A Rwanda and Tanzania safari pairs one mountain gorilla trek near Musanze with the Serengeti plains, and the route turns on a single flight. RwandAir flies from Kigali to Kilimanjaro on only three days a week, according to published schedules. Your permit date, that flight and the way you reach the Serengeti decide everything else. This guide sets out the calendar arithmetic, the air and road options, Tanzania's entry rules and a split of nine to twelve days, checked 11 October 2026.

A young mountain gorilla. On this route the trek comes first and fixes every date that follows.
USD 1,500Rwanda gorilla permit, foreign visitors

About 1 h 45Flying time, Kigali to Kilimanjaro
USD 44Tanzania inbound insurance per adult, from 1 October 2026
The short answer
A Rwanda and Tanzania safari works well when you trek gorillas once near Musanze, then take RwandAir from Kigali to Kilimanjaro. Published schedules show it on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays only. Reach the Serengeti by light aircraft, or by road through Karatu and Ngorongoro. You need a Tanzania eVisa and, since 1 October 2026, the government's inbound insurance. Nine to twelve days is a sound range, with three Serengeti nights at the least.
Why a Rwanda and Tanzania safari works as one route
The two countries give you encounters that do not repeat each other. Rwanda offers the mountain gorilla in volcano forest, about 105 km and 2 to 3 hours by road from Kigali airport. Tanzania offers the open plains of the Serengeti, where the central area holds resident wildlife all year and the herds move with the rains. Tanzania has no gorillas, which is why a Tanzania and Rwanda safari is a natural pairing rather than a repeat.
On paper the route is unusually clean. There is one gorilla country, one wildlife country and one international flight between them. A Rwanda Tanzania safari therefore has fewer moving parts than the circuits in our East Africa multi-country safari hub. However, it lacks flexibility. The flight does not run daily, and the Serengeti sits a long way from the airport that serves it.
The route also answers a practical problem. From Kigali the gorilla area is a short drive. Entebbe to Bwindi in Uganda is 8 to 10 hours by road, or about 1 hour 15 minutes by light aircraft. A short first leg lets a Rwanda and Tanzania trip fit into nine days. Our Uganda vs Rwanda comparison weighs the two gorilla countries.
One gorilla trek on a Rwanda and Tanzania safari: permit and Kigali start
On this route one gorilla trek is the right amount. It delivers the full encounter, and it protects the nights you need in the Serengeti. A second trek is possible, but it needs a second permit, date and night, because one permit covers one person, one trek and one date. Whether gorillas belong first or last in a longer trip is argued in our guide to gorillas first or last. Here the Kigali arrival and the flight timing make the choice for you.
Group and time. Groups are limited to 8 people, with one hour spent with the family.
Briefing. You report at Kinigi at about 7:00.
Refunds. None for late arrival or your own cancellation. You get 75% back if you track all day with no contact, and a retry or full refund if the family moves away.
Peak dates sell out months ahead, so we secure the permit before any flight. See booking gorilla permits for the timing. The permit also comes first because its weekday decides whether the RwandAir flight fits.
Arrival day and the road to Kinigi
Kigali airport to Musanze takes about 2 to 3 hours by road. The briefing is at about 7:00, so we place you in a lodge near the park the night before, which needs a flight that lands by early afternoon. A late arrival is better handled with a Kigali hotel than with a pre-dawn drive. Two lodges show the geography without being a booking list: Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel in Musanze, 10 to 15 minutes from the park headquarters in one source, and Amakoro Songa Lodge at Kinigi, about 10 minutes from the trailhead in another.
Tanzania first and gorillas last would need a return flight that the listings we saw do not show as nonstop. So we plan gorillas first and finish in Tanzania.
RwandAir fixed days: how one flight sets your calendar
In the schedules we found, no other airline links Kigali and Kilimanjaro directly, so this is RwandAir's service or an indirect routing. Aggregator listings show it as WB440, leaving Kigali at 11:55 and landing at Kilimanjaro at 14:40 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The clock gap is 2 hours 45 minutes. Tanzania is one hour ahead of Rwanda, so the flying time is about 1 hour 45. Those are the RwandAir fixed days, and they are the main constraint on any Rwanda and Tanzania safari.
