A Uganda Rwanda border crossing for gorilla trekking happens at one of two land posts: Katuna (Uganda) and Gatuna (Rwanda), which are the same crossing on the Kigali to Kabale road, or Cyanika (Rwanda) and Kyanika (Uganda), between Musanze and Kisoro. Which one you use depends on the Bwindi or Mgahinga sector you are heading for, not on any reputation the post has. This guide gives both names, hours, documents, vehicle rules, journey times and the 2019 to 2022 closure history.

The short answer Use Katuna (Uganda) and Gatuna (Rwanda), about 2 hours from Kigali, for Bwindi's Buhoma and Ruhija sectors. Use Cyanika (Rwanda) and Kyanika (Uganda), about 2 to 3 hours from Kigali via Musanze, for Mgahinga and the Volcanoes link. Carry your passport and visa approval, allow 30 to 60 minutes at the post, and cross in daylight, because published opening hours conflict and we could not confirm them officially.

The Uganda Rwanda border crossing options at a glance

Each crossing has two names because each country names its own side. For the first, Uganda calls its side Katuna and Rwanda calls its side Gatuna. For the second, Rwanda calls its side Cyanika and Uganda calls its side Kyanika. They are one post each, not four. Many pages use only one name, so a traveller searching for the other name may think they have found a different border. They have not.

The choice between them is a road choice. Katuna and Gatuna sit on the main road between Kigali and Kabale, while Cyanika and Kyanika sit on the road through Musanze towards Kisoro, close to the Volcanoes and Mgahinga gorilla areas. A Rwanda Uganda border crossing for a gorilla trip is almost always one or the other, and the right one follows from where your permits are, as the table shows.

Our planning ruleCross in daylight and confirm hoursCross in daylight and confirm hours

None is an official schedule, so treat hours and times as reported.

Katuna and Gatuna: the Kigali to Kabale crossing

Katuna and Gatuna is the busiest Uganda Rwanda border crossing, according to one operator guide, and the one most visitors meet first when they drive from Kigali. It lies about 2 hours from Kigali by road. One undated listing puts it about 80 km from Kigali airport, which fits that timing but comes from a weak source, so we use the time and not the distance.

From the border the road runs to Kabale, a common lunch stop, and on to the Bwindi sectors. Katuna serves Ruhija and Buhoma directly. With the road through Kabale it also reaches Rushaga and Nkuringo. Ruhija is the closer of the two northern sectors to Kigali, by about 40 minutes less driving than Buhoma according to one operator. Our Bwindi sector guide explains how the sectors differ once you arrive.

One-stop post and the tourist lane

The Daily Monitor reported in April 2023 that a new one-stop border post at Katuna was operating. Traveller accounts describe officers from both countries working side by side in one building, so you complete the Uganda and Rwanda formalities without driving between two separate compounds. One operator guide also says tourists are prioritised. We would not count on a faster queue, but we would expect an orderly one.

Hours at the Katuna Gatuna border

Two sources describe the Katuna Gatuna border as open 24 hours, an operator guide from January 2024 and an undated encyclopaedia entry. A February 2026 guide says daylight only and advises against a night crossing. We have found no official timetable to settle it. Our advice is simple: plan to be through in daylight, and ask your operator to confirm the hours for your date.

The Cyanika crossing (Kyanika) near Musanze and Kisoro

The Cyanika crossing, called Kyanika on the Uganda side, lies between Musanze in Rwanda and Kisoro in Uganda. It is the natural link between Rwanda's Volcanoes area and Uganda's southern gorilla sectors, and it is the Uganda Rwanda border crossing for Mgahinga. Kigali to Cyanika is about 2 to 3 hours via Musanze. One operator gives about 3 hours or 119 km, another about 2 hours, so we state the range and not a single figure.

On the Uganda side, one older page (updated March 2022) puts the post about 11 km from Kisoro town, and says Musanze is about 30 minutes away by shared taxi. Treat both as indicative, because the page is dated. For Rushaga and Nkuringo, one operator describes a further 1 to 1.5 hours on rough road after the border, and another places Kisoro 30 to 45 km from those sector gates. The Kisoro airstrip is the usual flight entry for this crossing and for Mgahinga. Our Mgahinga guide covers the park itself, and our Volcanoes National Park guide covers the Rwanda side.

