How many days for a four country safari? Our planning answer is 14 days as the minimum for a steady pace across Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania, 16 to 18 days for a comfortable loop with a second gorilla trek, and 21 days if you want real slack. Those numbers come from arithmetic, not taste: every stop needs nights, and every border adds a transfer day. This guide shows the sums so you can test any itinerary, ours included.

The short answer Plan 14 days at the minimum for a four country safari with the Mara, the Serengeti, a gorilla trek and one spare night built in. Sixteen to 18 days suits a second trek and a rest day, and 21 days leaves a buffer for a failed trek or a delayed flight. Ten days works only as a fast taster. These are our planning verdicts, built from published transfer times, not a rule.

Day counts are our planning judgement, built from the transfer times below. Schedules and entry rules change, so confirm them for your dates.

How many days for a four country safari: nights per stop

The dependable way to work out how long for a four country safari is to stop guessing a total and count nights per stop. Every night of a trip is spent somewhere, so the number of days is the sum of the nights at each stop, plus one for the departure day. The ledger below lists every stop on the usual route (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania) with three columns: the fewest nights we would plan, a steady pace, and a relaxed pace.

StopFewest nightsSteadyRelaxedWhy the nights are there
Gateway (Entebbe or Kigali)111Long-haul flights land late; the next leg is often a morning flight.
First gorilla base223A night before the trek and a night after it.
Second gorilla country (optional)223The crossing night and the trek night.
Connection night before Kenya111Kigali or Nairobi, so flights are not chained in one day.
Mara234Game drives, and a chance of crossings in season.
Serengeti234Distance between camps and the herds.
Ngorongoro011A crater morning without a rush.
Final night near the departure airport111No international flight straight after a game-drive day.
Spare night (buffer)011The slack that absorbs a delay.

Reading the totals: days for a four country safari at each pace

Read the table as a method, not a menu. Add the column that matches your pace, include the second gorilla row if you want treks in both Uganda and Rwanda, and add one day for departure. With one trek the totals are 10, 14 and 17 days. With two they are 12, 16 and 20 days. A country counted for one night is a stamp, not a safari: if Uganda is only a gateway night before the RwandAir hop, it is on your passport but not in your trip.

However, three rows deserve a comment. The connection night exists because the trip from Kigali to the Mara, via Nairobi, is a long chain of flights, and a missed link has no cushion on the same day. Spare nights are the first thing a shorter itinerary drops, and the one you will miss most. The Mara and Serengeti rows are where we are least willing to cut, because crossings and calving cannot be scheduled. For the timing of those events, read our guide to the best time for a four country safari.

Transfer days: what four countries cost before the first animal

A transfer day is any day when a flight, a border or a long road takes most of the daylight. Four countries need three country changes (Uganda to Rwanda, Rwanda to Kenya, Kenya to Tanzania), plus an arrival and a departure, and each of these takes a day or most of one. Anyone asking how many days for a four country safari must subtract these first. The table gives the legs that go into our ledger.

How long for a four country safari to clear three country changes

Of the three, the Uganda to Rwanda change is the one with a choice. You can fly Entebbe to Kigali in about 1 hour 5 on RwandAir, or cross by road at Katuna (Gatuna) or Cyanika (Kyanika), depending on which Bwindi or Volcanoes sector you are visiting. Opening hours at both crossings are reported inconsistently, so we plan to cross in daylight and allow 30 to 60 minutes at the border itself. Our Uganda Rwanda border crossing guide owns that detail.

The other two changes are flights. Rwanda to Kenya is a scheduled flight that rarely fits comfortably into the same day as a light aircraft to the Mara, which is why the ledger carries a connection night. Kenya to Tanzania is an air link between the parks, and it behaves differently from the rest.

AirKenya's 2026 timetable has an air, road and air link from the Mara to the Serengeti via Migori in Kenya and Tarime in Tanzania. It departs the Mara at 08:05 and reaches Seronera at about 12:30, so the afternoon is usable. It runs daily to 31 December 2026 but not from 1 April to 20 May, and it needs a minimum of two passengers (four from 1 November to 15 December). Safarilink and Coastal also publish a link.