One conflict we cannot resolve. RwandAir's own page names the flight WB442 and routes it through Dar es Salaam on the same three days, with no times. Aggregators show a nonstop. Read the booking engine for your date, and ask us to confirm in writing whether the flight stops.
Working out your start day on a Rwanda and Tanzania safari
The flight leaves late morning and the road from the park takes 2 to 3 hours. You cannot trek and fly on the same day. Our arithmetic gives two patterns, tied to the weekday you land.
Pattern
You land in Kigali
Trek day
RwandAir flight
What it gives
Compact
Monday, Wednesday or Friday
Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday
Wednesday, Friday or Sunday, the morning after the trek
Trek, drive to Kigali that afternoon, one Kigali night, no rest day
Relaxed
Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday
Monday, Wednesday or Friday
Wednesday, Friday or Sunday, two days after the trek
A second night at the park to rest, then the drive and a Kigali night
Confirm the flight days for your own dates.
Work through it in this order:
Choose the permit date and check what weekday it falls on.
Count forward to the next Wednesday, Friday or Sunday that leaves a Kigali night after the trek.
Ask for the RwandAir flight to be confirmed for that date, including whether it stops.
Only then book lodges, the Arusha night and the Serengeti flights.
Check the weekday before you pay for a permit. A permit that puts your flight on a Tuesday or a Thursday costs you a day. An extra Kigali night costs less than a missed connection.
If the flight does not suit your dates
The fallback for a Rwanda and Tanzania trip is Nairobi: Kenya Airways or RwandAir to Nairobi, then a direct flight of about 1 hour to Kilimanjaro. We found no same-day connection we could confirm, so plan an overnight. Our safari flight logistics guide covers the wider network.
Elephants with Kilimanjaro behind. The airport that serves Arusha takes its name from the mountain.
Serengeti by air or road: your options after landing at Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro airport is about 50 km, roughly an hour by road, from Arusha, and the central Serengeti lies a long way beyond. A Kigali to Arusha safari therefore comes down to one decision: fly the last stretch or drive it. The table uses Coastal Aviation's timetable, valid to 31 May 2027, whose times are estimates.

The 65 minute connection is our arithmetic. Confirm schedules for your dates.
By air from Kilimanjaro or Arusha
On a Kigali to Arusha safari the same-day connection looks attractive but is tight. After a 14:40 landing you have immigration, baggage and a bag transfer before 15:45. Unless your operator confirms it in writing, plan an Arusha night. It also gives a buffer, because cloud, wind or waterlogged strips delay bush flights more than light rain does.
Coastal's allowance, for example, is 15 kg per person including hand luggage, or 30 kg on an extra-large ticket. It recommends soft bags and accepts a hard case up to 76 x 48 x 29 cm. Our safari luggage weight limits guide compares the airlines. Our fly-in or road safari comparison covers the wider trade-off.
A direct flight from Kigali: treat with caution
Coastal's published timetable lists a Kigali to Serengeti service on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with a four-seat minimum. Reports conflict on the departure time, and the elapsed time is not stated. Another airline announced in June 2025 that it was phasing out its own Kigali service. We cannot see whether anything runs in 2026 or 2027, so treat it as an option to ask about, not a plan.
A tented camp in the Serengeti. Arriving by air saves roughly half a day of road.
The road route on a Rwanda and Tanzania safari: Karatu, Ngorongoro and the long way in
Driving on a Rwanda and Tanzania tour trades time for the crater. The road is slower than a flight. However, it is the only way to put Ngorongoro on the way to the Serengeti.
Day by day
After landing, drive about an hour to Arusha and sleep there. The next day goes to Karatu, which sources put at around 3 hours from Arusha, though distances vary. Karatu has coffee-farm lodges such as Gibb's Farm. The crater road opens its descent at 06:00, and the floor takes about six hours with a 4x4 and a driver-guide. From Karatu the crater is about 1.5 hours away, less from a rim lodge. Our Ngorongoro Crater guide and the comparison of a day trip and an overnight stay help you choose.
