had 54,520, which tells you how quiet the highlands above the city are.

Where is Mount Elgon? Mount Elgon straddles the border between Uganda and Kenya. The Uganda side, Mount Elgon National Park, is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and includes the true summit. Because Wagagai is in Uganda, you can stand on the highest point of the mountain without crossing a border.

Sipi and Elgon are the same landscape. The Sipi River is one of the streams that drains the mountain, which is why the waterfalls are on the lower slopes and the hiking trails climb behind them. Most travellers see the falls first and decide there whether they have time for the mountain.

Chapter 02 — What is Mount Elgon?

Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano, a broad, gently sloping mountain built from layers of lava rather than the steep cone people imagine when they hear "volcano". Its base is enormous: sources give the diameter variously, with some reference works giving about 80 km across and the Uganda Wildlife Authority describing a base of about 4,000 square kilometres. Treat the numbers as signs of scale rather than as a precise survey.

At the top is a caldera, the collapsed crater of the old volcano. The Uganda Wildlife Authority describes it as about 8 km across in its brochure and gives the area as 40 km² on its website, so you will see both. The highest point on the caldera rim is Wagagai, at 4,321 metres.

Is Mount Elgon in Uganda or Kenya? Both. The mountain crosses the border, but Wagagai, the summit, is entirely in Uganda. The Ugandan side is protected as Mount Elgon National Park, and Kenya has its own Mount Elgon National Park on the eastern side.

The Bagisu, who live on the southern and western slopes, call the mountain Masaba, so you will also see it written as Mount Masaba. The park was created in the early 1990s, although sources differ on the exact year.

Chapter 03 — How high are Sipi Falls? The three falls explained

How high is Sipi Falls? The three Sipi waterfalls are about 95, 85 and 74 metres high, which is why they are described as a stepped series rather than a single drop. Those three figures are the ones in common use today. The first and highest fall is the one you see in most photographs.

The falls are usually visited in a loop on foot, with a local guide, going from the top fall down to the lowest, or the other way round. The walk takes in the three drops from different angles, passes through coffee farms and banana plots, and crosses the river in places. Because the route follows community paths and farm tracks, a guide is not just a convenience: he or she knows the paths, which family land you are crossing and when the footing is safe.

The best light on the falls is usually in the morning, and the waterfalls are fullest after rain. In the driest months the flow is thinner, so the view is gentler but the paths are firmer. Either way, the falls are worth the effort.

Chapter 04 — Things to do at Sipi Falls

Sipi is a walking and viewing destination. These are the activities travellers usually build their stay around:

  • The three-falls walk. The classic half-day loop, led by a local guide, with a river crossing or two and long views over the plains below.
  • A coffee tour. Arabica is grown on these slopes. Local farmers show the whole process, from picking to hand roasting, and you drink the coffee at the end.
  • Abseiling beside the falls. Local operators offer abseiling down the cliff beside the main fall. Standards vary between operators, so we book only providers we trust and check the safety equipment before anyone clips in.
  • Birdwatching. The cliffs and farms attract a good mix of highland and forest-edge birds, and early morning walks are best.
  • Village and farm visits. Short visits to Sebei and Bagisu homesteads give context on farming, food and local life.
  • Viewpoints. Several lodges sit on the cliff edge with a terrace that looks straight at the falls, which is a pleasure in the late afternoon after a day of travel.

Do not try to cram all of these into one afternoon. A first-time visit works best with one full day on foot and an evening on a terrace.

Chapter 05 — How long does it take to hike Mount Elgon?

How long does it take to hike Mount Elgon? The Uganda Wildlife Authority gives three days as the minimum hiking time. Most travellers who want to reach Wagagai and enjoy the caldera plan three to five days, because the extra time helps with altitude and gives the weather more chances to clear. One local operator suggests five to six days, so the figure you see depends on the route and the pace.

Mount Elgon is a trek, not a technical climb. You do not need ropes or specialist mountaineering skills, but you do need a good level of fitness, solid walking boots, warm clothes and a head for altitude. You should be comfortable walking for several hours a day on uneven ground.

Is Mount Elgon hard? It is demanding mostly because of altitude, length and weather rather than technical difficulty. The summit is above 4,000 metres, so mild altitude symptoms are possible for anyone, and a slower ascent is the best protection. Ask your own doctor for advice on altitude before you go, especially if you have a heart or lung condition.

Chapter 06 — Which Mount Elgon trail should you choose?

The park has several trails, and the one you choose shapes the whole trip. These are the ones used most often.

