A Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari works best when you start in Kigali, trek mountain gorillas once in Rwanda, fly to the Mara in Kenya and finish on the Serengeti plains in Tanzania. The route is real and bookable, but it hangs on three facts most guides skip: the gorilla permit date is fixed first, no scheduled flight links Kigali to the Mara, and the Mara to Serengeti link is a chain of air, road and air. This guide explains each step, with entry rules checked 11 October 2026.

The short answer Yes, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania make a strong three-country route, and Kigali is the right place to start. Trek once in Rwanda, spend a night in Nairobi, fly to the Mara, then use the Mara to Serengeti air, road and air link and fly home from Kilimanjaro. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda and Kenya but not Tanzania, so Kenya before Tanzania is the order that suits it.

Why a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari works as one trip

The three countries give you three different encounters, and they barely repeat each other. Rwanda gives you the mountain gorilla, in the volcano forest above Musanze (see our Volcanoes National Park guide). Kenya offers the Mara: lions, leopards, cheetahs and open grassland, with conservancies that limit vehicle numbers. Tanzania adds scale, with Serengeti plains that run to the horizon and herds that follow the rains.

The Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem divided by a border. Seeing both on one trip lets you follow the same wildlife story from the Kenyan side to the Tanzanian side, which is the main reason a Rwanda Tanzania Kenya safari beats a single-country plan for guests who want the migration landscape and gorillas together. Herd timing varies by weeks and cannot be scheduled, so read how the migration works before you pick dates.

Rwanda also solves a practical problem. From Kigali the gorilla area is a 2 to 3 hour drive, while Entebbe to Bwindi in Uganda is 8 to 10 hours by road, or about 1 hour 15 minutes by light aircraft. A short, predictable first leg is what lets a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania tour fit together without a lost day.

Neither Kenya and Tanzania alone nor a Rwanda-only trip gives you this mix. Kenya and Tanzania together are covered in our Kenya and Tanzania guide, but they have no gorillas. If you would like Uganda as well, the longer shape is in our four-country route guide. The wider picture of how these routes compare sits in the East Africa multi-country safari hub.

How to start in Kigali on a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari

Kigali is the arrival point because it puts the most fixed, most physical day of the trip at the beginning, with the gateway to the trek close by. The gorillas are the one part of a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania itinerary that you cannot move around easily, so everything else is built backwards from that date.

The permit date comes first

A Rwanda permit is for one person, one trek and one date. The price is USD 1,500 for foreign visitors on the Rwanda Development Board portal, and the rules are strict: no refund for late arrival or your own cancellation. Peak dates sell out months ahead, so we secure the permit before we book any flight. That is why the Rwanda leg anchors the plan, and why our guide to booking gorilla permits matters more here than any seasonal chart.

Whether gorillas belong first or last in a longer trip is a debate of its own, set out in gorillas first or last. On this route the answer is mostly made for you: an arrival into Kigali, a short road and a fresh pair of legs all point to first.

Arrival day and the road to the volcanoes

Kigali airport to Musanze takes about 2 to 3 hours by road, and the trek briefing at Kinigi is at about 7:00, so we place you in a lodge near the park the night before. That means a flight that lands by early afternoon. A late arrival goes to a Kigali hotel instead, and the first night near the park is trimmed.

The usual rhythm is two nights near the park: arrival and rest, then the trek day. On the third morning you drive back to Kigali and fly on to Nairobi in the afternoon. The trek length varies from about half an hour to four hours or more of walking, followed by up to one hour with the gorillas, so a realistic read on fitness helps you choose lodges and porters.

If you want two treks on consecutive days, you need two permits, because each permit covers one trek on one date. Our guide to how to combine Uganda and Rwanda gorilla trekking covers doing more than one. For this route we plan a single Rwanda trek, and we explain why in the section on one gorilla trek.

Three route shapes for a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari

Once Kigali is the start, the real decision is the order of Kenya and Tanzania, and whether you can rely on the direct Mara to Serengeti link. There are three shapes, and the table sets out what each means for flights and entry documents.