Hours at the Kyanika border

The Kyanika border and its Rwanda side disagree between sources. A January 2024 operator guide gives 6am to 9pm on the Uganda side and 5am to 8pm on the Rwanda side. An April 2025 operator page gives 7am to 9pm. Neither is an official notice. If your plan puts you at the post near either end of those windows, move it. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon is safe under every version we found.

Hours are reported, not confirmed. We found no official opening-hours notice for either crossing on 11 October 2026. Two operator pages give different windows. Confirm with your operator for your date, and plan the crossing in daylight.

Which Uganda Rwanda border crossing for which gorilla sector

Any Rwanda Uganda border crossing decision starts from the trailhead, not the border. Work out which sector holds your permit, then take the crossing that gives the shortest sensible road. The table sets out our planning logic, based on the route facts above. It is a guide to the usual choice, not a rule, because the roads, your overnight stops and the season all matter.

SectorCountryUsual crossingWhy
BuhomaUganda, BwindiKatuna and GatunaOn the Kigali to Kabale road, served directly
RuhijaUganda, BwindiKatuna and GatunaClosest of the Bwindi sectors to Kigali, by about 40 minutes
Rushaga and NkuringoUganda, BwindiEitherReachable via Kabale from Katuna, or via Kisoro from Cyanika; your overnight stop decides
MgahingaUgandaCyanika and KyanikaClose to Kisoro
Volcanoes linkRwanda to UgandaCyanika and KyanikaStarts from Musanze, the Volcanoes base

A full trip can use one Uganda Rwanda border crossing on the way in and the other on the way out. A Rwanda trek, a crossing at Cyanika into the southern sectors, and a drive north to Entebbe or on to the next flight is one example. For the question of whether to trek in both countries and in which order, see our guide to combine Uganda and Rwanda gorilla trekking. For where the gorillas sit in a longer route, see gorillas first or last on safari.

Planning tip: match the crossing to the gate you will sleep nearest, not to the shortest line on the map. A crossing that saves 30 minutes but leaves you on a rough road after dark is a poor trade.

How the Uganda Rwanda border crossing works, step by step

Border posts vary by day, but travellers' reports describe the same sequence at both Uganda Rwanda border crossing points. Treat it as the general pattern, not a fixed procedure.

  1. Arrive in daylight with papers in hand. Keep passports, visa approvals and vaccination certificates in hand luggage, not in the boot.
  2. Complete departure formalities with the officers of the country you are leaving.
  3. Cross the line. Your driver handles any vehicle paperwork, or you change vehicle, depending on your operator's arrangement (see the vehicle section below).
  4. Complete arrival formalities with the officers of the country you are entering: passport, visa or EATV approval and, for Uganda's East Africa Tourist Visa, the biometric step.
  5. Rejoin your vehicle on the far side and continue to the next lodge.

Crossing from Rwanda to Uganda

For a crossing from Rwanda to Uganda you leave Rwanda at Gatuna or Cyanika and enter Uganda at Katuna or Kyanika. If the same vehicle crosses, the driver moves from the right-hand side of the road to the left on the Uganda side. Rwanda drives on the right and Uganda on the left. Rental cars are mostly right-hand drive, so the driver must adjust at that switch. This is the common direction for travellers who finish a Volcanoes trek and then trek in Bwindi.

Crossing from Uganda to Rwanda

For a crossing from Uganda to Rwanda the order reverses. The point to protect is the Rwanda trek morning. The briefing at Kinigi starts at about 7:00, and the Rwanda Development Board gives no refund for late arrival or for your own cancellation. Do not cross on the morning of a Rwanda trek. Cross the day before and sleep on the Rwanda side. On the Uganda side, the tariff sets a 25% fine for late rescheduling, so a delay at the post can also cost money there.

On foot or by public transport

Travellers' blogs describe people crossing by bus, shared taxi or on foot. We plan private transfers for our guests, and we have not verified current public schedules or fares, so we do not quote them. If you cross independently, use the same daylight rule and keep to the official posts.