From the crater to central Serengeti is 85 km to Naabi Hill, 2 to 3 hours, then 60 km to Seronera, about another hour. Allow 3 to 4 hours plus game viewing. The crater and the Serengeti on one day work only with a 06:00 descent and a Seronera arrival around 16:30 to 17:00. That is our arithmetic, not a published rule.
What a long drive adds up to
Arusha to Seronera in one push is about 7 to 7.5 hours. One operator blog puts Kigali to the Serengeti by road at over 16 hours, though its figures disagree. We do not plan that journey. If you want the plains, fly. If you want the crater, drive from Karatu and keep three Serengeti nights.
The Ngorongoro rim. The crater adds a night but changes the character of the trip.
Getting out of the Serengeti again
Coastal lists Seronera to Arusha at 10:45 to 12:30 and 16:45 to 18:20. A direct 11:30 to 12:00 runs in July to September. Allow about an hour from Arusha to Kilimanjaro airport. The evening flights land around 18:20, so a same-night international departure is not realistic. Plan the morning flight, or add a night in Arusha. For lodge choices around the park, read the Serengeti National Park guide.
Tanzania eVisa and insurance for a Rwanda and Tanzania safari
A Rwanda and Tanzania trip means two entry systems, and the East Africa Tourist Visa does not bridge them. It covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only, so Tanzania is outside it. With only Rwanda on your route, there is nothing to share it across. At least one popular operator guide says otherwise; the Uganda immigration page, which issues the visa, does not. The decision is in our East Africa tourist visa guide.

The visas
Rwanda's pages say a visa can be issued online or on arrival; applying online first is the safer habit. For Tanzania, the eVisa is the route we recommend, and the embassy page we read is unclear on the US figure, so confirm yours. Keep a printed approval in hand luggage with the insurance certificate. We found no published word on how or where the insurance is checked, so carry both.
Tanzania's inbound insurance on this route
Regulations gazetted on 4 September 2026 as Government Notice No. 256 of 2026 made inbound insurance mandatory for foreign visitors to mainland Tanzania. A Ministry of Finance notice and the insurer NIC give 1 October 2026 as the start. The UK FCDO, updated 9 October, treats it as in force. Residents of East African Community and Southern African Development Community states are excluded; the test is residence, not only nationality.
A Tanzania and Rwanda safari is the simplest case the rule has. You enter mainland Tanzania once, by air at Kilimanjaro. You buy one policy for that first port of entry at NIC, before travel or on arrival. It covers up to 92 days with multiple entries, and one policy also covers Zanzibar if you add it. The Regulations list emergency medical treatment, evacuation, repatriation and loss of luggage.
Entry may be refused without a policy. We found no published penalties and no news of enforcement problems since 1 October, and nothing on whether it is checked at land borders. Private insurance does not substitute. Even so, we advise cancellation and high-limit evacuation cover; see travel insurance and medical evacuation. The full rules are in our guide to the Tanzanian insurance rule, and the UK FCDO entry page is the best live check.
Yellow fever, Ebola notices and health on a Rwanda and Tanzania trip
For a Rwanda Tanzania safari, the yellow fever test is the country you arrive from, not the one you started in. Carry your certificate and ask your doctor, because the lists can change and our sources differ in age.
Arriving in Rwanda. A Rwanda Biomedical Centre note of 22 May 2026 asks arrivals from listed countries for a certificate. The list includes Kenya and Uganda but not Tanzania. If you reach Kigali through Nairobi or Entebbe, ask about it.
Arriving in Tanzania from Rwanda. A Ministry of Health notice dated 31 July 2023 lists Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. It is three years old, so treat it as medium confidence. An older annex mentions vaccination on arrival at USD 50 with up to 10 days of monitoring, and possible refusal.
Uganda. Uganda dropped its own certificate rule on 2 October 2026, which changes nothing for Rwanda or Tanzania.
The certificate is valid for life from 10 days after the injection (WHO rule since 2016). The detail is in our yellow fever certificate guide, and the malaria side is in the vaccination guide.
On Ebola, the Bundibugyo outbreak is centred on the DR Congo (WHO, 8 October 2026: 8,728 confirmed cases to 6 October). The CDC table of 7 October reported no cases in Rwanda or Tanzania. Rwanda's health notices this year refuse entry to foreign nationals who were in the DR Congo in the previous 30 days. We could not confirm the current status. WHO advises against travel restrictions. Advisories differ by government and some lag, so read WHO, the CDC and UK FCDO before you fly. Our hub tracks the dated notices under health alerts.