ShapeOrderHow it movesEntry logicBest when
AKigali, Nairobi, Mara, Serengeti, home from KilimanjaroFlight to Nairobi, light aircraft to the Mara, air, road and air link into TanzaniaEATV from Rwanda covers Kenya; Tanzania needs its own visa and insurance; trip ends in TanzaniaYou want the default route with the fewest documents

Confirm schedules and entry rules for your own dates.

Shape A: the default Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari

We plan this shape most often. It ends in Tanzania, so the East Africa Tourist Visa remains useful for Rwanda and Kenya, and the Tanzanian leg is the last border you cross. Our 10 day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari follows this shape: two nights near the volcanoes, one in Nairobi, three in the Mara and three in the Serengeti, then a flight home from Kilimanjaro. For a shorter trip that stops in Kenya, the 8 day Rwanda Kenya safari uses the same first half.

Shapes B and C: the fallback and the reverse

Shape B is the fallback, not a different holiday. It matters because the direct link does not run every day of the year (see below). Going through Wilson and Arusha costs a day, which is why we choose the dates to avoid it where we can.

Shape C works, but with two cautions. RwandAir flies Kigali to Kilimanjaro several times a week and the days differ between sources, so confirm them. We also found AirKenya's link timetable only in the Mara to Serengeti direction, so a Serengeti to Mara run must be confirmed for your dates. Because the visa is spent when you leave for Tanzania, Kenya at the end needs a separate authorisation. Our reading of the rules is explained under entry rules.

Day counts and nights per stop are the subject of how many days a multi-country trip needs, but the pattern above is the working minimum for this route.

Flights out of Kigali on a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari

Two international legs leave Kigali on this route, and one popular assumption is wrong. Every published source we found shows scheduled flights from Kigali to both Nairobi and Kilimanjaro, and none shows a direct flight from Kigali to the Mara or to the Serengeti. The Mara and the Serengeti are reached from Nairobi Wilson and from Kilimanjaro or Arusha.

Why a Nairobi night belongs in a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania trip

A trek morning leaves you in Musanze, 2 to 3 hours from the airport, so no morning flight is reachable from the volcanoes. Operators report that a same-day connection from Nairobi's main airport to the Mara works only if you land before about 11:00, because the transfer to Wilson Airport takes an hour or more and check-in for the bush flight closes 60 minutes before departure. We would rather add a night than risk a missed light aircraft that has only a few departures a day.

Packing tip: the 15 kg soft-bag limit includes hand luggage, and a hard suitcase will not be accepted. Coastal sells an extra-large seat for a 30 kg allowance if you carry photographic equipment. Leave surplus clothing at your Nairobi hotel and travel with one soft bag from the Mara onward.

The overall flight picture across East Africa is covered in our safari flight logistics guide, and the choice between flying and driving between parks is in fly-in or road safari.

Lions in the Mara, the Kenya stop on a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari
Lions in the Mara. Three nights here is the pattern we plan.

This is the leg that decides whether your Rwanda Kenya Tanzania itinerary feels smooth or broken. There is no scheduled direct flight across the border, and the road is long. What exists is a linked service built from two light-aircraft flights and a short road transfer.

How the link works

AirKenya's 2026 timetable has a flight from the Mara to Migori in Kenya, a short bus transfer across the border at Isebania with immigration, and a second flight from Tarime in Tanzania into the Serengeti. It leaves the Mara at 08:05 and reaches Seronera at about 12:30, roughly four and a half hours door to door. It is a long morning, but it saves a day compared with routing through Arusha.

You clear Kenyan exit and Tanzanian entry during the road transfer, so your passport, Tanzanian visa and printed insurance certificate must be in your hand luggage, not in the checked bag. We found no published word on whether the Tanzanian insurance certificate is checked at this crossing, so carry the printed copy.

When the link does not run

The 2026 timetable shows the service daily to 31 December 2026 but not from 1 April to 20 May. It needs a minimum of 2 passengers, rising to 4 passengers from 1 November to 15 December. Safarilink and Coastal also publish a link, but their version is later in the day: the Mara departure is at 11:30 and the Serengeti arrival falls between 14:45 and 17:05. The strip at Tarime has been unreliable before: it closed for maintenance from 21 April to 31 May 2025.