Some 2026 operators still route the Mara to Serengeti leg through Nairobi and Kilimanjaro or Arusha, which adds a day. As a result, a 14 day plan can become a 15 day plan for an April or May departure, or for a party that does not meet the passenger minimum. Confirm the link for your dates before you fix the length of the trip.

In practice, this is the one leg where the calendar rewrites the ledger, so how many days Uganda Rwanda Kenya Tanzania needs can differ by a day between April and July. For example, a July party that meets the passenger minimum can use the morning link and reach Seronera by about 12:30, while an April party goes via Nairobi and Kilimanjaro or Arusha and loses a day. Ask your planner for the timetable on your dates, and for the number of passengers it assumes, before you compare lengths between quotes.

What each length gives you: how many days for a four country safari from 10 to 21

The right-hand column is our planning judgement for each length, not an industry standard, so how many days for a four country safari you need depends on which verdict you can live with. We assume arrival is day 1, the Mara and Serengeti are reached by air, and the permit dates are fixed first.

DaysWhat it realistically gives youOur verdict
10One trek (Rwanda or Uganda), Uganda mostly a gateway night, 2 nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti, no Ngorongoro.Tight. A fast taster of four countries; we would rather plan three in 10 days.
12One trek, 2 to 3 nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti, 1 at Ngorongoro. Rwanda is the practical gorilla base: the road from Kigali is short. The shortest we call realistic, if Uganda is a crossing or one night.
14Either one trek, 3 nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti, 1 at Ngorongoro and a spare night, or two treks flight-led with no slack. The comfortable minimum for one trek.
16The 14 day plan plus a second trek (consecutive day, or Uganda plus Rwanda) or an extra night at Kisoro or Lake Bunyonyi.Good.
18A full trek in Uganda and in Rwanda, golden monkeys or the Dian Fossey hike, 3 nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti, 1 at Ngorongoro, a rest day.Good and comfortable.
21Everything above plus extra Mara or Serengeti nights, a savannah park such as Akagera, or a Zanzibar extension.Comfortable, with room for a failed trek or a delayed flight.

A different pace gives a different answer.

Why 14 days is the dividing line, and what 21 adds

Why does 14 days appear as the dividing line? Because below it the spare night disappears. At 14 days the steady column fits, with one trek, and the day count carries one night of slack. Two treks fit into 14 days only by folding the connection night into a Kigali night and dropping the spare, which is exactly the shape of our 14 day four country safari.

At the other end, 21 days does not mean more of the same. Instead, it means resilience. A cancelled flight, a trek that finds no gorillas or a closed airstrip each cost a day, and a trip with no spare day pays for it in wildlife time. For what to do if a trek fails, see gorillas first or last on safari.

Minimum days for four countries in East Africa: what to cut first

If your calendar allows 10 or 12 days, the question changes from how long to what to cut, and the order of cuts matters. Our planners remove things in this sequence, from the least costly to the most:

  1. Ngorongoro. It is a rest-and-scenery stop rather than a core stay, and it is the first night to drop.
  2. The second gorilla trek. One trek, in the country that is easiest to reach, saves two nights and a border day. Our guide to combining Uganda and Rwanda gorilla trekking explains when both are worth it.
  3. Lodge nights in the gorilla country you skip. Make that country a gateway night, not a stay.
  4. Nights in the Mara and the Serengeti, down to two each. This is the floor, not a target. At two nights you accept a smaller chance of crossings or calving.
  5. A country. If the first four cuts are not enough, the fix is three countries, not four rushed ones.

In short, cutting days removes lodge nights but not the legs. The flights, the borders and the permits are the same whether you take 10 days or 14, so a shorter trip is not proportionately smaller. So a four-country route rarely makes sense as a short break. Our East Africa safari cost guide explains what drives the total.