Documents to carry at the Uganda Rwanda border crossing

The documents to carry at a Uganda Rwanda border crossing are short, but they must be correct. For each person, bring the items below. Keep a printed copy and a phone copy of anything that was issued electronically.

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive, with at least two blank pages to be safe. Uganda's East Africa Tourist Visa page and the UK FCDO ask for six months. Page requirements differ by official source, so we advise two.
  • Visa or approval: a Uganda or Rwanda visa, or an East Africa Tourist Visa approval, depending on your nationality.
  • Vaccination certificate if you hold one (see the health note below).
  • Your operator's contact details and your accommodation bookings, so you can answer questions at the post.

Visa rules depend on your nationality, so confirm yours on the official portals, or read our wider guide to visa requirements. Your gorilla permit confirmations are not border documents, but keep them with the rest of your papers.

Visa approvals and the EATV

The East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only, costs USD 100, and is valid for 90 days. Operator pages say it covers a Uganda Rwanda crossing without extra visas, so it can replace two separate visas, but confirm it on the official portals before you rely on it. You apply online through the country you will enter first, and you must enter the three-country area through that country. Uganda's process asks for biometrics at an immigration office or border post after approval. Rwanda's pages say the visa is available on arrival, while Uganda says to apply online first, so we advise applying online before you travel. Our East Africa tourist visa guide owns the full decision, including what happens if your route leaves the three countries.

Health certificates and screening

Status checked 11 October 2026, and liable to change. A notice posted on 2 October 2026 says Uganda no longer requires a yellow fever certificate for entry, and the UK FCDO removed its Uganda yellow fever line on 8 October 2026. Uganda's own EATV page still listed a certificate when we checked, which may be out of date. Rwanda's May 2026 note lists Kenya and Uganda among the countries it asks a certificate from, and its migration pages say a certificate may be required at the border and that extra rules may be set in an outbreak. If you hold a certificate, carry it (our yellow fever certificate guide covers each arrival), and ask your doctor about the rest. See our vaccinations guide.

On Ebola, WHO's update of 8 October 2026 describes the Bundibugyo outbreak as centred on the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 8,728 confirmed cases to 6 October. Uganda declared its own outbreak over on 27 August 2026. A Rwanda Development Board public notice of 25 May 2026 said foreign nationals who had been in the DRC within 30 days were refused entry and that screening at land crossings had been reinforced. It may have changed. WHO advises against travel restrictions, but advisory levels differ by government and some pages lag. Check the live pages: WHO, CDC, UK FCDO for Rwanda and UK FCDO for Uganda.

Uganda Rwanda border crossing times: hours, journeys and delays

Uganda Rwanda border crossing times have three parts: the drive to the post, the post itself, and the road after it. The post is the smallest part. One operator guide from February 2026 advises 30 to 60 minutes for people, and a 2025 trip report describes clearing both sides at Katuna in about 30 minutes on a morning arrival. That single report is anecdotal. The drives before and after are what fill the day.

Entebbe to Kisoro or Kihihi by light aircraftAbout 1 hour 15About 15 kg soft bag; confirm

All figures are about, and change with traffic, weather and season.

The comparison explains why Kigali is a practical gateway to Bwindi: roughly 4 to 6 hours on the Rwanda route, against 8 to 10 from Entebbe or Kampala by road. RwandAir flies Entebbe to Kigali in about 1 hour 5. Uganda Airlines announced a daily Entebbe to Kigali flight from 18 November 2026, which was not operating on 11 October 2026, so confirm any flight before you rely on it. Our flight logistics guide and fly-in or road safari guide weigh air against road.

Rain, roads and a buffer

Rwanda's long rains run March to May, with April the wettest, and its short rains October to November. Uganda's Bwindi area is wet in March to April and October to November. We have no sourced figure for how rain changes border crossing times, so we advise adding slack, not minutes: schedule no trek, flight or fixed-time activity on a crossing day. Kenya's weather service warned on 10 September 2026 of heavy October to December rain that could continue into February 2027, so allow extra time on any departure between now and early 2027. For the calendar, see our best time to see gorillas in Uganda and our best time for a four country safari.