How to split your days on a Rwanda and Tanzania safari
Nine days is the shortest shape for a Rwanda and Tanzania safari that does not feel rushed. Twelve gives room for a second Tanzanian park and a buffer. The table shows nights, because the nights are what you actually spend.

Why these numbers
Two nights near the volcanoes cover arrival and the trek. The Kigali night is the one that makes the RwandAir morning flight reachable. Three Serengeti nights is the working minimum. After the transfer or the crater, two nights leave about one clear game-drive day. So a tenth or eleventh day is best spent as a fourth Serengeti night, or as a rest night near the park after the trek. At twelve days a Rwanda and Tanzania tour can add a night outside Tarangire, about 2.5 hours from Arusha. It can also end with an Arusha buffer, so a delayed bush flight does not cost you the flight home. Our park guide covers that option. Longer circuits are covered in how many days a multi-country trip needs.
Pack one soft bag for the bush flights. The 15 kg limit includes hand luggage. Leave surplus clothing at your Kigali or Arusha hotel. Rwanda bans plastic carry bags under Law 17/2019 and we found no tourist exemption, so use a cloth or paper bag. Leave a drone at home unless permits are in hand. The packing list covers the rest.
RwandAir's checked allowance is in its fare rules, so check your ticket. Separately, Zanzibar can be added as a beach finish. Nonstop flights from Kilimanjaro take about 1 hour 20, as set out in adding Zanzibar to your safari.
Rain needs a caveat for any departure from now into early 2027. Meteo Rwanda expects a season comparable to 1997 and 2023, with Musanze and Gakenke in its second-highest rainfall tier. It expects the season to end around 6 December. Tanzania's weather authority expects above-normal to normal vuli rains over the north-eastern highlands, intensifying in November and running into January 2027. Consequently, expect mud on park roads and delays on bush strips, which is one more reason to keep a buffer night in Arusha.
Wildebeest and zebra. Herd timing varies by weeks, so we never promise a crossing.
Who a Rwanda and Tanzania safari suits, and the mistakes to avoid
A Rwanda and Tanzania safari suits guests who want gorillas and the Serengeti in under two weeks. There is one border to clear and one wildlife country to enjoy properly. Couples and small groups who are happy with an early start, a small aircraft and a soft bag fit well. Anyone who dislikes bush flights, wants Kenya's Mara as well, or cannot take a fixed flight day will fit less well.
What you give up
You give up the Mara, covered by the Kenya guides above. You also give up a second gorilla country. Uganda's published permit is USD 800 against Rwanda's USD 1,500, but reaching it adds a border or a small aircraft, as the Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania guide explains. And you accept a calendar set by a flight that runs three days a week.
Mistakes to avoid
Booking the flight before the permit. The weekday is the whole puzzle.
Assuming a daily service. A missed connection costs a day.
Trusting the 65 minute connection. Without written confirmation, sleep in Arusha.
Assuming one visa covers both. The regional visa excludes Tanzania.
Buying private insurance instead of the government policy. It does not substitute.
Two Serengeti nights. After the transfer you get one clear day. We plan three.
A hard suitcase on the bush flights. Soft bags are the safe choice.
An evening departure after the late Seronera flight. It lands at about 18:20.
What most guides get wrong about this route
Many competitor pages say "flight" without an airline, a weekday or a time. Some state that the regional visa covers Tanzania, which it does not. One says the Serengeti borders the Mara "in Rwanda", one says a flight lands "near Ngorongoro", and several skip Tanzania's new insurance rule. We give the dated, hedged version, with the conflicts shown.
Next steps for your Rwanda and Tanzania safari
To plan your Rwanda and Tanzania trip, start with the permit date, then the RwandAir day, then the lodges. Is there a direct flight from Kigali to Kilimanjaro?+
Yes, RwandAir flies it, and published schedules show Wednesday, Friday and Sunday departures at 11:55, landing at 14:40 after about 1 hour 45 in the air. RwandAir's own page calls the flight WB442 and says it goes through Dar es Salaam, which conflicts with the nonstop times on aggregators, so confirm the routing and the days in the booking engine. We found no other airline flying this pair.