The minimum days for four countries in East Africa are therefore set by the transfers, not by the wildlife, and the number of days for a four country safari is mostly a transport question. We have not found an official or industry standard for it, and some published routes quote lengths without saying how many treks or parks they include. A four country safari length means little until you know which stops it holds.

A worked example: how many days for a four country safari on a 14 day route

This sample shows the days for a four country safari on the ledger with two treks, a flight-led pace and no slack. It has 13 nights: 1 in Entebbe, 2 at a Uganda gorilla base, 1 near Kinigi, 1 in Kigali, 3 in the Mara, 3 in the Serengeti, 1 at Ngorongoro and 1 in the final stop. It is an outline, not a fixed itinerary; we confirm every flight and transfer in your quote.

Counting the days in the 14 day route

Now count. Only five of the 14 days are full activity days (3, 7, 8, 10 and 11). Nine days carry a flight, a border or a long road (1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, 13 and 14), and four of those nine also give half a day of wildlife. Three days (4, 6 and 12) are mostly travel. That is what the question of how many days Uganda Rwanda Kenya Tanzania needs really measures: about a third of a 14 day trip is movement.

That said, Day 6 is the least forgiving. It works only when a Kigali morning flight connects to an afternoon light aircraft from Wilson, and that depends on the timetable for your date. If it does not connect, you spend a night in Nairobi. That night is what the 16 day version of this plan buys, along with a longer gap between the two treks.

A Serengeti camp where nights per stop shape the days a four country safari needs
A camp in the Serengeti. Three nights here, not two, is the steady pace in our ledger.

Realistic pace: buffers, rain and failed treks

A realistic pace is not the average speed of a trip. It is how much of it can go wrong before something you came for is lost. We look at three things when we test how many days for a four country safari is enough.

The permit date comes first. A gorilla permit covers one person, one trek and one date. Two treks on consecutive days need two permits, and operators routinely book them that way. Rwanda's permit is not refunded for late arrival or your own cancellation. In Uganda, UWA's published tariff charges a 25% fine for late rescheduling. So the permit date anchors the trip, and the other days are arranged around it. Book as early as you can for peak dates; for months and prices see our permit booking guide.

Delays, rain and the spare night

Light aircraft are the soft spot. The Kisoro and Kihihi flights, the Wilson to Mara flight and the air link into Tanzania all use small aircraft with a soft-bag limit of about 15 kg. A delay on one of them moves everything behind it, which is why we avoid chaining two on one day without a buffer.

Rain moves days. Kenya Met warned on 10 September 2026 of heavy short rains from October to December that could continue into February 2027. For any departure from now to early 2027, therefore, treat the spare night as essential, and expect slower roads.

Planning tip: put the spare night just ahead of the longest flight chain, not at the end of the trip. A delay on the way into the Mara costs you game-drive days. A spare night at the very end only protects your flight home. If you must choose one place for slack, choose the place where a delay hurts most.

Also, pace depends on the people. We aim for no more than two travel days in a row, and we ask how many treks the group wants before we count a single day. The minimum age for a gorilla trek is 15 in both Uganda and Rwanda, which shapes the plan for families. The trek itself can take much of the day; see how fit you need to be for gorilla trekking.

Who each length suits, and what to avoid

Match the four country safari length to the traveller, not the other way round. The groups below show how many days for a four country safari we advise for each type of traveller, based on the ledger.

  • First safari in East Africa: 16 to 18 days. Every stop is new, and a spare night costs less than a disappointed one.
  • Photographers: 18 to 21 days, spent in extra Mara and Serengeti nights rather than extra countries. Crossings cannot be promised at any length.
  • Families with teenagers: 16 days or more, with at most one trek day in a row. Both countries set 15 as the minimum age.
  • Fit, experienced, short on time: 12 to 14 days, accepting a flight-led plan.
  • Milestone trips: 18 to 21 days, where slack is the point.