Trail Starting point Character
Sasa Trail Budadiri, at about 1,250 m, on the southern side The most direct route up the mountain, allowing a summit and return in about 3 to 4 days. It starts low, so the climb is steeper and the altitude gain larger.
Sipi Trail Kapkwai, at about 2,050 m Starts much higher, so the route is longer and gentler, and the climb is spread over more distance.
Piswa Trail Northern side One of the northern routes, suited to travellers with more days to spend.
Suam Trail Northern side, towards the Kenya border Another northern route, towards the Kenya border, for longer treks.

Which trail is best? For most hikers the choice is between Sasa and Sipi. Sasa is the shorter and more demanding route, which suits fit walkers with limited time. The Sipi trail starts higher up and is gentler, which suits anyone who wants to go slowly. The northern trails reward people with more days to spend.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority sets the park charges and guide rules, and these change by tariff period, so we price the hike on your written quotation using the tariff in force on your dates.

Chapter 07 — What is Wagagai and what will you see?

Wagagai, at 4,321 metres, is the highest point of Mount Elgon and lies on the rim of the caldera. It is the highest point of the mountain on either side of the border, and it is wholly in Uganda.

On the way up you pass through zones of vegetation that change with altitude: farmland at the bottom, montane forest with bamboo, then heath and moorland with giant lobelias and groundsel, and finally the open caldera. The landscape is closer to moorland than to a jungle at the top, and the weather can turn quickly, with cold mornings, mist and rain.

Plan for the caldera floor and its views as the reward. The size of the volcano is only clear once you are on the rim.

Chapter 08 — Wildlife and birding on Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is better known for scenery than for big game, and it is worth setting expectations before you go. This is a walking and birding destination rather than a game-drive destination.

Is there an elephant cave on Mount Elgon? The famous cave where elephants enter to mine salt, Kitum Cave, is on the Kenyan side of the mountain. Do not plan a Ugandan trip around it. On the Uganda side, the draw is the forest, the high moorland and the birds.

For birdwatchers the highlights include the lammergeier, the Tacazze sunbird and Jackson's francolin (also called Jackson's spurfowl). Published bird totals for the mountain vary widely, from about 144 species to more than 300, depending on the source and the survey, so we treat them as an indication of a rich bird list rather than a fixed number. Forest birds are easiest on the lower trails in the early morning, and higher-altitude specialities need time on the upper slopes.

For a wider birding plan across Uganda, see our East Africa birding safari guide.

Chapter 09 — Bugisu Arabica and the coffee of Sipi

The slopes of Mount Elgon are one of Uganda's best-known Arabica regions. The beans are grown by smallholders at altitude, with the Sipi area typically sitting at about 1,600 to 1,900 metres, and sold as Bugisu Arabica. A coffee tour at Sipi lets you follow the beans from tree to cup and buy roasted coffee from the farmers who grew it.

Buying coffee directly is one of the simplest ways to support the local economy, and it makes an easy gift. For the wider question of travelling responsibly, read our responsible and sustainable safari travel guide.

Chapter 10 — Imbalu and the Bagisu: what visitors should know

What is Imbalu? Imbalu is the traditional circumcision ceremony of the Bagisu, the people of the southern and western slopes of Mount Elgon. It is held in even-numbered years, mainly in August, and it is a central rite of passage for young men and a major cultural event for the whole community. The next Imbalu season is 2028.

Some visitors want to attend, and some tour descriptions treat it as a spectacle. We treat it as what it is: a serious community and family ceremony. Access depends on invitation and respect for local custom, so we do not promise attendance on any itinerary, and we ask guests not to photograph participants or ceremonies without clear permission from the family and elders involved.

Visitors who time a trip to the Bagisu highlands in an Imbalu year should expect busier roads and accommodation in August and plan well ahead.

Chapter 11 — How to get to Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon

How far is Sipi Falls from Kampala? Mbale is about 225 to 235 km from Kampala by road, and Sipi is a further drive of about 50 km from Mbale according to a local operator. Allow most of a day, because the road passes through busy towns and the climb to Sipi is slow.

Route Distance Notes
Kampala to Mbale About 225 to 235 km The gateway city for the whole region
Mbale to Sipi Falls About 50 km Climbing road up the mountain
Mbale to Kapchorwa About 65 km The main town of the upper slopes
Mount Elgon to Kidepo Valley About 420 km The Uganda Wildlife Authority brochure figure

Mbale is on the road east of Jinja, so Sipi fits naturally into a trip that includes the Nile. Our Jinja travel guide and Nile rafting guide cover that end of the journey.

Most travellers go by private vehicle with a driver-guide. We arrange the whole transfer and plan the drive so you arrive with daylight left.