How do you get from Rwanda to the Serengeti?+
Fly RwandAir from Kigali to Kilimanjaro, then either take a Coastal flight from Arusha or Kilimanjaro to Seronera, or drive through Karatu and Ngorongoro. Coastal's timetable also lists a Kigali to Serengeti service on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with a four-seat minimum, but whether it runs is unconfirmed, so do not plan around it without written confirmation.
Can you combine gorilla trekking in Rwanda with a Tanzania safari?+
Yes. The countries are neighbours, Kigali is a short drive from the gorilla area, and one RwandAir flight reaches Kilimanjaro. The catch is the calendar, because that flight runs on only three days a week, so the permit date and the flight day must be chosen together. Tanzania has no gorillas, so the trek happens in Rwanda, and we plan it first on this route.
How much is a Rwanda gorilla permit and who can trek?+
The permit is USD 1,500 per person for foreign visitors on the Rwanda Development Board portal, checked 11 October 2026. The minimum age is 15, groups are limited to 8 and you spend one hour with the family after a briefing at Kinigi at about 7:00. There is no refund for late arrival or your own cancellation, and peak dates sell out months ahead.
Does the East Africa Tourist Visa cover Tanzania?+
No. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only, costs USD 100 and cannot be extended after you leave that three-country area. On a Rwanda and Tanzania route you need a Rwanda visa and a separate Tanzania eVisa, which is USD 50 single entry for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Confirm both on the official portals.
Is travel insurance mandatory for this route?+
Yes, for foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania since 1 October 2026, and the UK FCDO treats the rule as in force. The government policy costs USD 44 per adult and USD 22 for ages 3 to 17, and covers up to 92 days. Buy it from NIC before you travel or on arrival. Private insurance does not substitute, entry may be refused without it, and no penalties have been published.
How many nights do you need in the Serengeti?+
Three nights is our working minimum. After the road transfer or the crater, two nights leave roughly one clear game-drive day, which is our own arithmetic rather than a published rule. Four nights suit guests who want a slower pace or more time with the herds. Resident wildlife stays in the central area all year, but the migrating herds follow the rains.
What is the best time for gorillas and the Serengeti together?+
June to mid-September is the strongest overlap, with Rwanda's long dry season, the western corridor active in June and July, and the north from July. December to February also works, with calving in the south from January. Herd timing varies by weeks and cannot be scheduled, and any departure before early 2027 should allow for heavier than usual rain.
Can you drive from Kigali to the Serengeti?+
Technically yes, but we do not plan it. One operator blog puts the road at more than 16 hours and about 590 km, though that page's own distance figures disagree. The practical routes are RwandAir to Kilimanjaro followed by a short flight or a road transfer through Karatu. We also found nothing published on how the Tanzanian insurance is checked at land borders.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Rwanda and Tanzania?+
Carry it. Tanzania asks for a certificate from travellers arriving from countries with yellow fever risk, and a 2023 notice lists Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, so confirm the current list with your doctor. Rwanda asks arrivals from listed countries, including Kenya and Uganda, which matters if you connect through Nairobi or Entebbe. Uganda dropped its own requirement on 2 October 2026, which changes nothing for Rwanda or Tanzania.
What luggage can I take on the bush flights?+
Coastal allows 15 kg per person including hand luggage, or 30 kg on an extra-large ticket. It recommends soft bags and accepts a hard case up to 76 x 48 x 29 cm. Several other bush airlines in the region also use 15 kg, so pack one soft bag for the domestic legs and leave the rest at your Kigali or Arusha hotel. RwandAir's international allowance is in its current fare rules.
How many days does a Rwanda and Tanzania safari need?+
Nine days is the shortest shape we plan: two nights near the volcanoes, one in Kigali, one in Arusha, one at Karatu or the crater rim and three in the Serengeti. Ten to twelve days add a fourth Serengeti night, a second Tanzanian park and an Arusha buffer before the flight home. Anything shorter forces a same-day connection or only two Serengeti nights.