Mistakes to avoid when choosing four country safari length

  • Counting arrival and departure days as safari days. They are transfers with a bed at the end.
  • Counting a country because you land in it. One night in Entebbe does not make a Uganda safari.
  • Cutting the Mara or the Serengeti to one night. It saves a day and loses the reason for the stop.
  • Planning the air link into Tanzania for a date it does not run. Check the April to May gap and the passenger minimum.
  • Ending the route back in Kenya after Tanzania. It can need separate entry paperwork; the entry section below explains.
  • Booking the flight home the same day as a long road. Add the final night.

What most guides get wrong about four country safari length

Most pages that answer how long for a four country safari give one number and do not explain how they chose it. In the published itineraries we read while researching this guide, a 20 day plan spent about half its days in transit with no rest day, a 13 day plan ended with a road leg of five to six hours, and a 10 day plan did not mention pace at all. One page recommended about two weeks for a different set of countries, and its own ranges added up to more. Our advice is the reverse: state the number of treks, the number of stops and the spare nights, and the four country safari duration follows.

Fewer countries, more days: when three beats four

If the minimum days for four countries in East Africa are more than your calendar allows, three countries fit better. Is it better to do fewer countries in more depth? For most travellers with fewer than 12 days, in our judgement, yes. Three countries give you nearly the same animals with fewer transfer days. Dropping Uganda leaves Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania, which our Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania guide covers, and it fits the 10 day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari. Dropping Kenya leaves a gorilla trek plus Tanzania, which suits the 12 day Uganda Rwanda Tanzania safari.

On the other hand, if you want gorillas in both Uganda and Rwanda, plus the Mara and the Serengeti, you are asking for a four-country route and should plan the days for it. The route guide, Uganda Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari, covers the order and the legs. For Tanzania on its own, see how many days you need for a Tanzania safari.

How many days if you add Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a fifth stop, not a fourth country, and the ledger treats it as an add-on. Adding Zanzibar adds days to a four country safari: our planning shape adds four nights, so an 18 day route becomes about 22 days. The scheduled nonstop flight from Kilimanjaro takes about 1 hour 20, which keeps the transfer short. Our guide to adding Zanzibar to your safari covers the beaches, the flights and the paperwork.

Entry rules and the four country safari duration

Paperwork does not change the number of days for a four country safari, but it can change the order, and order changes the days.

The regional tourist visa (EATV) covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only, and it is valid for 90 days. It does not cover Tanzania, which has its own eVisa. If the route goes into Tanzania and then back into Kenya, Uganda or Rwanda, you need separate authorisation for the return (our reading of the published rules; confirm with immigration). That is one reason we finish in Tanzania, and why the last days of the trip are Tanzania days. The decision itself is covered in our East Africa tourist visa guide.

For Kenya's electronic travel authorisation, some official embassy pages say EATV holders do not need a separate eTA, but Kenya's own eTA portal does not confirm it yet, so confirm with Kenya's immigration helpdesk before you rely on it. Apply well before you travel; the Kenya eTA guide has the mechanics. Tanzania's mandatory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors entering the mainland has applied since 1 October 2026, and UK FCDO (updated 9 October 2026) treats it as in force; see our insurance guide.

Health alerts are dated. As of 11 October 2026, WHO's update of 8 October describes the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak as centred on DR Congo. Uganda declared its own outbreak over on 27 August 2026, and Kenya confirmed its first imported case on 6 October 2026. Government advisory levels differ and some pages lag, so read the live pages from WHO, CDC and UK FCDO. Our hub keeps a dated health alerts note and an entry alerts note.

Next steps: how many days for a four country safari suits you

Before you settle how many days for a four country safari you need, start with four facts: your dates, how many gorilla treks you want, whether the Mara River matters, and how much slack you need. Our planners turn those into a night-by-night ledger like the one above, confirm the Kigali, Wilson and air link legs for your dates, and tell you plainly if the four country safari duration you have cannot hold the route you want.