Cross-border vehicle rules for the Uganda Rwanda border crossing

If your vehicle crosses, the paperwork is the part most visitors never see at a Uganda Rwanda border crossing. Operator and rental pages agree on the core documents for a cross-border vehicle. A Daily Monitor checklist from September 2025 and a rental company page from October 2026 give the same list, and an October 2026 operator page says safari vehicles cross at Katuna and Cyanika with COMESA cover and operator letters.

ItemWhat operators and rental pages report
COMESA Yellow CardNeeded for the vehicle to cross
Owner or rental letterA letter from the owner or rental company; one checklist says notarised
Logbook and licenceBoth needed
InsuranceA Ugandan policy usually does not cover Rwanda; one checklist says temporary cover is sold at the Rwanda border (we do not quote the price)
Driving sideUganda drives on the left, Rwanda on the right; rental cars are mostly right-hand drive
Company permissionNot every company allows cross-border use

The open question is the driver-guide handover. No source we read describes a rule: operators differ, and some change vehicle at the border while others cross in one vehicle. We will not invent a rule here. Ask your operator whether your vehicle crosses or you change vehicle at the border, and ask for the answer in writing before you pay. If you are renting a car and driving yourself, ask the rental company in writing whether it allows a cross-border vehicle at all, and for the documents it will supply.

Is the Uganda Rwanda border crossing open? Status and 2019 to 2022 history

Status as of 11 October 2026: we found no closure of Katuna or Cyanika in 2025 or 2026 in our searches. That is the absence of news, not proof, so confirm with your operator close to your date. Uganda also closed its crossings with the Democratic Republic of Congo from 27 May 2026 for at least four weeks, and we could not confirm whether that has lifted. That is a different border from the ones in this guide.

The history explains why older pages say the border is shut. Sources we read describe the closure at Gatuna and Katuna, and we do not state how Cyanika operated during it.

WhenWhat happened
Early 2019Rwanda closed Gatuna (sources give February or March)
31 January 2022Partial reopening for cargo trucks, Rwandan citizens and returning residents only
7 March 2022Full reopening reported
23 June 2022The East African Court of Justice ruled that the closure breached the EAC Treaty
April 2023One-stop border post at Katuna reported operating
4 October 2024Uganda tightened Katuna screening because of Marburg in Rwanda

The October 2024 entry matters for planning. A Uganda Rwanda border crossing can stay open and still add screening at short notice. That is why we ask guests to carry their papers and allow slack. For the live picture, our entry alerts section on the hub guide is where we record dated notices, and our safety guide covers the wider question.

Who this suits and common Uganda Rwanda border crossing mistakes

This Uganda Rwanda border crossing guide suits anyone driving between Kigali and Bwindi, Mgahinga or Volcanoes, and anyone stitching a Rwanda and Uganda gorilla trip into a longer route. It is less useful if you will fly between the two countries, because then there is no land border to plan. Our Uganda vs Rwanda comparison helps you decide which country to visit if you only have time for one.

What most guides get wrong is in the list. Older pages say the border is closed, quote opening hours with no source, and give a 4 to 5 hour total beside 2 and 3 hour legs that add up to more.

  • Treating hours as settled. Published hours conflict for both crossings. Cross in daylight and confirm.
  • Using one name only. Katuna and Gatuna are the same post, and so are Cyanika and Kyanika. Search for both names.
  • Believing the 2019 to 2022 closure is current. It is history, and we found no 2025 or 2026 closure, though absence of news is not proof.
  • Crossing on a trek morning. Rwanda gives no refund for late arrival. Cross the day before.
  • Assuming the vehicle crosses. Some operators change vehicle at the border. Ask, and get it in writing.
  • Relying on an EATV you have not checked. Confirm coverage and the first-entry rule on the official portals.