Confirm before you rely on it. Some 2026 operators still describe the Mara to Serengeti leg as going through Nairobi and Kilimanjaro or Arusha, which adds a day. Both can be true on different dates. We reconfirm the link for your dates when we quote, and keep the Arusha routing ready as a fallback.

The road, and why we do not choose it

You can cross at Isebania by road, but sources put the trip at 10 to 14 hours, including one to three hours at the border. After that the road continues into the Serengeti, which is why we reserve it for guests who specifically want an overland trip. For most travellers the flight chain, or the Arusha fallback, is the better use of a day.

Entry rules for a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari: visas, eTA and insurance

Three countries mean three entry systems, and the obvious shortcut, a single visa, does not stretch far enough. The table shows what each country asks on this route. We give the official fee where we found one, and the full mechanics sit in the guides linked beneath.

CountryWhat you needOfficial feeNote
RwandaEast Africa Tourist Visa (EATV), applied for through Rwanda's Irembo portal, or a separate Rwanda visaUSD 100 for the EATVEnter Rwanda first; apply online ahead of travel
KenyaAn eTA from etakenya.go.ke, unless your EATV removes the need (see note)USD 30 standardApply only on the official portal; plan 2 weeks ahead
TanzaniaA Tanzania eVisa, plus the government inbound insuranceUSD 50 eVisa for most nationalities; USD 100 for US citizens; USD 44 insurance per adultThe EATV does not cover Tanzania

Fees and rules can change, so confirm on the official portals before you pay.

Visas and the eTA on a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania trip

The East Africa Tourist Visa. It covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only, lasts 90 days and cannot be renewed after you leave that three-country area. On this route it pays off only when you enter Rwanda first and finish in Tanzania. The full decision, including how to apply, is in our East Africa tourist visa guide. We cannot promise on-arrival issue, so apply online ahead. If your route goes into Tanzania and then back into Kenya, you need a separate authorisation for the return (our reading of the published rules; confirm with immigration).

Kenya's eTA. Some official embassy pages say EATV holders do not need a separate eTA, but Kenya's own eTA portal does not confirm it yet, so confirm with Kenya's immigration helpdesk before you rely on it. Our Kenya eTA guide covers the mechanics.

Insurance, passports and health on this route

Tanzania's insurance. The inbound travel insurance is treated as in force from 1 October 2026 by the UK FCDO. Private insurance does not replace it, and entry may be refused without it. We found no published penalties or enforcement news as of 11 October 2026. The details are in our Tanzania insurance guide, and we still advise private cover for cancellation and evacuation: see travel insurance and medical evacuation.

Passports. Keep at least six months of validity from arrival and at least two blank pages to be safe. The UK FCDO lists two for Kenya, while Kenya's own eTA page says one.

Health. Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from countries with transmission risk. A Tanzania Ministry of Health notice dated 2023 lists Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda among the countries it asks a certificate from, and the lists can change, so carry your certificate; our yellow fever certificate guide sets out each journey. Kenya confirmed its first imported Ebola case on 6 October 2026 and the outbreak is centred on the DR Congo; no cases were reported in Rwanda or Tanzania in the CDC table of 7 October. Advisories differ by government and some lag, so read the live pages from WHO, the CDC and UK FCDO. Our hub tracks the dated notices under health alerts, and the malaria and vaccine basics are in our vaccination guide.

One gorilla trek in Rwanda: permit, age and what to book first

On a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari, one gorilla trek is the right amount. A single trek gives you the full encounter, and it keeps the time and money for the Mara and Serengeti, where three nights each is the pattern that gives you a real chance of a good day. A second trek is possible, but it needs a second permit, a second date and another night.

The Rwanda rules, from the Rwanda Development Board portal as of 11 October 2026:

  • Price. USD 1,500 per person for foreign visitors, for one trek on one date.
  • Age. The minimum age is 15, so a Rwanda leg is not an option for younger children on this route.
  • Group and time. Groups are limited to 8 people, and you get up to one hour with the family.
  • Briefing. You report at Kinigi at about 7:00.
  • Refunds. None for late arrival or your own cancellation. A refund of 75 percent applies if you track all day with no contact, and a retry or full refund if the family moves away and cannot be found.