Chapter 12 — Where to stay near Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon

There are three kinds of place to stay.

  • Cliff-edge lodges at Sipi. The most popular choice, with terraces looking at the falls and the plains below. Bring a warm layer: it is cooler than the lowlands.
  • Simple guesthouses and campsites at Sipi. Good for hikers on a tighter budget who want to start early.
  • Hotels in Mbale. Practical for a late arrival or an early start, but you lose the setting.

Which place is right depends on your group, your budget and how much you plan to walk, so we choose and name it on your written quotation.

Chapter 13 — Best time to visit Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon

The Uganda Wildlife Authority brochure gives the drier seasons as June to August and December to March. These are the best months for hiking because the trails are firmer and the views clearer.

  • June to August and December to March: drier trails, clearer skies and the easier hiking window.
  • The wetter months: the waterfalls are at their fullest and the hills are greenest, but trails are slippery and cloud often covers the summit.
  • Imbalu years (2028 next): busier in August.

At altitude the weather can change within an hour in any month, so pack for rain and cold on the mountain even in the dry seasons. For Uganda-wide timing, see our best time to visit Uganda guide, and for what to bring, see the safari packing list.

Chapter 14 — What does a Sipi and Elgon trip cost?

We do not publish a single price, because the hike and the lodge choice vary so widely and park charges are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for each tariff period. These are the items that decide the cost:

Cost item What decides it
Accommodation Cliff-edge lodge, guesthouse or camping, and the number of nights
Park entry and hiking charges Set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and priced on your quote using the tariff for your dates
Guides and rangers Length of the trail and group size
Porters and equipment Optional, depending on the trail and your own kit
Transfers Private vehicle from Kampala or Jinja, plus any drive between trailheads
Activities at Sipi Falls walk, coffee tour and abseiling are priced by the provider
Meals Included at the lodge or arranged on the trail

Everything is itemised on your written quotation. For what a whole Uganda trip costs, see our Uganda safari cost guide.

Chapter 15 — Mount Elgon compared with Rwenzori and Kilimanjaro

Is Mount Elgon easier than Kilimanjaro? In technical terms all three are walks rather than climbs, but they differ in height, crowds and style.

Mountain Highest point Character
Mount Elgon Wagagai, 4,321 m Broad volcano and caldera, quiet trails, no technical climbing
Rwenzori Mountains Margherita Peak, 5,109 m Steep, wet, glaciated range with technical sections near the top
Mount Kilimanjaro Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m The highest mountain in Africa, with an established trekking infrastructure

Elgon is the right mountain for travellers who want a quiet high-altitude walk without the commitment of the Rwenzori or Kilimanjaro. For the other two, read our Rwenzori Mountains guide and Mount Kilimanjaro guide.

Chapter 16 — How Sipi and Elgon fit into a Uganda itinerary

Eastern Uganda is the part of the country most safari itineraries skip, which is its appeal. It fits best in three ways:

  • Add it to a Jinja trip. Nile rafting or a Nile cruise, then on to Mbale and Sipi for two nights of waterfalls and coffee.
  • Pair it with Kidepo Valley. Elgon and Kidepo are the two ends of Uganda's far east and north-east. The journey between them is long, so we build it as a deliberate loop rather than a rushed transfer. See our Kidepo Valley National Park guide.
  • Make it a hiking trip. Three to five days on the mountain, with a night at Sipi before or after.

For the usual gorilla and wildlife circuit that most travellers choose first, see our Uganda national parks guide and Uganda safari packages.

Chapter 17 — Mistakes to avoid and local tips

  1. Treating Elgon as a day trip. Sipi is worth a night, and the mountain needs at least three days.
  2. Underestimating altitude. The summit is above 4,000 metres, so walk slowly and speak to a doctor first.
  3. Expecting game drives. Elgon is for scenery, walking and birds.
  4. Going without a local guide at the falls. The paths cross farmland and the footing is not always obvious.
  5. Packing for the plains. It is cool at Sipi and cold on the mountain. Bring layers and rain gear.
  6. Looking for the elephant cave on the Uganda side. Kitum Cave is in Kenya.
  7. Treating Imbalu as a show. It is a family ceremony, so respect local custom.
  8. Booking abseiling on price alone. Check the equipment and the operator.
  9. Trusting one source for the numbers. Heights, areas and bird counts differ between sources, so use them as a guide.

Our verdict

Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon are the best reason to travel east in Uganda. They are cool, green and unhurried, with real hiking, real coffee farms and a local culture that is still the main event. Give Sipi two nights, give the mountain at least three days, and do not rush either.