Next steps: plan your Uganda Rwanda border crossing

The simplest way to remove risk from a Uganda Rwanda border crossing is to plan it as its own day, with a named crossing, a confirmed vehicle arrangement and the right papers. Tell our planners which sector holds your permits and which country you will start in, and they will propose the crossing, the timing and the onward road for your dates.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the Uganda Rwanda border open to tourists?
Yes, as far as we can tell. We found no closure of Katuna or Cyanika in 2025 or 2026 in searches made on 11 October 2026, but that is absence of news, not proof. The closure of Gatuna ran from 2019 to 2022 and explains why older pages say it is shut. Confirm with your operator close to your travel date, and carry your papers in hand luggage.
Are Katuna and Gatuna the same border?
Yes. Katuna is Uganda's name for its side and Gatuna is Rwanda's name for its side of one crossing on the Kigali to Kabale road. Cyanika and Kyanika work the same way: Rwanda says Cyanika and Uganda says Kyanika. Because many pages use only one name, search for both when you look for hours or news.
Which border should I use to reach Bwindi from Kigali?
For the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors, plan Katuna and Gatuna, about 2 hours from Kigali. For Mgahinga, use Cyanika and Kyanika. Rushaga and Nkuringo can be reached from either, so your overnight stop and the road decide. We found no source that ranks one above the other for those two sectors, so our planners choose case by case.
How long does it take to drive from Kigali to Bwindi?
Allow about 4 to 6 hours by road, depending on the sector and your stops. Kigali to Katuna is about 2 hours, and Kigali to Cyanika is about 2 to 3 hours via Musanze. Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi by road is about 8 to 10 hours, which is why the Rwanda route is often shorter for Bwindi.
How long does the border crossing itself take?
Plan 30 to 60 minutes at the post, according to a February 2026 operator guide. One 2025 trip report describes clearing both sides at Katuna in about 30 minutes on a morning arrival, but that is one account. Queues, vehicle paperwork and the day all change it, so schedule nothing fixed on a crossing day.
What documents do I need at the border?
Bring your passport, valid for at least 6 months from arrival with two blank pages to be safe, plus your visa or East Africa Tourist Visa approval, and a vaccination certificate if you hold one. Keep a printed and a phone copy of electronic approvals. If a vehicle crosses, it needs its own papers, which we list separately.
Do I need a visa for Uganda and Rwanda, and can I use the EATV?
It depends on your nationality, so check the official portals. The East Africa Tourist Visa costs USD 100, lasts 90 days and covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only. Operator pages say it covers the Uganda Rwanda crossing without extra visas, but confirm that before you rely on it. Apply through the country you will enter first.
What are the border opening hours?
Published hours conflict, and we found no official notice. Katuna and Gatuna is reported open 24 hours by two sources and daylight only by one. Cyanika is reported as 6am to 9pm on the Uganda side and 5am to 8pm on the Rwanda side by one guide, and 7am to 9pm by another. Plan to cross in daylight and confirm.
Can I cross with a private driver and vehicle, or do I change cars?
Both happen, and no source we read states a rule. A vehicle that crosses needs a COMESA Yellow Card, an owner or rental letter, the logbook and a licence, and not every company allows it. Some operators change vehicle at the border. Ask your operator which applies to your trip, and ask for it in writing.
Can I fly instead of driving between Kigali and Uganda?
Yes, in part. RwandAir flies Entebbe to Kigali in about 1 hour 5, and Uganda Airlines announced a daily flight from 18 November 2026, which was not yet operating on 11 October. There is no direct flight we could find from Kigali to Kisoro. Aerolink flies Entebbe to Kisoro and Kihihi in about 1 hour 15.
Is the border safe and reliable right now?
We can report only what we found on 11 October 2026: no closure of either crossing, an Ebola outbreak centred on the Democratic Republic of Congo, and screening that can change at short notice, as at Katuna in October 2024. We do not quote advisory levels because they differ and some lag. Check WHO, CDC and UK FCDO before you travel.
What should I not bring across the border?
Avoid plastic carrier bags for Rwanda. Several border guides mention restrictions on them, though we found no official statement in our research, so confirm before you travel and use cloth or reusable bags instead. Do not pack gifts or goods you cannot explain, and keep every document in your hand luggage, not in the vehicle boot.