Every night you add also adds fixed fees in the parks. Our four country safari cost guide shows the park-fee nights on each of our routes, so you can test how a longer trip changes the cost.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania?
Plan 14 days as the minimum for a steady pace, 16 to 18 days for a comfortable route with a second gorilla trek, and 21 days if you want room for a failed trek or a delayed flight. These are our planning verdicts, built from published flight and road times rather than any official standard. The total depends mostly on how many treks you want and how many nights you give the Mara and the Serengeti.
Is 10 days enough for a four-country safari?
Only as a fast taster. Ten days fits a single trek, two nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti, and little else, with Uganda reduced to a gateway night. In our judgement, three countries in 10 days make a better trip than four. If you still choose four, expect early starts, light aircraft and no spare day, and confirm every flight for your dates.
What is a comfortable length for four countries?
Sixteen to 18 days. That gives a trek in Uganda and one in Rwanda, or a rest day instead, three nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti, a night at Ngorongoro and a spare night to absorb a delay. Below 14 days the spare night disappears, and you notice it the first time a flight moves. Comfort here means slack, not extra luxury.
How many days should I allow for gorilla trekking?
Allow two days for one trek: a night at the gorilla base before it and the trek day, with a night after before any flight. A second trek in the other country adds about two more days, including the border crossing. One permit covers one person, one trek and one date, so treks on consecutive days need two permits. Book as early as you can for peak dates.
How many days for the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro?
In our planning the least is two nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti, and a steady pace is three each, plus one night at Ngorongoro. Crossings and calving cannot be scheduled, so extra nights raise your chances without promising anything. The move between the Mara and the Serengeti takes about half a day on the air link when it runs, and a day longer via Nairobi.
How many days will I lose to travel between countries?
Expect about a third of the trip. In our 14 day worked example, nine of the 14 days carry a flight, a border or a long road, and only five are full activity days. Four of those nine still give half a day of wildlife. Three country changes, plus arrival and departure, are fixed; the rest depends on whether you fly or drive between parks.
Can I do four countries in two weeks?
Yes, in 14 days with flights between the main stops, but with little slack. One trek plus a spare night fits comfortably. Two treks fit only on a flight-led plan with no spare night. Road legs make it tighter, and a delayed light aircraft can cost a wildlife day. We advise confirming the Kigali to Mara connection and the air link into Tanzania for your dates first.
What is the difference between 14 days and 21 days on this route?
Fourteen days gives one steady loop, and 21 days gives depth and resilience. The extra week buys a second trek or golden monkeys, more nights in the Mara and the Serengeti, a savannah park or a Zanzibar extension, and a buffer against a failed trek or a delayed flight. The animals are largely the same; the difference is how much can go wrong before something is lost.
Is it better to do fewer countries in more depth?
For most travellers with fewer than 12 days, yes, in our judgement. Three countries give nearly the same wildlife with fewer transfer days, and the saved days go into extra nights in the Mara and the Serengeti. If you want gorillas in both Uganda and Rwanda plus the Mara and the Serengeti, plan 16 days or more instead of trimming stops.
How many days do I need if I add Zanzibar?
Add about four nights, so an 18 day route becomes about 22 days. Zanzibar is a fifth stop rather than a fourth country, and it normally comes last, after the Serengeti. The scheduled nonstop flight from Kilimanjaro takes about 1 hour 20, but confirm the schedule. Check Tanzania's insurance rule for how a Zanzibar stay is covered before you add it.
Does the day count change if the air link into the Serengeti is not running?
It can add a day. AirKenya's 2026 link does not run from 1 April to 20 May, and it needs at least two passengers (four from 1 November to 15 December). When it does not operate, some operators route through Nairobi and Kilimanjaro or Arusha, which adds a day. Confirm the link for your dates before you compare quotes of different lengths.
Does the order of countries change the number of days?
It can. The regional tourist visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda but not Tanzania, so we finish in Tanzania. Returning from Tanzania to Kenya, Uganda or Rwanda needs separate authorisation (our reading of the published rules; confirm with immigration). A route that doubles back also adds transfer days as well as paperwork, which is why we avoid it.