Our account of the trek day describes the hike itself. We keep Rwanda to two nights on this route to protect the days in Kenya and Tanzania. If you want more primates, it is better to add a second Rwanda day or a different route than to squeeze a second trek into the same Nairobi flight day. For the comparison of Rwanda with Uganda on price, access and permits, see Uganda vs Rwanda, and for our own Rwanda departures see Rwanda safari packages.

The permit also decides the flight home. If you expect to leave from Kilimanjaro in the evening, work out your Rwanda date first, then count forward nine nights for the standard pattern. For cost drivers across the whole region, our East Africa safari cost guide explains what moves the price.

Which months suit a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari

A month-by-month calendar belongs to our best time for a four country safari guide, so here is the short version for a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania trip. Gorillas can be trekked all year. Rwanda's long dry season runs from June to mid-September, with a second short dry spell from December to February. Crossings of the Mara River run from about July to October, peaking in August and September, while calving is January to March in the southern Serengeti.

MonthsRwanda trekMara and SerengetiVerdict
June to mid-SeptemberLong dry seasonHerds move from the Grumeti into the northern Serengeti and the MaraStrongest window for this route
October to NovemberShort rainsHerds begin to head southPossible, with more weather risk
December to FebruaryShort dry spellCalving in the south of the SerengetiDifferent route: Mara is quieter
March to MayLong rainsRains; the Mara to Serengeti link is off from 1 April to 20 MayHardest to plan

Timings vary by weeks from year to year, and river crossings cannot be promised.

Kenya's weather service warned on 10 September 2026 of heavy rain from October to December that could continue into February 2027, linked to El Nino. Treat any departure from now into early 2027 as carrying extra mud and delay risk, especially on the road to the volcanoes and on bush airstrips. We do not promise a crossing at any time of year: for the timing detail, read our Mara River crossing guide.

Who a Rwanda Kenya Tanzania trip suits, and the mistakes to avoid

A Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari suits guests who want the highlights of three countries and are comfortable with early starts and bush flights. It is a good fit for couples and small groups who have limited time, and for travellers who do not want a long road day to reach the gorillas. It suits less well anyone who dislikes small aircraft, cannot take a 15 kg soft bag, or wants to see the herds crossing a river on a fixed day.

  • Same-day Volcanoes to Mara. It cannot be done from a trek morning. Add the Nairobi night.
  • Assuming one visa covers the route. The EATV stops at Tanzania's border, and Tanzania's own visa and insurance are separate.
  • Ending in Kenya after Tanzania without checking the visa. The EATV is spent once you leave for Tanzania.
  • Booking flights before the permit. The permit date is the fixed point, so every flight should follow it.
  • Only two nights in the Serengeti. After the long link morning you get roughly one clear day. We plan three.
  • Counting on a river crossing. It is a possibility, not a booking.

What most guides get wrong about this Rwanda Kenya Tanzania route

Several guides contradict themselves on whether a direct Kigali to Mara flight exists; none is listed, so plan through Nairobi. Many quote the Nairobi flight at anything from under an hour to three hours, which is why we leave the duration to your ticket. Some imply that the EATV works in Tanzania; it does not. And most skip Tanzania's new insurance rule altogether. For a wider look at when to use the Arusha fallback, our comparison of the Serengeti and the Mara for the migration helps with the choice.

Next steps for your Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari

Start with the permit date, then the flights, then the lodges. Our planners in Entebbe and Kakindu can confirm the Kigali flight days, the Mara to Serengeti link for your dates and the entry documents in writing. Pick the package closest to your timing, or ask us to adapt it:

Dropping Uganda changes the fixed fees as well as the route: one gorilla permit instead of two, and a different set of visas. Our four country safari cost guide sets the permits, park fees and entry costs of this route beside the longer ones.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania a good three-country safari?
Yes, if you have enough days and accept bush flights. The route pairs a Rwanda gorilla trek with the Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania, three very different encounters. It needs air legs, a border transfer at the Mara to Serengeti link and a 15 kg soft bag. It suits travellers who want breadth over a slow pace, and who book the permit date first.
Which order works best when you start in Kigali?
Rwanda, then Kenya, then Tanzania is the order we plan most often. It keeps the East Africa Tourist Visa useful for Rwanda and Kenya and finishes in Tanzania, where a separate visa applies anyway. Tanzania before Kenya also works, but the visa no longer covers your return to Kenya, and the Serengeti to Mara run must be confirmed for your dates.
How do you get from Kigali to Kenya and from Kenya to Tanzania?
Fly Kigali to Nairobi with RwandAir or Kenya Airways, spend a night, then take a light aircraft from Nairobi Wilson to the Mara. For Tanzania, use the Mara to Serengeti link of two short flights and a border bus transfer, or route through Arusha when the link is not running. No scheduled flight connects Kigali directly to the Mara or the Serengeti.
Can you cross from the Masai Mara into the Serengeti by road?
Yes, at Isebania on the Kenyan side, but it is a long day. Sources put the road journey at 10 to 14 hours, including one to three hours at the border, and the roads are rough in places. The air and road link takes about four and a half hours from the Mara to Seronera, so most guests choose it and keep the road for those who want to drive.
Does the East Africa Tourist Visa cover Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania?
No. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only, costs USD 100 and lasts 90 days. Tanzania needs its own visa, which you apply for online at eservices.immigration.go.tz. Because leaving the three-country area ends the usefulness of the EATV, we arrange routes so that the Tanzania leg comes last. Confirm the fee and rules on the official portals before paying.
Do I need Tanzania's new travel insurance on this route?
Yes, if you are a foreign visitor entering mainland Tanzania, with exceptions for residents of EAC and SADC states. The government inbound policy costs USD 44 per adult and is treated as in force from 1 October 2026 by the UK FCDO. Private cover does not replace it. We found nothing published on whether it is checked at the Isebania crossing, so carry the printed certificate.
How many gorilla treks should I do in Rwanda on this route?
One is the right number for most guests. A Rwanda permit costs USD 1,500 per person per trek, covers one date and gives up to one hour with the family. A second trek means a second permit and another night, which cuts into the Mara and Serengeti days. If you want two treks, we plan them on consecutive dates with two separate permits and a longer trip.
When is the best time for the Mara and Serengeti on one trip?
The window from July to early October is the strongest, because it combines Rwanda's long dry season with the months when herds are in the northern Serengeti and the Mara. River crossings run about July to October, peaking in August and September, but they cannot be promised and move by weeks. Kenya's weather service warned of heavy rain from October 2026 into early 2027, so allow buffers then.
How many days do I need for Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania?
Our standard pattern uses ten days and nine nights: two near the volcanoes, one in Nairobi, three in the Mara and three in the Serengeti. Fewer days means dropping the Nairobi night or shortening the bush stays, which raises the risk of missed flights. Our guide on how many days a multi-country trip needs sets out what each length gives you.
Is there a direct flight from Kigali to the Mara or the Serengeti?
No. We found no scheduled direct flight from Kigali to the Mara or to the Serengeti in any airline timetable we checked. Kigali has scheduled flights to Nairobi and to Kilimanjaro, and the bush parks are reached from there on light aircraft. Be wary of any itinerary that implies a direct link without naming the airline, the day and the airstrip.
Which airport do I fly home from?
Usually Kilimanjaro, because the Serengeti flights go there. The afternoon Coastal service reaches Kilimanjaro at about 18:20, so plan an international departure that evening or later, or add a night near Arusha. A morning flight from the Serengeti reaches Arusha at about 11:45, and the road from Kilimanjaro airport to Arusha takes about one hour. Confirm the times for your date.
What does this route cost per person?
We do not publish a single figure here, because the total depends on your dates, lodges and group size. The fixed official items are the Rwanda permit of USD 1,500, the visas, Kenya's eTA of USD 30 and Tanzania's insurance of USD 44 per adult. Lodges and flights then vary by season. Our East Africa safari cost guide explains the drivers, and our planners quote in writing.
